CertainTeed is one of the largest names in residential siding. Its catalog covers several very different products: standard vinyl, foam-backed insulated vinyl, polymer shakes and shingles, and fiber cement. That range is useful in South Lake Tahoe, because the right answer for a lakeside cabin, a 1970s A-frame, and a newer home in the trees is rarely the same board.

Bay Area Siding Company is a Larkspur-based siding and window contractor. We install CertainTeed products, and we'll help you work out which part of the lineup, if any, fits a house that sits under snow for months at 6,200-plus feet.

Weighing CertainTeed against other options? Call (415) 619-5167 or request a bid.

The CertainTeed lineup, sorted for a mountain house

Choosing CertainTeed is really choosing among its product families. Each one answers Tahoe's conditions differently.

Standard vinyl: Monogram and Mainstreet

These are CertainTeed's conventional vinyl clapboard lines. Monogram is positioned as the heavier, more premium profile, and Mainstreet as the more budget-oriented option.

The strengths are real:

  • Color is through-body, so there is no repainting.
  • Upkeep is minimal.
  • Cost sits at the accessible end of the siding market.

Up here, the trade-offs deserve an honest look:

  • Temperature swings. Vinyl expands and contracts with heat and cold. Tahoe's big day-to-night swings make correct installation non-negotiable. Panels have to hang loose on their fasteners with room to move, or they buckle in summer sun and pull tight in January.
  • Cold impact. Vinyl becomes stiffer and more impact-sensitive in deep cold. That matters on walls that take shoveled snow, sliding roof snow, or a stray snowblower.
  • UV exposure. High-altitude UV is strong. Color choice and product grade matter on south- and west-facing walls.

Insulated vinyl: CedarBoards

CedarBoards pairs a vinyl face with a rigid foam backing. CertainTeed's former Craneboard insulated line now consolidates here.

The foam makes each panel noticeably more rigid, so it lies flatter and resists dents better than hollow-back vinyl. On a Tahoe wall, that rigidity is the practical selling point. The foam can also add some insulating value to the wall assembly.

How much that insulation matters for your home depends on the rest of the wall. We don't promise specific energy savings. In most cases, the bigger comfort gains in a drafty mountain house come from air-sealing and from the windows.

Polymer shakes and shingles: Cedar Impressions

For many Tahoe buyers, this is the most interesting part of the lineup. Cedar Impressions reproduces the look of cedar shakes and shingles in molded polymer.

It suits the cabin and mountain-lodge character common around the basin, without the staining, splitting, and moisture problems real cedar develops under a snowpack. Many owners use it for the whole house. Others use it on gables and accent walls, paired with lap siding below.

Fiber cement: WeatherBoards

CertainTeed has also offered fiber cement under the WeatherBoards name. Fiber cement is noncombustible as a material category, and it resists rot and pests. That puts it in a different class from vinyl in a town the Caldor Fire emptied in 2021.

Product availability and cold-climate installation guidance can change, so we confirm the current WeatherBoards lineup and the manufacturer's cold-weather requirements before specifying it. If fiber cement is the direction you're leaning, compare it with our James Hardie page for South Lake Tahoe and the broader fiber cement category.

Fire exposure changes which CertainTeed product makes sense

This is the most important filter for a South Lake Tahoe home, so we raise it early in any conversation.

Vinyl and polymer products are combustible. Some parcels fall under California Building Code Chapter 7A, which sets requirements for exterior wall coverings and other specific assemblies. On those parcels, a standard vinyl product generally won't satisfy the wall-covering requirements unless it's part of a tested, compliant assembly.

South Lake Tahoe is a Local Responsibility Area that CAL FIRE maps separately. Whether 7A applies to your address, and to your specific scope, is something we confirm with the City of South Lake Tahoe rather than assume.

In practice, homeowners here tend to land in one of three places:

  • Fire-zone or tree-exposed parcels. These usually point toward fiber cement: CertainTeed WeatherBoards, James Hardie, or another fiber-cement brand.
  • Parcels where vinyl is permissible and budget leads. CedarBoards or Monogram, installed with snow clearance in mind, can be a sensible choice.
  • Mixed approaches. Where code allows, some owners use fiber cement on the main walls and polymer shakes as accents.

We'll tell you plainly if a CertainTeed vinyl product is the wrong fit for your parcel.

Snow, meltwater, and what's behind the panels

No siding brand fixes a bad wall. When we replace old cladding, the tear-off takes the wall down to the sheathing and substrate. Framing is only exposed if sheathing itself has failed and has to come off. At that point we can inspect and correct the layers that decide whether a Tahoe wall stays dry:

  • Sheathing. We check it for freeze damage and rot, especially along the lower courses where snow banks up.
  • Water-resistive barrier. We renew it so wind-driven snow and meltwater drain out.
  • Flashing. We detail it at windows, doors, deck ledgers, and roof-wall intersections.
  • Clearance. We set the new siding so its bottom edge sits above the expected snowpack line wherever practical.

Vinyl is designed with the expectation that some water will get behind it. That makes a sound WRB and flashing more important with vinyl, not less. CertainTeed publishes detailed installation instructions for each product, and we follow them.

Color and design: TRPA has a say

South Lake Tahoe exterior projects can answer to two authorities.

City of South Lake Tahoe. The City's Building Division, within the Development Services Department, handles the building permit.

Tahoe Regional Planning Agency (TRPA). TRPA administers water-quality BMPs, land coverage, and scenic standards. Its scenic guidance generally favors muted, earth-tone colors and low-reflectivity finishes that let buildings recede into the forest.

CertainTeed offers wide color and texture ranges across its lines. We steer selections toward palettes consistent with that guidance, but TRPA makes the call. Whether your re-side triggers TRPA review depends on the property and scope, and TRPA offers planner appointments to confirm your category.

What drives the cost

We price after a site visit, not online. The main variables are:

  • Product family. Standard vinyl, insulated vinyl, polymer shakes, and fiber cement each sit at a different price level.
  • Trim, accessories, and profiles.
  • Wall area and complexity. Gables, dormers, and A-frame geometry add labor.
  • Substrate repairs. Any sheathing or moisture damage found at tear-off adds to the scope.
  • Flashing work around decks and rooflines.
  • Access. Staging on steep or wooded lots, and scheduling around the snow season, both affect cost.
  • Permits. Any City or TRPA requirements, including a BMP retrofit if one applies.

You can see examples of our work on the projects page.

Frequently asked questions

Is CertainTeed vinyl siding a good idea in South Lake Tahoe? It can be, on the right parcel. Insulated CedarBoards handles cold-weather impact better than hollow-back vinyl, and any vinyl here needs expansion-aware installation and snow clearance. On parcels where Chapter 7A applies, standard vinyl generally isn't the right choice. We confirm your parcel's status with the City first.

Can I get a cedar-shake look without real cedar's upkeep? Yes. That's what CertainTeed's Cedar Impressions polymer shakes are designed for. They are still a combustible product, though, so fire-zone parcels may need a fiber-cement alternative instead.

Does TRPA restrict my siding color? TRPA's scenic standards generally favor muted, earth-tone, low-reflectivity exteriors. Whether your specific project needs TRPA review depends on the property and scope. We treat it as part of scoping, and TRPA planners can confirm your category.

How does CertainTeed compare with James Hardie or LP SmartSide? CertainTeed's strength is breadth, running from budget vinyl to insulated vinyl, polymer shakes, and fiber cement. James Hardie is a fiber-cement specialist. LP SmartSide is engineered wood with a real-wood texture. Our CertainTeed hub and vinyl siding page go deeper.
