There is nothing that quite matches real wood siding — the grain, the depth of a stained clapboard, the way a board-and-batten wall reads on the right home. Bay Area Siding Company installs natural wood siding across central Contra Costa for the Pleasant Hill owners who want that authentic look and are clear-eyed about the maintenance it asks for. We are a Larkspur-based (Marin) siding and window contractor, and we would rather have the honest conversation up front than sell you a wall you will resent in five years.

Talk it through. Call (415) 619-5167 or request a bid.

Where wood earns its place

Natural wood — cedar or redwood clapboard, shingle and shake, board-and-batten — is the premium natural cladding. It is renewable, it can be repaired board by board rather than in whole sections, and no manufactured product fully reproduces its character. On a home with real architectural intent, a period house, or a wooded lot where the owner wants the exterior to feel of a piece with the setting, wood is the material that delivers. If that authentic look is genuinely what you are after, it is worth doing and worth doing well.

The upkeep, told straight

Wood is the highest-maintenance siding we install, and there is no getting around it. It needs a maintained finish — paint or stain on a real cycle — to hold off the two things that end wood walls: moisture, which brings rot, and insects. Pleasant Hill's climate makes both a live concern: warm, dry summers with long UV hours break down a finish, and damp, foggy winters give any unprotected wood a chance to take on water. Kept up, cedar and redwood last a long time; let the finish lapse on a sun-beaten south wall and the clock speeds up fast. Choose wood for the look, but budget the maintenance as part of the decision.

The fire question — mostly, but not entirely, moot here

Wood is combustible, and in a genuine wildfire-exposed area that is a serious mark against it. In Pleasant Hill it is usually not the deciding factor: the city sits on mostly flat, developed land and is generally not within a state Fire Hazard Severity Zone. So for the typical Pleasant Hill lot, choosing wood is a look-and-maintenance decision, not a code one. The exception is the handful of parcels along the city's open-space edges that back to hillside or wildland — if that is your lot, tell us and we will confirm the designation before speccing. On a genuinely fire-exposed parcel, noncombustible fiber cement is the responsible material, and we will steer you there rather than sell you wood you should not put on that wall.

If you love the look but not the labor

Plenty of homeowners want the warmth of wood without the full maintenance load. Two honest alternatives:

  • LP SmartSide — engineered wood with a genuine wood texture, lighter and more forgiving than solid lumber and less vulnerable to rot and pests, though it still gets repainted.
  • Fiber cement and James Hardie — profiles that mimic wood grain closely, noncombustible, and holding factory color far longer than a field finish on real wood.

Neither is real wood, and if authenticity is the whole point they will not satisfy you. But if it is the look you are chasing rather than the material itself, they save years of ladder time. For the wider decision, start at the siding replacement overview.

How the install runs

A wood re-side starts with a full tear-off. We remove the old cladding down to the sheathing and substrate so the water-resistive barrier (WRB) and the flashing at windows, doors, and penetrations can be inspected and corrected — the concealed system that actually keeps the wall dry, which matters even more under wood, since the barrier is your backstop when the finish eventually needs attention. We do not go down to the framing on a normal re-side unless the sheathing has failed. New wood is then installed with proper gapping, fastening, and back-priming so it can move with the seasons without splitting. Exterior work is permitted through the City of Pleasant Hill Building Division, and we handle the permit.

What drives the cost

We price after a walkthrough. The variables: the species and profile (clapboard, shingle, board-and-batten), square footage and stories, how much substrate or flashing repair appears at tear-off, whether you finish on site or use pre-finished stock, and whether you coordinate window replacement so the flashing sequences between the two. Wood carries a higher lifetime cost than most alternatives once you count the repainting.

FAQ

How much maintenance does wood siding really need in Pleasant Hill? Plan on refinishing (paint or stain) on a regular cycle, sooner on sun-facing walls that our summers work hardest. Wood also needs prompt attention to any spot where the finish opens up, because moisture and pests follow. Kept up, it lasts; neglected, it fails faster than any other material we install.

Is wood siding a fire risk where I live? For most of Pleasant Hill, it is not a code issue — the city is generally outside the state Fire Hazard Severity Zones. If your parcel backs to open space or wildland, we confirm the fire designation first, and on a genuinely exposed lot we recommend noncombustible fiber cement instead.

Can I get the wood look with less upkeep? Yes — LP SmartSide engineered wood or wood-grain fiber cement both approximate the look with far less maintenance. They are not real wood, so if authenticity is the goal they are a compromise, but they save significant labor over the years.

Do I need a permit for a wood re-side in Pleasant Hill? Yes. Siding replacement is a permitted exterior alteration through the City of Pleasant Hill Building Division, and we take care of it.
