In Galt, the case for new windows is usually made in July. When afternoons run past a hundred degrees for days on end, single-pane glass and tired dual-pane units turn sun-facing rooms into heat traps and push the air conditioner to run all day. Modern replacement windows — dual-pane, Low-E, chosen for a low solar-heat-gain number — are one of the most direct ways to make a valley home more comfortable and take some of the load off summer cooling.

Bay Area Siding Company is a Larkspur-based window and siding contractor serving Northern California and the Central Valley. On a window job we handle it end to end: measuring, glass and frame selection, permitting, removal, flashing and air-sealing, and a final walkthrough.

Start here. Request an estimate or call (415) 619-5167.

What to prioritize in a Galt window

Three choices decide how well a window performs in this climate:

  • The glass package — this is the big one here. Look for dual-pane insulated glass with a Low-E coating and a low solar-heat-gain coefficient (SHGC). In a cooling-dominated climate like Galt's, keeping the sun's heat out matters more than trapping heat in, so a lower SHGC does real work on west- and south-facing walls. California's Title 24 energy code sets the maximums your units have to meet, and those numbers move with the code cycle — we confirm the current requirement at permit time rather than quoting a fixed figure.
  • Frame material. Vinyl, fiberglass, aluminum-clad wood, and aluminum each balance cost, thermal performance, and looks differently. Vinyl and fiberglass are common, comfortable choices for valley tract homes; an older home near downtown may look right with a clad-wood profile that respects the original openings.
  • Retrofit vs. new-construction install. A retrofit (insert) install keeps the existing frame and is quicker and less invasive. A new-construction install removes the window to the rough opening so flashing can be fully renewed — the right call where there's rot or past water intrusion at the sill. We do both and recommend based on what the openings actually need.

Comparing brands? Start at our window hub, then read up on Anlin, Milgard, Andersen, Marvin, and Pella. We install aluminum windows as well.

Galt homes and the windows they came with

Galt's older core near the rail line still holds homes with original single-pane wood windows — great character, poor performance, and usually the biggest comfort upgrade available on the house. The postwar and later tract neighborhoods are a different situation: many of those homes are now old enough that their first-generation dual-pane units are failing, and in the valley's heat a broken seal shows up as permanent fog or haze between the panes that can't be repaired, only replaced. Whichever era your home is from, the fix is the same category of upgrade — you're just starting from a different baseline.

Permits and Title 24

Window replacement in the city is handled through the City of Galt Building Division, which administers the California Building Codes, including the Title 24 energy standards. Galt falls in one of California's hot inland energy climate zones, and replacement windows are treated as an alteration under the Energy Code, so an energy-compliance step is typically part of the submittal. Whether your specific job needs a permit and exactly what the paperwork looks like depends on scope — we confirm that with the Building Division and handle the filing. Homes on rural parcels outside city limits may permit through Sacramento County instead, which we sort out at the start.

How the job goes

A typical window replacement is a tight, few-step process: we measure each opening precisely, help you settle the glass package and frames to meet Title 24, pull the permit where one's required, remove the old units and check the openings for rot or damage, set the new windows level and plumb, flash and air-seal against water and drafts, then finish the trim and walk it with you. Most homes are back to normal quickly; rot repair found at removal is the main thing that can add a step.

What affects the cost

We don't quote online because every home is different. The drivers are the number and size of openings, frame material and brand, the glass package, retrofit vs. new-construction, the condition of the existing framing (rot repair adds scope), and access — second-story openings take more setup. Doing several windows at once, or pairing the work with a re-side, is usually the more efficient way to plan it.

FAQ

What kind of glass should I get for Galt's heat? Dual-pane, Low-E glass with a low solar-heat-gain coefficient. In a cooling-dominated valley climate, keeping the sun's heat out is the priority, especially on west- and south-facing windows. We match the package to Title 24 and to each wall's exposure.

Do I need a permit to replace windows in Galt? Window replacement goes through the City of Galt Building Division under the California Building Codes, and a Title 24 energy-compliance step is generally part of it. Whether your specific job needs a permit depends on scope; we confirm it and handle the filing.

My dual-pane windows are foggy inside — can they be fixed? No. Fog or haze between the panes means the seal has failed, and a sealed insulated unit can't be repaired, only replaced. It's common on older tract-home windows in the valley heat.

Retrofit or new-construction — which install do I need? Retrofit is faster and keeps the existing frame; new-construction removes the window to the opening so flashing can be fully renewed, which is the better route where there's rot or water damage. We assess the openings and recommend.
