If you are replacing siding in San Rafael, fiber cement is likely on your short list. The reasons are practical. It does not burn. It resists rot, insects, and moisture. It holds paint well, and it can pass for painted wood clapboard, shingle, or the vertical board look of a mid-century home. Bay Area Siding Company installs fiber cement across San Rafael from our base in Larkspur, a few minutes down the 101. This page covers the material category as a whole: what it is, where it earns its cost, where it doesn't, and how to choose among the brands.

Want to know if fiber cement is right for your house? Call (415) 619-5167 or request a bid.

What fiber cement actually is

Fiber cement is a composite of cement, sand, and cellulose fibers. It is pressed into planks, panels, shingles, and trim boards. The cement and sand provide hardness and fire resistance. The cellulose adds enough flexibility that boards can be handled and fastened without shattering.

The material does not feed wood-boring insects, and it does not rot the way wood does. It also stays dimensionally stable through wet winters and dry summers, so paint lines and joints hold up better than on many other claddings.

The trade-offs are real:

  • Weight. Fiber cement is heavy, so installation takes more labor than vinyl or engineered wood.
  • Fabrication. Cutting it produces silica dust. Installers need proper tools and dust control.
  • Detailing. Clearances, joint treatment, and flashing have to follow the manufacturer's instructions for the product to perform and for warranty coverage to apply.

Done carelessly, fiber cement can underperform. Done to spec, it is one of the most durable claddings available for a Marin house.

Why fiber cement fits San Rafael

Fire-hazard designations

San Rafael is Marin's largest city. A good share of its terrain is wooded hillside and canyon, and much of it now carries a wildfire designation.

Under California's SB 63, the state's 2025 Fire Hazard Severity Zone update maps Moderate, High, and Very High zones across Local Responsibility Areas. The City has noted that these maps largely mirror its existing Wildland-Urban Interface boundaries, which already carry specific building requirements. San Rafael also enforces vegetation management standards citywide.

For homeowners in those areas, a noncombustible cladding is a sensible starting point. Still, we don't treat siding as the whole answer. Wildfire building requirements under California's Chapter 7A apply to specific assemblies and components, including:

  • exterior wall coverings
  • eaves and vents
  • windows and decks

Whether and how they apply depends on your parcel and the scope of work. We confirm the requirements with the City of San Rafael Building Division before we finalize a specification.

Varied housing stock

San Rafael's houses are unusually mixed, and fiber cement adapts to most of them:

  • Terra Linda Eichlers and mid-century tracts. Vertical panel and board-and-batten profiles can echo the clean lines these houses were built with.
  • Older homes around Gerstle Park and the blocks near downtown. Lap siding and shingle products can carry a traditional look without the repaint-and-repair cycle of aging wood.
  • Hillside homes in Sun Valley and above downtown. These can pair fire-conscious material choice with a finish that suits the neighborhood.

Local weather

Much of the city sees morning fog and damp winters followed by warm, dry inland afternoons. A cladding that tolerates moisture and holds paint through sun exposure is simply a good match for that pattern.

Choosing among fiber cement brands

"Fiber cement" is a category, not a single product. We install several brands and help you compare them on appearance, profiles, finish options, and availability.

  • James Hardie is the most widely recognized name. It offers the HZ10 product line designed for California conditions, a transferable 30-year non-prorated substrate limited warranty, and a 15-year ColorPlus finish warranty when installed to spec. Its factory-applied ColorPlus finish is a major draw if you'd rather not field-paint. We cover it in depth on our San Rafael James Hardie siding page and the Bay Area James Hardie hub.
  • Allura makes fiber cement lap siding, shingle, and panel products. It is worth comparing when you want a fiber cement look and are weighing options by profile and budget.
  • Nichiha is known especially for architectural panel products. These can suit contemporary designs and larger flat wall planes, which is relevant on some modern remodels and mid-century homes.

The right brand often comes down to three things: the profile your house calls for, whether you want a factory finish or field paint, and lead time. We'll lay those out side by side rather than pushing a default. For the full category overview, see our Bay Area fiber cement siding hub.

Fiber cement versus the alternatives

Fiber cement is not the only good answer, and for some San Rafael homes it isn't the right one.

  • LP SmartSide engineered wood is lighter and easier to work, with a warm wood texture. It needs periodic painting and doesn't bring fiber cement's noncombustibility.
  • Vinyl and CertainTeed lines usually cost the least and never need repainting. The look is less premium, and they are a weaker fit on fire-zone parcels.
  • Natural wood remains the choice for owners who want authentic cedar or redwood character. It carries the highest maintenance and is combustible, which matters in mapped hazard zones.

If you're still deciding on a material, our San Rafael siding replacement page walks through the broader re-side decision.

How a fiber cement job goes

Tear-off and inspection. We remove the existing cladding down to the sheathing. That exposes the water-resistive barrier and the flashing at windows, doors, and penetrations so we can see what condition they're in. Damaged sheathing gets repaired. We only open up framing if the sheathing itself has failed, which is a larger scope we discuss with you before proceeding.

New weather layer. We install a new or repaired WRB and flash every opening so the wall sheds water correctly behind the new siding.

Installation to spec. The fiber cement goes up per the manufacturer's instructions, including the required clearances and fastening.

Finish. Trim, joint treatment, and either the factory finish or field paint complete the job, followed by a walkthrough with you.

Permits. A full siding replacement in San Rafael generally requires a building permit. We handle the Building Division process as part of the project.

What drives the cost

We price each home individually. The main variables are:

  • total wall area and number of stories
  • site access and scaffolding needs
  • the amount of trim and architectural detail
  • factory-finished versus field-painted product
  • how much sheathing or flashing repair the tear-off reveals
  • removal and disposal of the old siding
  • any fire-zone detailing your parcel requires

Hillside lots with tight access and homes with extensive trim tend toward the higher end. Simple single-story walls tend toward the lower end.

Why a Larkspur crew for a San Rafael job

We're a Marin-based siding and window company, not a regional operation dispatching from across a bridge. Being minutes from Terra Linda, Gerstle Park, and the hills above downtown means faster site visits and easier scheduling. It also means we know the local permit process. Browse finished exteriors in our project gallery, and see where else we work on our Marin service area page. If your windows are also due, our San Rafael window replacement team can coordinate both scopes.

Frequently asked questions

Do I need a permit for fiber cement siding in San Rafael? A full siding replacement generally requires a building permit from the City of San Rafael. We manage that process and confirm any added requirements tied to your parcel's fire-hazard designation.

My home is in a San Rafael fire hazard zone. Is fiber cement enough to comply? Fiber cement is noncombustible and a strong choice for exterior walls, but wildfire requirements cover specific assemblies such as vents, eaves, and windows as well as siding. We confirm what applies to your parcel and scope with the Building Division before finalizing the plan.

Can fiber cement suit my Terra Linda Eichler? Often, yes. Vertical panel and board-and-batten profiles can preserve mid-century lines, and panel products from brands like Nichiha suit larger flat walls. We'll show you options that respect the architecture.

Should I choose James Hardie or another fiber cement brand? It depends on the profile you want, whether you prefer a factory finish, and product availability. We install several brands and will compare them honestly for your home.
