CertainTeed is a brand, not a single product. The name covers several lap siding lines, cedar-look shakes and shingles, insulated panels, and polymer shakes. Most San Leandro homeowners who ask about CertainTeed want one thing: walls that stop needing paint every few years without looking like a cheap patch job.

Bay Area Siding Company installs CertainTeed siding across San Leandro:

  • the Craftsman and bungalow blocks downtown and around Broadmoor
  • the long, low postwar ranch tracts
  • hillside homes above Bay-O-Vista

We're a Larkspur-based siding and window contractor working throughout the East Bay. We'll help you pick the right line for your house, not just the right color.

Want to see what CertainTeed would look like on your house? Request a bid or call (415) 619-5167.

Choosing within the CertainTeed lineup

CertainTeed covers more ground than most single-material brands. The lines below are the ones most relevant to San Leandro housing. Product availability and naming change over time, so we confirm the current lineup and colors when we spec your job.

Standard lap vinyl: Mainstreet and Monogram

For a straightforward horizontal lap look, these two lines are the workhorses.

  • Mainstreet is the more budget-conscious option.
  • Monogram is a step up in thickness and in the range of colors and profiles.

On a 1950s ranch with a simple roofline and long runs of wall, either can read cleanly. We'll talk through panel thickness, exposure (reveal), and how the trim will meet your windows and eaves. Those details decide whether vinyl looks crisp or looks wavy.

Insulated vinyl: CedarBoards

CertainTeed's insulated line bonds a contoured foam backing to the vinyl panel. The former Craneboard insulated line now sits within this family.

The foam fills the space behind the panel. That makes the wall feel more solid, helps the siding lie flatter over long walls, and adds some thermal resistance. We don't promise a specific energy-bill result: that depends on your whole wall and the rest of the house. But for owners who dislike the hollow feel of standard vinyl, insulated panels are often the deciding factor.

Cedar Impressions shakes and shingles

This is where CertainTeed pulls ahead of many vinyl brands for San Leandro's older housing. Craftsman bungalows and cottages often carry shingle detail in the gables or across the upper story.

Cedar Impressions reproduces that shingle texture without the scraping, staining, and splitting that real cedar demands. A common approach on a bungalow is:

  • lap siding on the main walls
  • Cedar Impressions shingles in the gable ends

This keeps the house's proportions intact instead of flattening everything into one texture.

Polymer shakes and fiber cement

CertainTeed also makes polymer shake products and has offered fiber cement under the WeatherBoards name. If your priority is noncombustibility or a painted-board look, we'll compare those options side by side with other manufacturers. Our fiber cement and James Hardie pages cover that category in depth. On most San Leandro inquiries, the CertainTeed conversation centers on the vinyl family.

Honest trade-offs

CertainTeed vinyl earns its popularity, but it isn't right for every house or every owner.

Where it's strong:

  • No repainting, because the color runs through the panel
  • Nothing to rot or feed termites in the cladding itself
  • Wide color and profile selection
  • A lower installed cost than most fiber cement or wood systems

Where to be clear-eyed:

  • Vinyl can distort under intense concentrated heat, such as a grill set too close to the wall.
  • Deep, dark colors are more limited than with paintable siding.
  • Up close, it doesn't carry the same heft as fiber cement or real wood.
  • Vinyl is combustible. That matters on the handful of San Leandro parcels in mapped fire-hazard zones (see below).

If those trade-offs give you pause, our vinyl siding overview compares vinyl brands more broadly. LP SmartSide is worth a look if you want a real-wood texture you can paint.

How CertainTeed fits San Leandro's conditions

Marine air, mild temperatures. Most of San Leandro sits on the bay plain. Walls here see damp, bay-influenced air and plenty of fog, and rarely the prolonged inland heat that bakes siding in the Tri-Valley. For vinyl, that's a comfortable setting. There's no paint film to blister in the damp and no wood to swell. What still matters is the wall behind the siding. Vinyl is a rain screen, not a waterproof skin, so some water always gets behind it. The weather barrier and flashing underneath do the real waterproofing work.

Permits. Re-siding in San Leandro goes through the City of San Leandro Building & Safety Division, part of the Community Development Department. What the submittal needs depends on your scope. We confirm the requirements with the division for your specific project and handle the paperwork, so the work is on record if you refinance or sell.

The hillside exception. The State Fire Marshal's 2025 maps added Moderate and High Fire Hazard Severity areas toward the city's eastern edge and the slopes above Bay-O-Vista. If your parcel falls in a mapped zone, California Building Code Chapter 7A can apply to exterior wall coverings, depending on the parcel and the scope of work. That can rule out standard vinyl or push you toward an ignition-resistant or noncombustible assembly.

We check your designation before recommending a product. If vinyl is off the table, CertainTeed's fiber cement or another noncombustible option may be the better fit. For most homes on the flat, fire code isn't the deciding factor. Look, durability, and budget are.

What installation involves

A CertainTeed job with us starts with removing the existing cladding, whether that's worn T1-11, old hardboard, chalky aluminum, or original wood. Removal takes the wall down to the sheathing so we can inspect three things:

  • the sheathing (substrate) itself
  • the water-resistive barrier
  • the flashing around windows and doors

On San Leandro's 1920s–1960s housing, that inspection often turns up missing or failed barrier paper, or window openings that were never properly flashed. We correct those before new siding goes on. Only if the sheathing itself has deteriorated does the repair reach the framing.

Vinyl then goes up to CertainTeed's installation instructions:

  • nails driven in the slots with room for the panels to expand and contract, never pinned tight
  • proper clearances at trim and corners
  • starter strips and J-channel detailed to shed water

Loose-hung vinyl that's installed correctly stays flat. Vinyl nailed tight is what buckles.

If windows are on your list too, doing them before or with the siding lets the flashing tie in cleanly. See our San Leandro window replacement page.

What drives the price

We don't publish prices because every wall is different. The main cost factors are:

  • Product line. Mainstreet costs less than Monogram, and insulated CedarBoards cost more than either.
  • Accent material. How much Cedar Impressions shake or shingle you include.
  • House size and shape. Wall area, number of stories, and roofline complexity.
  • Openings and corners. How many windows, doors, and corners need trim.
  • Hidden repairs. Sheathing or flashing repair uncovered at tear-off.
  • Access. Hillside lots are harder to work on than flat ones.

A written scope after an on-site look is the only reliable number.

FAQs

Does CertainTeed vinyl hold up near the bay in San Leandro? Vinyl doesn't rot and doesn't need paint, so damp, foggy bay-plain conditions are generally a good match. Long-term performance depends heavily on what's behind the siding. That's why we inspect and correct the weather barrier and flashing during tear-off.

Can I use CertainTeed vinyl if my home is above Bay-O-Vista? Possibly. It depends on whether your parcel falls in one of the fire hazard zones mapped in 2025 and what Chapter 7A requires for your scope. We confirm the designation with the city before specifying product, and we'll recommend a noncombustible alternative if needed.

What warranty comes with CertainTeed siding? CertainTeed offers limited warranties whose terms vary by product line. We walk you through the actual warranty for the specific line you choose. Proper installation to the manufacturer's instructions is part of keeping that coverage valid.

Will vinyl look right on a Broadmoor bungalow? It can, if the profile, reveal, and trim are chosen with care. Pairing lap siding with Cedar Impressions shingles in the gables often preserves a bungalow's character better than a single texture across the whole house.
