Fiber cement has become the default answer for a lot of Campbell homeowners who want an exterior that looks sharp for decades and asks almost nothing of them in between. It's a manufactured cladding — Portland cement, sand, and cellulose fiber pressed into boards, panels, and shingles — and it behaves nothing like the hardboard or plywood siding it usually replaces. Bay Area Siding Company installs fiber cement across the South Bay, and this page is the brand-neutral overview: what the material is, where it earns its keep on a valley-floor home, and how the major fiber-cement lines stack up.

Two things about fiber cement matter most here. First, it's dimensionally stable — it doesn't cup, swell, or telegraph moisture the way older wood-based panels do after a few of Campbell's wet winters. Second, it holds a coating exceptionally well, which pays off through the long, bright, UV-heavy valley summers that fade and chalk lesser finishes. It's also noncombustible, rot-resistant, and unappetizing to termites and carpenter ants — all of which quietly extend the life of the wall.
That noncombustibility is worth a note of context. Campbell sits on the flat Santa Clara Valley floor and isn't inside a mapped fire hazard severity zone the way the foothill parcels to the west are, so you are not required to choose a noncombustible cladding here. Plenty of homeowners still appreciate that fiber cement is noncombustible anyway — but the honest driver for choosing it in Campbell is durability and low upkeep, not a wildfire mandate.
The material is genuinely versatile across the two housing eras you see most in Campbell. On the postwar ranch tracts that filled the old orchard land through the 1950s, '60s, and '70s, a clean horizontal lap in a smooth or lightly textured finish reads modern and tidy. On the older bungalows and cottages near the historic downtown around Campbell Avenue, fiber cement comes in narrower-exposure laps, shingle courses, and board-and-batten profiles that can respect the home's original proportions rather than fighting them.
"Fiber cement" is a category, not a product, and the lines we install differ in profile range, finish system, and texture:
We'll walk the actual boards and finishes with you on site rather than steering you to one name by default. If you're still weighing fiber cement against other systems entirely, the siding replacement overview lays out the full menu.
Fiber cement isn't the cheapest cladding and it isn't the lightest. It's heavier than vinyl or engineered wood, which makes installation more labor-intensive and makes a skilled crew and correct fastening non-negotiable — cut corners on install and you lose the durability you paid for. It also has to be cut with dust control. Compared to vinyl, it costs more up front; compared to natural wood, it gives up a little of the true-grain look in exchange for shedding almost all of the maintenance. For most Campbell homeowners the math still lands in fiber cement's favor over a 20-to-30-year horizon, but it's a real decision and we'll lay out both sides.
The value on a re-side is in the parts you don't see. We pull the building permit through the City of Campbell Building Division, tear off the old cladding, and inspect the sheathing and substrate underneath — checking for concealed rot at sills and corners and confirming there's a sound water-resistive barrier (WRB) and proper flashing at windows, doors, and penetrations. On homes of Campbell's age that barrier is often minimal or was never detailed to current practice, so renewing it is frequently part of the job. Only then do the new boards go up, fastened and gapped to the manufacturer's spec, with trim and finish to close it out.
We don't post numbers because no two Campbell houses price alike. The real drivers are wall area and number of stories, how much substrate repair surfaces once the old siding is off, the specific line and finish you pick (a factory-finished product costs more than field-paint but saves labor and looks more uniform), the amount of trim and detail the home carries, and whether you're addressing windows at the same time.
Is fiber cement worth it over vinyl on a Campbell ranch home? Often, yes — if you plan to stay a while. Vinyl wins on up-front cost and is a legitimate choice, but fiber cement lasts longer, resists Campbell's summer UV better, and gives a more substantial look. We price both so you can see the gap for your specific house.
Do I need a noncombustible cladding like fiber cement in Campbell? No. Campbell's valley-floor location keeps it out of the designated fire hazard severity zones that apply to foothill parcels, so noncombustible cladding isn't mandated here. Fiber cement happens to be noncombustible, but the reason to choose it in Campbell is durability, not code.
Which fiber-cement brand is best? There's no single winner — it depends on the profiles and finish you want. James Hardie has the widest selection and a strong factory finish; Allura and Nichiha are worth comparing, with Nichiha especially strong on panelized, contemporary looks. We show you real samples before you commit.
Do you handle the permit? Yes. Exterior re-siding is permitted work reviewed through the City of Campbell Building Division, and we pull the permit and manage inspections as part of the project.
We'll bring samples, look at your walls, and give you a real number after measuring. Request an estimate or call (415) 619-5167. Browse finished exteriors in our project gallery, see the wider South Bay service area, or line up window replacement alongside the re-side.
