Fiber cement is a board made from cement, sand, and cellulose fibers. In Walnut Creek it earns its place for a practical reason: long, hot, sunny summers wear down exterior finishes faster than almost anything else, and fiber cement holds paint and keeps its shape through that stress better than most alternatives. Bay Area Siding Company is a Larkspur-based siding and window contractor. We install fiber cement from several manufacturers across Walnut Creek and the East Bay. We'll help you decide whether it's the right material for your house and, if it is, which fiber-cement option fits.

Want a straight answer on your home? Call (415) 619-5167 or request a bid.

Why fiber cement makes sense in an inland valley

In Walnut Creek, the dominant force on an exterior wall is sun and heat, not salt air or constant fog. Three properties of fiber cement matter most in that setting:

  • It stays dimensionally stable. Fiber cement doesn't soften in heat the way vinyl can. It also isn't prone to the cupping and checking that sun-baked wood develops over the years. Planks stay flat and joints stay tight.
  • It's a stable base for paint. A cementitious board doesn't swell and shrink with moisture the way wood does. Because the surface moves less, coatings last longer. Many products also come with a factory-applied, baked-on finish designed to resist fading.
  • It's noncombustible. The board itself won't burn. That doesn't automatically make a whole wall assembly code-compliant, but it's a meaningful advantage for homes near the hillside edges of town (more on that below).

Fiber cement is also resistant to rot, termites, and woodpeckers. Along with low upkeep, that's why homeowners who are tired of repainting failing wood siding every few summers often land on it.

The honest trade-offs

Fiber cement isn't the right answer for every budget or every house, and we'd rather you hear the downsides from us up front:

  • It's heavy. Long planks take two people to handle. The material has to be fastened into the wall exactly as the manufacturer specifies, and poor installation is the most common reason fiber cement jobs disappoint.
  • Installation is exacting. Required clearances at rooflines, decks, and grade, proper joint treatment, and sealed cut edges all come from the manufacturer's instructions. Skipping these details can void warranties and let water in.
  • Cutting creates silica dust. Crews need to use dust-controlled cutting methods, such as shears or saws with dust collection. You should expect your installer to manage this on site.
  • It costs more than vinyl. Material and labor usually put fiber cement above vinyl and in a similar range to engineered wood, depending on the product and finish.
  • Painted surfaces still age. A factory finish or quality field paint lasts a long time, but eventually you'll repaint. The difference is that you'll do it far less often than you would on wood.

If budget is the deciding factor, our vinyl siding page covers the lower-cost route. If you want a real wood texture with lighter handling, look at LP SmartSide engineered wood. If you want natural cedar or redwood and accept the upkeep, see wood siding.

Choosing among fiber-cement options

"Fiber cement" is a material category, not a single product. Here's how we narrow it down with Walnut Creek homeowners.

Manufacturer. We install several fiber-cement lines, and they differ in profiles, textures, finish systems, and warranty terms:

  • James Hardie is the best-known brand and has an HZ10 line formulated for California conditions. Its substrate carries a transferable 30-year non-prorated limited warranty, and its ColorPlus factory finish carries a 15-year finish warranty, both when installed to spec. If you've already settled on Hardie, go to our Walnut Creek James Hardie siding page.
  • Allura and Nichiha are also available.
  • CertainTeed WeatherBoards is covered on our CertainTeed siding page.

We'll lay out the options side by side instead of steering you to one label.

Factory finish vs. field paint. A factory-applied finish is cured under controlled conditions and arrives ready to hang, which is appealing where summer sun is hard on color. Primed boards painted on site give you unlimited color choice and are easier to touch up later. Both work well. The decision usually comes down to your color, your timeline, and your budget.

Profile. Fiber cement comes in several forms:

  • Horizontal lap planks, smooth or wood-grain
  • Shingle and shake-look panels
  • Vertical panels for a board-and-batten look
  • Matching trim boards

That range lets it suit a single-story ranch, a two-story tract home, or a more contemporary remodel. Mixing profiles, such as lap siding on the body with shingle accents at the gables, is common and adds cost mainly through extra detail work.

Fire exposure: a hillside question, not a citywide one

Most of Walnut Creek's valley floor is a heat-and-maintenance decision. The picture changes for homes on the eastern hillside edges toward the Diablo foothills. Some of those parcels fall within state-mapped Fire Hazard Severity Zones or the wildland-urban interface, where Chapter 7A of the California Building Code sets requirements for exterior wall coverings and related details.

Fiber cement is often chosen on those parcels because it's noncombustible. Whether Chapter 7A applies to your project still depends on three things:

  • Your parcel's mapped zone
  • The scope of the work
  • The specific product and wall assembly you choose

We confirm those requirements with the City of Walnut Creek before we finalize a spec. That way the plan fits the parcel and there are no surprises at inspection.

What the job looks like

Replacing siding in Walnut Creek requires a building permit from the City of Walnut Creek. The only work that avoids one is laying vinyl directly over existing siding, and fiber cement doesn't go on that way. We handle the application.

On site, the process runs like this:

  1. Removal. We take the old cladding off down to the sheathing.
  2. Inspection and repair. We inspect the sheathing, water-resistive barrier, and flashing, and fix any damaged areas we find.
  3. New barrier and flashing. We install a new WRB and flash windows, doors, and penetrations.
  4. Installation. We hang the fiber cement to the manufacturer's fastening and clearance requirements, then finish trim, caulking, and paint or touch-up.

Framing is only exposed in the uncommon case where the sheathing itself has failed and has to be replaced. If new windows are on your list, doing them during a re-side lets both be flashed together. See window replacement in Walnut Creek.

What drives the cost

We price each home individually. The main factors are:

  • The wall area and number of stories
  • The manufacturer and finish (factory color vs. field paint)
  • How many profiles and how much trim your design uses
  • How much sheathing repair turns up once the old siding is off
  • Any added detailing a fire-zone parcel requires

For the broader re-side decision, including when to replace versus repair and how fiber cement compares to every other material, see our Walnut Creek siding replacement page and the Bay Area fiber cement siding overview. Finished work is in our project gallery, and we serve homeowners throughout the East Bay.

FAQ

Is fiber cement a good choice for Walnut Creek's summer heat? Yes, for most homes. It stays flat and holds paint well under strong sun, and it doesn't soften in heat the way vinyl can. Factory-finished boards add fade resistance. Your budget and the look you want will decide whether it beats engineered wood for your house.

Does fiber cement satisfy fire-zone requirements in the Walnut Creek hills? The board is noncombustible and is frequently used on fire-zone parcels. However, Chapter 7A compliance depends on your parcel's mapped zone, the project scope, and the full wall assembly. We verify the requirements with the City of Walnut Creek before we specify materials.

Do I need a permit to install fiber cement siding in Walnut Creek? Yes. Removing existing siding and installing new siding is permitted work in Walnut Creek, and we pull the permit as part of the job.

Is James Hardie the only fiber cement option? No. Hardie is the most familiar name, but we also install Allura, Nichiha, and CertainTeed WeatherBoards. They differ in profiles, finishes, and warranty terms, and we'll compare them for your home.
