Fiber cement is a practical choice for a Sonoma exterior. It does not burn, does not rot, and does not feed termites. It holds paint far longer than wood in the valley's dry summer heat. It can also be shaped into lap, shingle, and board-and-batten profiles convincing enough for a period house near the Plaza.

It is also heavy and exacting to install, and it is not the least expensive option. Bay Area Siding Company is a Larkspur-based (Marin) siding and window contractor working across the North Bay wine country. We install fiber cement from several manufacturers and can help you decide whether it is the right material for your house, and which version of it.

Start the conversation. Request a bid or call (415) 619-5167.

What fiber cement actually is

Fiber cement is a composite of Portland cement, sand, and cellulose fibers. It is formed into planks, shingles, panels, and trim, then cured. The cement and sand make it hard, stable, and noncombustible. The cellulose fibers keep it from being brittle.

The result is a cladding that behaves like masonry in some respects:

  • It shrugs off moisture and insects.
  • It does not soften in heat the way vinyl can.
  • It accepts paint well.

It is not a structural material and not a weather barrier on its own. The water-resistive barrier (WRB) and flashing behind it still do the job of keeping the wall dry. That is why the installation matters as much as the product.

This page covers fiber cement as a category. If you have already settled on James Hardie specifically, our Sonoma James Hardie page goes deeper on that brand's lines and warranty.

Choosing among fiber cement options

"Fiber cement" covers a range of products. Several choices shape both how the house looks and what the project costs.

Manufacturer. James Hardie is the most widely known name. Allura and Nichiha are other established manufacturers with their own product lines. Each has its own profiles, textures, finish options, and installation requirements. We compare them side by side based on the look you want and the scope of the job.

Profile and format:

  • Lap siding is the familiar horizontal board, in smooth or wood-grain textures and various exposures. It is the natural match for Sonoma's Victorians, farmhouses, and bungalows.
  • Shingle and shake profiles suit Craftsman and cottage-style homes and gables.
  • Vertical panel and board-and-batten fit farmhouse and modern-agrarian designs, which are well suited to wine country.
  • Fiber cement trim keeps corners, window surrounds, and fascia in the same rot-resistant material as the field siding.

Finish. Many lines come either factory-primed for field painting or factory-finished in a baked-on color. Field paint gives you unlimited color choice. A factory finish typically gives a more consistent, longer-lasting coat and less paint work on site. Summer sun is strong here, so the durability of the finish deserves a real conversation.

Why it earns its place on a Sonoma home

Fire exposure

Sonoma's fire history is recent and real. The 2017 Nuns Fire burned through the surrounding valley and hills and destroyed homes outside downtown. In early 2025, Cal Fire's statewide update, reflected in the City of Sonoma's revised Fire Hazard Severity Zone map, expanded the High and Very High fire-hazard areas in and around the city. The heavier designations are concentrated toward the hills and wildland edges.

Fiber cement is generally rated noncombustible. That is a large part of why it comes up so often on those parcels. If your property carries a High or Very High designation, California Building Code Chapter 7A can govern exterior wall coverings on the regulated assemblies involved in your project.

Chapter 7A does not automatically apply to "the whole house," however. It depends on your parcel and scope. Vents, eaves, and openings have their own rules. We confirm the specifics with the City of Sonoma before specifying anything.

Character near the Plaza

Many of Sonoma's older homes sit in the blocks around the Sonoma Plaza National Historic Landmark district. Fiber cement lap and shingle profiles can closely follow the reveal and proportions of original wood siding. Few materials combine that with low maintenance.

If your home is in a historic overlay or has preservation status, tell us at the start. The City may weigh in on profile, exposure, or finish, and it is far easier to plan for that than to revise later.

Summer heat and the repaint cycle

Long, hot, dry summers are hard on painted wood. Boards move, paint checks and peels, and the repaint schedule keeps coming around. Fiber cement is far more dimensionally stable and holds paint considerably longer.

For owners tired of scraping and painting every few years, that is often the deciding factor, independent of fire exposure.

The honest trade-offs

Fiber cement is not the right answer for every house or budget:

  • Weight and handling. It is much heavier than vinyl or engineered wood. Boards need careful handling to avoid breakage, and installation takes more labor.
  • Cost. It generally costs more installed than vinyl. It usually competes on long-term value rather than upfront price.
  • Cutting creates silica dust. Cutting fiber cement releases crystalline silica. Crews need proper tools and dust control. This is one reason it is not a casual DIY material.
  • Paint still matters eventually. Paint lasts longer on fiber cement than on wood, but field-painted boards will still need repainting over the life of the siding. Caulked joints need periodic attention too.
  • Install details are unforgiving. Clearances at grade, roofs, and decks, joint treatment, and fastening are specified by each manufacturer. Skipping them can affect both performance and warranty coverage.

If budget is the driver, look at vinyl or CertainTeed's lineup. If you want a real wood texture at lighter weight and are not on a heavily fire-regulated parcel, LP SmartSide is worth comparing. If you are committed to natural wood siding, we can discuss what that means for upkeep and, where relevant, fire rules.

How a fiber cement re-side goes

Most Sonoma fiber cement jobs replace existing siding: aging wood, T1-11, hardboard, or older aluminum. The process runs in this order:

  1. Remove the old cladding down to the sheathing and substrate. This lets us inspect the sheathing, WRB, and flashing.
  2. Repair anything that has failed. Soft sheathing near windows and along the base of walls is common on older homes. Many predate modern building paper or house wrap.
  3. Install the new barrier and flashing. We renew the WRB and flash windows, doors, and penetrations correctly.
  4. Install the fiber cement to the manufacturer's specifications, then finish or paint.

Framing only comes into play if the sheathing itself has failed and has to be opened up. We would show you that and discuss it before doing it.

Permits run through the City of Sonoma Building Division. The division adopts the current California Building Standards Code and moved to the 2025 edition effective January 1, 2026. We handle the permit and confirm any fire-zone or historic requirements for your address.

If windows are due at the same time, doing them together lets the flashing be integrated properly. See our Sonoma window replacement page. For the broader decision of whether to re-side at all, see Sonoma siding replacement.

What drives the price

We don't publish prices because each house is different. These factors move the number:

  • Wall area and the number of stories
  • Profile choice (lap, shingle, and panel install differently)
  • Factory finish versus field paint
  • Amount of fiber cement trim
  • Sheathing or flashing repairs found after tear-off
  • Chapter 7A requirements on your parcel, including related vents or eaves in scope
  • Historic-review considerations
  • Site access on hillside lots

A site walkthrough is how we price it accurately.

FAQ

Is fiber cement required if my Sonoma home is in a High or Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone? Not automatically. Chapter 7A requires compliant exterior wall coverings on regulated assemblies, and noncombustible fiber cement is one common way to meet that. Whether and how it applies depends on your parcel's designation and the project scope. We confirm the specifics with the City of Sonoma.

Can fiber cement match the siding on an older home near the Plaza? Often very closely. Smooth or wood-grain lap in the right exposure, plus fiber cement trim, can follow original proportions well. If your home has historic status, we factor the City's input into the profile and finish choices.

Is James Hardie the same thing as fiber cement? James Hardie is one brand of fiber cement. Allura and Nichiha are others. We install fiber cement from multiple manufacturers and compare them for your project.

How long does a fiber cement re-side take? It depends on wall area, repairs found after tear-off, finish choice, and permit timing. We give you a realistic schedule after the walkthrough, not before.
