Fiber cement has become the default answer for a lot of Rodeo homeowners re-cladding an older bayside house, and the reason is simple: it's a cement-based board that doesn't rot, doesn't feed insects, and doesn't burn, yet it can be milled to look like painted wood lap, shingle, or a smooth modern panel. On a lot that catches steady wind and salt off San Pablo Bay, those are exactly the properties that decide how a wall ages. Bay Area Siding Company is a Larkspur-based siding and window contractor working across west Contra Costa, and we install fiber cement from the substrate outward — not just the boards, but the water-resistive barrier and flashing that make the whole system last.

What fiber cement actually is — and why it suits the bay

The material is a blend of Portland cement, sand, and cellulose fiber, pressed and cured into rigid boards. That composition is what gives it its headline traits. It's dimensionally stable, so it doesn't cup or swell the way wood and some engineered panels do when they take on moisture — a meaningful advantage a few hundred yards from a tidal bay. It's noncombustible. It holds paint for long intervals because the surface doesn't move much underneath the finish. And it shrugs off the rot and pest pressure that shorten the life of solid-wood cladding in a damp climate.

The honest trade-offs: fiber cement is heavy, which makes proper fastening and careful handling part of doing it right, and it wants a skilled install to get the joints, clearances, and flashing correct. Cutting it also produces silica dust, so it's a material for a crew that handles it every week, not a weekend project. Done well, it's one of the longest-lived claddings you can put on a Rodeo home; done carelessly, its weight and brittleness work against you.

Fiber cement is a category, not a single brand

This is the part most homeowners don't realize until they start shopping. "Fiber cement" spans several manufacturers, and they're not identical:

  • James Hardie — the most widely specified line in California, sold here in the HZ10 product designation formulated for our climate; we cover it in depth on the Rodeo James Hardie page.
  • Allura — a competing fiber-cement line with its own lap, panel, and shake profiles.
  • Nichiha — known for architectural panel systems and deep textures, often chosen for a more contemporary look.

They share the core fiber-cement strengths but differ in available profiles, textures, finish programs, and warranty terms. Part of what we do on a Rodeo walkthrough is match the line to the look you want and the budget you're working with, rather than assuming one brand fits every house.

How it compares to the alternatives

Fiber cement usually gets cross-shopped against three things:

  • Vinyl costs less and never needs repainting, but it doesn't offer the noncombustibility or the substantial, painted-wood look — see vinyl siding if budget leads.
  • LP SmartSide (engineered wood) is lighter, easier to handle, and warmer in texture, but it does need periodic paint and isn't noncombustible — worth reading the LP SmartSide page.
  • Solid wood gives the most authentic grain but demands the most upkeep and burns.

For a salt-exposed, low-maintenance-minded owner, fiber cement tends to win on total cost of ownership. Browse the wider fiber cement category or siding replacement hub to see how the pieces fit.

Installing it right on a bayside wall

A tear-off comes first: we remove the old cladding to expose the sheathing or substrate, the water-resistive barrier, and the flashing at windows, doors, and transitions. On many older Rodeo homes those layers are thin, patched, or original, and you can't assess them without opening the wall. We correct what needs correcting, renew the WRB and flashing, then hang the fiber cement with the right fastening, gapping, and paint or factory finish. On a windy waterfront site, the flashing and moisture detailing matter as much as the board itself — that's what keeps wind-driven rain out of the assembly.

Permits in unincorporated Rodeo

Rodeo isn't its own city, so building permits run through Contra Costa County's Department of Conservation and Development (Building Inspection). Re-siding is an alteration under the county building ordinance and isn't on the list of work that skips a permit, so we pull it and carry the inspections as part of the job. The practical benefit is a second set of eyes on the wall at the right stages.

What drives the cost

We don't post prices, because fiber cement pricing turns on your specifics: the square footage and number of stories, the profile and finish you pick (smooth vs. woodgrain, factory color vs. field paint), how much substrate repair surfaces at tear-off, the trim and flashing detail the design calls for, and access around the lot. You get a real number after we measure and see the walls.

Rodeo fiber cement FAQs

Is fiber cement worth it this close to the bay? For most owners, yes. Its dimensional stability and rot resistance are exactly what a damp, salty, windy exposure asks for, and it holds paint longer than wood in that environment — which is where the long-term value shows up.

Which fiber-cement brand should I choose? It depends on the look and budget. James Hardie has the broadest California presence; Allura and Nichiha offer their own profiles and textures. We compare them on site against your house rather than pushing one line.

Do I need a permit for fiber cement siding in Rodeo? Yes. Because Rodeo is unincorporated, permitting goes through Contra Costa County's Department of Conservation and Development (Building Inspection). Re-siding is a permitted alteration, and we handle it.

Does fiber cement need painting? Factory-finished lines arrive pre-coated and go long intervals before refinishing; primed board is painted in the field. Either way it repaints far less often than wood because the surface stays stable.
