CertainTeed is less a single siding product than a catalog. One manufacturer offers traditional vinyl lap, foam-backed insulated vinyl, polymer shakes and shingles, and fiber cement. For a San Mateo homeowner, that range is the main appeal. You can choose the material that fits your house and your budget, then pick a profile within the same brand family instead of starting from scratch with each option. Bay Area Siding Company is a Marin-based siding and window contractor, and we install CertainTeed products on Peninsula homes. We'll help you work out which CertainTeed line, if any, belongs on yours.

What's actually in the CertainTeed lineup

It helps to know the families before you look at color charts:

  • Vinyl lap siding (Monogram, Mainstreet). These are CertainTeed's conventional vinyl lines. They offer clapboard and Dutch-lap profiles with color that runs through the panel, so there is no repainting. Lines differ in panel thickness and texture, and that affects how flat and substantial a wall looks.
  • Cedar Impressions. These are polymer shakes and shingles molded to read like cedar: straight-edge, staggered, and half-round patterns. They suit gables and accent walls where real cedar shingles would need regular upkeep.
  • Insulated vinyl (CedarBoards). This is vinyl with a contoured foam backing. The foam stiffens the panel so it lies flatter, and it adds some insulating value to the wall. The former Craneboard insulated line has been consolidated here.
  • Fiber cement (WeatherBoards). This is CertainTeed's cement-based option. It is paintable, dimensionally stable, and noncombustible, and it is the closest the lineup gets to the look of painted wood.

Product names and availability change over time. We confirm what is currently offered, and in which profiles and colors, when we write your spec.

Matching the line to a San Mateo house

San Mateo's reputation as a "city of beautiful homes" rests largely on its early-to-mid-century period-revival stock: Tudor Revival, Spanish Colonial Revival, and the cottages and craftsman-era houses around them. On many of these homes the main walls are stucco. Siding shows up on gables, dormers, rear additions, and secondary elevations. That changes the CertainTeed conversation in a few practical ways.

Gables and accents. A shingled gable on a cottage or craftsman-influenced home is a natural place for Cedar Impressions. You get a shake or shingle pattern without re-staining cedar every few years. Whether it suits a particular gable depends on the exposure and how the shingle profile reads against the stucco and trim below it. We'll show you samples against your house, not just in a brochure.

Partial re-sides that must blend. If you're replacing one elevation or an addition and keeping painted wood elsewhere, vinyl's factory color won't match existing painted boards exactly. Its surface also reads differently up close. WeatherBoards fiber cement can be painted to match the rest of the house, which makes it the more forgiving choice for a partial job. If fiber cement is where you're heading, it's also worth comparing brands. See our fiber cement overview and our San Mateo James Hardie siding page.

Full re-sides on later stock. On wood-sided postwar homes where preserving period detail isn't the priority, Monogram or CedarBoards vinyl is often the most cost-effective way to end the paint cycle. Insulated panels tend to look flatter and more solid than thin standard vinyl.

Honest trade-offs

CertainTeed makes good products, but no siding is right for every house. Here's what we tell San Mateo homeowners up front:

  • Vinyl reads as vinyl. From the street, a quality vinyl line looks clean and crisp. Up close, on a house whose value is tied to period character, it is less convincing than fiber cement or wood.
  • Color is chosen once. Through-body color means no painting, but it also means you can't simply repaint later. Some vinyl lines also limit the very dark colors. Choose a color you're comfortable living with.
  • Heat exposure. Vinyl can distort under concentrated heat, for example from a grill placed too close or sunlight reflected off nearby glass. San Mateo's mild coastal climate is easier on it than the inland valleys, but placement still matters.
  • Fiber cement is heavier. WeatherBoards takes more labor and careful handling to install. That shows up in the cost, and it's why installation to the manufacturer's spec matters.

If you want real-wood texture with less weight than fiber cement, LP SmartSide engineered wood is another option worth a look. For a broad comparison of vinyl brands, including Alside, see our vinyl siding page.

Permits and San Mateo's historic neighborhoods

Siding replacement in San Mateo is permitted work, and we handle the building permit with the City of San Mateo. The bigger question for CertainTeed specifically is design review.

The State Office of Historic Preservation has identified the Baywood, Aragon, and San Mateo Park neighborhoods west of El Camino Real as National Register– or California Register–eligible historic areas. A 2022 City analysis found that the Baywood study area meets National Register district criteria. Register eligibility by itself doesn't dictate your material. Local review, if it applies to your address and scope, can weigh whether a synthetic cladding is consistent with the original design.

For that reason, if your home is in or near one of these areas, we check with the City's Planning staff before recommending vinyl or polymer shakes. We don't assume either way. Sometimes the answer points toward WeatherBoards or another paintable material. Sometimes vinyl on a rear addition is no issue at all.

How a CertainTeed job goes

We start with a site visit to look at the existing cladding, the substrate, and whether this is a full re-side or accent work. Then we narrow the CertainTeed family and profile and show you samples.

At tear-off, the old siding comes off down to the sheathing and substrate. That lets us inspect the water-resistive barrier and flashing and replace damaged sheathing where it's found. Framing is only exposed if the sheathing itself has failed.

The Peninsula's damp fog and wind-driven winter rain make the WRB and flashing details at windows, doors, and siding-to-stucco transitions more important than the panel on the outside. Vinyl is hung to allow for expansion and contraction rather than nailed tight. WeatherBoards is fastened, gapped, and finished according to CertainTeed's instructions. We close out with trim, sealant, cleanup, and a walkthrough.

What affects the cost

We quote each home individually. The main variables are:

  • which CertainTeed family you choose, since standard vinyl, insulated vinyl, polymer shakes, and fiber cement sit at different price points
  • wall area and number of stories
  • how much sheathing repair turns up at tear-off
  • the amount of trim and detailing the architecture calls for, which on period-revival homes is often a lot
  • whether a partial job has to blend with existing surfaces

Doing windows at the same time can simplify flashing work. See window replacement in San Mateo.

You can browse finished exteriors in our project gallery, read more about the brand on our CertainTeed siding hub, or compare approaches on our San Mateo siding replacement page. We serve homeowners throughout the Peninsula.

FAQ

Can I use CertainTeed vinyl on a home in Baywood, Aragon, or San Mateo Park? It depends on your specific property and scope. These neighborhoods are recognized as register-eligible, and local review may consider material consistency with the original design. We confirm with the City of San Mateo's Planning staff before recommending vinyl on these streets.

Is insulated vinyl worth it over standard vinyl? The foam backing makes panels more rigid, so walls look flatter, and it adds some insulating value. In San Mateo's mild climate, many homeowners choose it mainly for appearance and feel. We'll show you both side by side.

Does CertainTeed have a warranty? Yes. CertainTeed backs its siding lines with manufacturer warranties, and the terms vary by product family. We review the current written warranty for the specific product with you before you sign, and installing to spec keeps that coverage valid.

Do I need a permit for CertainTeed siding in San Mateo? Yes. Siding replacement requires a building permit from the City of San Mateo, and we handle the application.
