LP SmartSide is engineered wood, and that description is the whole pitch. It's made from wood strands bound with resins and waxes and treated through the manufacturer's SmartGuard process, then pressed into boards, panels, and trim that carry the warm grain and texture of real wood while behaving far more predictably than a solid cedar clapboard. For an Oakland homeowner who wants the look of wood without signing up for the full wood-maintenance burden, SmartSide is the material that splits that difference. Bay Area Siding Company installs it across the East Bay.

Compared with the two materials homeowners usually cross-shop it against — solid wood and fiber cement — SmartSide occupies a genuine middle ground:
The honest trade-off is that it is still a wood-based product. SmartSide needs to be kept painted and sealed — the factory prefinish and field coatings both matter — and while the SmartGuard treatment is engineered to resist fungal decay and termites, the maintenance discipline of repainting on schedule is what keeps it performing. It's low-fuss compared with solid cedar, not no-fuss.
On Oakland's flatland homes, SmartSide is a strong choice: it gives a bungalow or a Craftsman the wood texture the architecture wants, at a cost that typically lands between vinyl and fiber cement, with far less upkeep than the original wood siding it replaces. The place to pause is the hills. Much of the Oakland hills is a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone / Wildland-Urban Interface fire area, and the City kept that larger boundary in place under a 2025 ordinance; California Building Code Chapter 7A governs exterior wall coverings there and generally favors noncombustible or ignition-resistant assemblies. As a wood-based product, engineered wood is not in the same category as noncombustible fiber cement for those parcels. Whether and how Chapter 7A applies depends on your parcel, the product, and the scope of work, so we confirm it with the City — and on a hill fire parcel that conversation often points toward fiber cement or James Hardie instead.
Cross-shopping the field? Weigh SmartSide against natural wood for the maintenance and cost difference, against vinyl at the budget end, or read the general Oakland siding replacement page.
A SmartSide re-side runs like any quality job: measure and spec, pull the City of Oakland building permit (Design Review can apply where the work isn't like-for-like), tear off the old cladding to the sheathing so the water-resistive barrier and flashing can be inspected, correct anything found, then install and detail the boards — including painting or touching up cut ends and field-finishing where specified. Cost tracks the wall area and stories, whether you choose prefinished or field-painted product, the trim and profile selection, and what tear-off reveals in the substrate.
Is LP SmartSide better than fiber cement? Neither is simply "better" — they're different. SmartSide is lighter, more impact-resistant, and easier to work, with a warmer wood texture; fiber cement is noncombustible and needs less repainting. On a hill fire-zone parcel, fiber cement's noncombustibility usually decides it. On a flatland home wanting a wood look, SmartSide is very competitive.
Does SmartSide need to be painted? Yes. It's an engineered wood product and relies on its finish; the prefinish and periodic repainting are part of keeping it sound. It's much lower-maintenance than solid cedar, but it isn't maintenance-free like vinyl.
Can I use SmartSide on my Oakland hills home? It's a wood-based, combustible product, so on a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone / WUI parcel it may not be the right fit under Chapter 7A. We confirm your parcel's designation and scope with the City before recommending a material, and often point hill homes toward noncombustible fiber cement.
Do I need a permit for SmartSide siding in Oakland? Yes. The City of Oakland requires a building permit for siding work, and Design Review may apply unless it's a like-for-like replacement.
