If you own a home in Los Gatos and you're weighing a re-side, fiber cement almost always earns a spot on the shortlist — and here the reasons split cleanly along the town's geography. On the wooded lots climbing into the Santa Cruz Mountains, it's the material's noncombustibility that puts it first. Down in the historic districts and on the valley flats, it's the way a good fiber-cement plank can reproduce a period profile without the upkeep of solid wood. This page is about the material as a category — cement, sand, and cellulose pressed into planks, panels, and shingles — and how to choose among the manufacturers that make it. If you've already decided on a particular brand, our James Hardie page goes deep on that one.

Let's look at your walls. Call (415) 619-5167 or request a bid.

Why the material and the town fit each other

Fiber cement doesn't burn, doesn't rot, and holds no interest for insects, and it takes paint — factory or field — far better and far longer than wood. Those traits map onto two Los Gatos situations.

The first is fire exposure. Los Gatos is served by the Santa Clara County Fire Department, and portions of the town plus the neighboring unincorporated mountains sit inside mapped Fire Hazard Severity Zones. On a parcel with that designation, California's Chapter 7A can steer exterior wall coverings toward noncombustible or ignition-resistant assemblies — and a cement board is noncombustible by nature, which is exactly why it comes up so often for hillside homes. Whether any of that actually reaches your project depends on your parcel and the scope of work, so it's something we confirm with the Town and County Fire rather than assume; for most homes on the flat side of town it never enters the conversation.

The second is character. Downtown and the Almond Grove, Broadway, University/Edelen, and Fairview Plaza districts are full of Victorian and Craftsman homes where board width, reveal, and shadow line are part of the architecture. Fiber cement is made in narrow lap profiles, shingle courses, and smooth or wood-grain textures that can hold those details convincingly — an advantage when your home's appearance is something the eye, or a preservation reviewer, will scrutinize.

Not all fiber cement is the same maker

"Fiber cement" names a category, not a single product. The base chemistry is similar across brands, but the profiles, finish systems, warranties, and trim ecosystems differ enough to matter:

  • James Hardie — the most widely specified line in California, with a state-specific product series and a baked-on factory finish. Its own page has the detail.
  • Allura — a complete plank, panel, and shingle offering, frequently chosen on value.
  • Nichiha — architectural panel systems and pronounced textures, at home on more contemporary hillside elevations.

For a downtown cottage, the choice usually turns on matching the existing reveal and the availability of trim and shingle pieces that read as original. For a hillside contemporary, panel systems and larger formats open up. We bring samples to the house and work it out against the actual elevation.

What the material asks in return

Fiber cement's honest trade-off is weight and craft. The boards are dense and heavy, the dust from cutting has to be captured and managed, and the details — gapping at butt joints, clearance at grade and roofline, sealing every field cut — are unforgiving of a rushed crew. Installed to the manufacturer's fastening and clearance schedule, it rewards you with a wall that outlasts several repaint cycles of wood. We install it to spec so both the product and its finish warranty hold up.

What comes off, and what's underneath

A re-side means removing the old cladding, and on the range of homes here — 1920s cottages, postwar ranches, custom hillside builds — that step exposes the sheathing or substrate and the water-resistive barrier (WRB) and flashing behind it, not the framing. That hidden layer is the whole reason full replacement beats cladding-over: on older stock the WRB is often thin, improvised, or absent, and window and base flashing was frequently never detailed correctly. We dry out and repair what we find, renew the WRB and flashing, and then hang new board on a wall that's actually sound. Framing only gets opened if the sheathing itself has failed — a larger scope we'd identify and price on its own.

What moves the number

We don't quote sight-unseen, because a Los Gatos re-side is built from the specifics: wall area and stories; which fiber-cement line and finish you pick; how much concealed substrate or flashing repair turns up once the wall is open; the amount of custom trim on a character home; whether historic review or a hillside fire designation shapes the spec; and access, which gets involved on steep, landscaped hillside lots. A walkthrough is how those variables become real numbers.

FAQ

Is fiber cement just another name for James Hardie? No. James Hardie is one manufacturer of fiber cement — the best-known one — but Allura, Nichiha, and others make the same category of material. We install multiple lines and help you choose on profile, finish, warranty, and how the boards suit your home.

Is fiber cement a good choice for a Los Gatos hillside lot? Often, yes — it's noncombustible, which is why it's a common pick where parcels carry a fire-hazard designation. Whether a specific Chapter 7A requirement applies to your job depends on your parcel and scope, which we confirm with the Town and County Fire before specifying.

Can fiber cement match my downtown home's look? Usually well. It comes in narrow lap profiles and shingle courses with smooth or wood-grain textures that can hold a period reveal. On a contributing home in a historic district, we plan the profile and trim around the Town's preservation review.

Does re-siding expose the framing? Not on a standard re-side. Pulling the cladding exposes the sheathing and the WRB and flashing — the layer we inspect and repair. Framing is only opened if the sheathing has failed, which we'd flag and quote separately.
