Fiber cement is often the material Windsor homeowners land on when they re-side. It doesn't soften in a Russian River valley heat wave, rot in a wet winter, or feed a fire the way wood can. It also comes in lap, panel, shingle, and board-and-batten profiles that can satisfy a subdivision's architectural guidelines. Bay Area Siding Company is a siding and window contractor based in Larkspur, and we install fiber cement throughout Sonoma County. This page covers the category as a whole: what the material is, where it shines, where it asks more of you, and how to choose among the manufacturers.

What fiber cement actually is

Fiber cement is a manufactured board made mostly of cement, sand, and cellulose fibers. It's formed into planks, panels, shingles, and trim. The cement and sand give it hardness, fire behavior, and stability. The cellulose adds enough flexibility that it doesn't crack like a pure masonry product.

The result is a cladding with several useful traits:

  • Generally noncombustible. It won't ignite and carry flame the way wood siding can. Specific fire ratings vary by product, so we check the manufacturer's documentation for the exact board you choose.
  • Rot-, pest-, and moisture-resistant. There's no wood for fungus or insects to consume.
  • Stable in heat. It doesn't sag, warp, or oil-can on a sun-baked west wall the way some vinyl can in extreme heat.
  • Good at holding paint. A quality finish, factory-applied or field-painted, typically lasts much longer than it would on wood.

Why it suits Windsor specifically

Windsor sits about nine miles north of Santa Rosa, and its summers run long, hot, and dry. The south- and west-facing elevations on a typical Windsor tract home take direct afternoon sun for months. That exposure is exactly where builder-grade hardboard, T1-11, and lower-end vinyl tend to swell, chalk, or distort first. Fiber cement's resistance to heat and UV-driven movement is a real advantage here, not a marketing line.

Fire is the other half of the conversation. Windsor lies in a county with genuine wildfire exposure, and the 2019 Kincade Fire brought evacuation orders to much of the town. That history has changed how a lot of local homeowners think about cladding.

Fiber cement doesn't make a house fireproof, and it doesn't settle every code question for you. What it does is remove a combustible exterior layer from the equation. Where California Building Code Chapter 7A applies, noncombustible exterior wall coverings are one of the recognized ways to comply. Whether 7A reaches your re-side depends on your parcel's fire-hazard designation and the scope of the work. We confirm that with the Town of Windsor Building Division rather than assume it either way.

Windsor's housing stock matters too. A large share of the town was built during its growth years in the 1980s, '90s, and 2000s, and much of that stock was finished with economical cladding that is now wearing out. Some homes already have early, thinner fiber cement. Replacing it with a current product is a legitimate upgrade path, not a lateral move.

Choosing among fiber cement manufacturers

"Fiber cement" is a category, not a brand. Here's how the main names differ in practice:

  • James Hardie. This is the most recognized name in the category and the one most Windsor homeowners have heard of. Its HZ10 line is the product formulated for California's climate. Hardie offers a transferable 30-year non-prorated substrate limited warranty and a 15-year ColorPlus finish warranty when the product is installed to spec. We go deeper on the brand on our Windsor James Hardie siding page and the James Hardie hub.
  • Allura. Allura is another fiber cement manufacturer offering lap, panel, and shingle profiles. It's worth comparing when you're weighing appearance options against budget.
  • Nichiha. Nichiha is known especially for architectural wall panels. It can be a fit if you want a more contemporary, panelized look rather than traditional lap siding.

We install fiber cement from multiple manufacturers and don't push one by default. The right choice depends on:

  • the profile and texture your HOA allows
  • whether you want a factory finish or a primed board painted on site
  • trim and accessory availability
  • warranty terms as written for the specific product

For a broader view of the category, see the fiber cement siding hub.

The honest trade-offs

Fiber cement isn't the right answer for every house or every budget, and it's better to know the downsides up front.

  • It's heavy. Boards take more handling than vinyl or engineered wood, and install time reflects that.
  • It rewards skilled installation. Manufacturers publish detailed requirements for fastening, joint treatment, and clearances to grade, roofs, and decks. Warranty coverage generally depends on following them. Shortcuts show up years later as cracked boards or moisture problems.
  • Cutting creates silica-containing dust. Our crews use dust-controlled cutting methods and handle cleanup as part of the job.
  • It usually costs more than vinyl. If budget is the controlling factor, vinyl siding may make more sense on a lower-exposure home.
  • It's rigid and dense. If you want a real-wood texture with lighter weight and more impact resistance, LP SmartSide engineered wood is worth a look. Just weigh it against the fire question on your parcel.

What goes behind the boards

Fiber cement is only as good as the wall it's attached to. On a standard re-side, we remove the existing cladding back to the sheathing and substrate. We don't strip the wall to the framing. At that point the water-resistive barrier (WRB) and the flashing at windows, doors, and penetrations are exposed and can be inspected.

On Windsor homes from the town's build-out years, those layers are frequently where the trouble lives. Laps may be short, flashing incomplete, or housewrap tired. We correct those details before new fiber cement goes on. If a section of sheathing is damaged, we show you and handle it as a separate repair rather than covering it. The broader re-side decision is covered on our Windsor siding replacement page.

Permits, HOAs, and scheduling

Siding work in Windsor is permitted and inspected through the Town of Windsor Building Division under the California Building Standards Code (Title 24). We confirm the scope with the Division and pull the permit as part of the job.

Many Windsor neighborhoods are planned subdivisions with HOA architectural guidelines covering profiles, colors, and materials. Fiber cement's range of textures and finishes makes it easier than most materials to satisfy those rules. Still, get the HOA's approval before you order anything.

What drives the cost

We don't publish prices because the numbers change from house to house. The main drivers are:

  • wall area and number of stories
  • which manufacturer and profile you choose
  • factory-finished versus field-painted boards
  • the amount of trim and detailing
  • how much WRB or sheathing repair turns up after tear-off
  • window integration
  • any HOA-specified details
  • site access

We price the job after measuring the home and seeing the walls. You can browse completed work on our projects page and see the other communities we serve on the Wine Country service area page.

FAQ

Will fiber cement help if my Windsor home is in a fire-hazard zone? It's a strong choice because fiber cement is generally noncombustible, and where Chapter 7A applies, noncombustible wall coverings are one recognized compliance path. Whether 7A applies depends on your parcel's designation and your project's scope. We confirm that with the Town of Windsor Building Division before speccing materials. Remember, too, that vents, eaves, and windows also factor into how a house performs in a fire.

Is fiber cement the same as James Hardie? No. James Hardie is one manufacturer of fiber cement, and Allura and Nichiha are others. We can compare them for your home, or you can read our Windsor James Hardie page if you've already settled on that brand.

How does fiber cement hold up in Windsor's summer heat? Well. It doesn't soften or warp in high heat, and paint generally lasts longer on it than on wood. Sun-exposed walls will still eventually need repainting on field-painted boards. Factory finishes typically extend that interval.

Can I put fiber cement over my existing siding? We don't recommend it. Removing the old cladding is the only way to inspect and correct the WRB and flashing underneath. Most manufacturers' installation requirements also assume a proper substrate.
