CertainTeed is a product family, not a single siding. It includes standard and premium vinyl lap, insulated vinyl panels, and polymer shakes and shingles that imitate cedar. Many Santa Cruz homeowners come to it for the same reasons. They want to stop repainting a wall that the marine layer keeps damp. They want a real range of colors and profiles. And they want a cost below fiber cement or new wood.

Bay Area Siding Company installs CertainTeed siding across the Santa Cruz area. We're a siding and window contractor based in Larkspur, in Marin County. Our job is to help you choose the right CertainTeed line for your house and then install it over a sound water-resistive barrier, with flashing built for coastal weather.

The CertainTeed lineup, matched to Santa Cruz housing

Santa Cruz housing is varied. You'll find Victorians and beach cottages on the Westside and Beach Hill, and ranch and mid-century homes toward the hills. No single CertainTeed product suits all of them. Here is how the main lines usually sort out:

  • Mainstreet (vinyl lap). CertainTeed's mainstream vinyl. It suits the many simple one- and two-story homes whose older hardboard or T1-11 siding has worn out. It's a practical, low-maintenance choice when budget leads the decision.
  • Monogram (premium vinyl lap). A heavier-duty vinyl with a more substantial look on the wall. It's worth a look if you want vinyl's low upkeep but are worried about a thin, "plastic" appearance on a street of painted wood homes.
  • Cedar Impressions (polymer shakes and shingles). These imitate cedar shingle and shake. The shingle look is common on coastal cottages, and real cedar in a damp, salty climate needs regular staining or paint. Cedar Impressions gives a similar texture with far less maintenance. It also works well as an accent on gables or a front elevation, combined with lap siding elsewhere.
  • CedarBoards (insulated vinyl). These vinyl panels have a foam backing. The foam makes the panel more rigid, so it lies flatter on imperfect walls, and adds modest insulating value. Owners who remember Craneboard often ask about it. That insulated line has consolidated under CertainTeed's insulated offerings, and we'll show you the current options.
  • Fiber cement. CertainTeed has historically sold fiber cement under the WeatherBoards name. Availability has shifted over the years, so we confirm what is currently sold before recommending it. If a noncombustible fiber-cement wall is the goal, our fiber cement and James Hardie pages cover that choice in more depth.

What vinyl does, and doesn't do, on a foggy, salt-air wall

CertainTeed vinyl has some real advantages near the coast:

  • The panel contains no metal to corrode.
  • It doesn't absorb moisture the way old hardboard does.
  • There's no paint film to blister when the substrate stays damp through a foggy summer.

It's also important to understand what vinyl is: a vented cladding. It is designed to let some water get behind it and drain back out. It is not a waterproof shell. Near the coast, where wind-driven rain comes off Monterey Bay, the layers behind the vinyl do most of the work of keeping the wall dry. Those layers are:

  • the water-resistive barrier (WRB), and
  • the flashing at window heads, sills, penetrations, and the base of the wall.

When we remove the old cladding, we take the wall down to the sheathing. That lets us inspect and correct the WRB and flashing, and find any dry rot where water has been collecting. We only open up framing if the sheathing itself turns out to be damaged. A standard re-side stops at the sheathing and WRB.

Three installation details matter more on the coast than inland:

  1. Fasteners. We use corrosion-resistant fasteners, because salt air damages ordinary ones.
  2. Hanging the panels loose. Vinyl expands and contracts with temperature. Panels have to hang loosely on their nails so they can move. If they're nailed tight, they buckle.
  3. Color choice. Santa Cruz gets a lot of UV on clear days, and vinyl color runs through the whole panel. Some lines offer fewer deep, dark colors, and very dark vinyl in full sun needs more careful product selection. We'll show you which CertainTeed colors are rated for the exposure your walls actually get.

Where CertainTeed may not be the right call

Being honest about fit up front saves time later. Two local situations call for a closer look.

Historic districts. Santa Cruz has recognized historic areas, including the Downtown, the West Side residential districts, and the Victorian blocks around Beach Hill and Walnut Avenue. A home in one of these areas may need historic review by the city's Planning Division for exterior changes, and that review can affect which profiles and materials are acceptable. Vinyl on a contributing Victorian can be a harder sell than a period-correct wood siding profile or a smooth fiber cement that reads as painted wood. We check this before you commit to a product.

Hillside and wooded parcels. The 2020 CZU Lightning Complex burned in the mountains above the city. The developed coastal core wasn't burned, but some parcels on the wooded upper edges of the area can carry a fire-hazard or WUI designation. Vinyl is combustible. Where a designation genuinely applies, California Building Code Chapter 7A can govern the exterior wall covering and push the choice toward noncombustible or ignition-resistant materials. Whether it applies depends on your parcel's mapped designation and the project scope. We confirm this with the city rather than assume. If your lot is affected, fiber cement is usually the better starting point. See our Santa Cruz James Hardie page for more.

If you like the look of real wood but want something more durable than vinyl, LP SmartSide engineered wood is another option to compare. Unlike vinyl, it does need periodic painting.

Permits for a CertainTeed re-side in Santa Cruz

Switching to CertainTeed is still a siding replacement, and the City of Santa Cruz Building Division requires a building permit for it. The permit sequence runs like this:

  1. The submitted plans must show the new cladding going over suitable sheathing with a water-resistive barrier, per the California Building Code.
  2. The WRB is inspected before any siding goes on.
  3. A final inspection closes out the permit.

Much of the city is inside the Coastal Zone Overlay District. Ordinary improvements to an existing single-family home are generally exempt from a separate coastal development permit. Lots on a beach or bluff, near a wetland, or seaward of the mean high-tide line are different, and we confirm the requirements before scoping those. We handle the permit and schedule the inspections.

How the job goes

  1. Walkthrough. We visit the house, look at the existing siding and trim, and talk through which CertainTeed line and colors make sense.
  2. Written scope. You get a scope that covers:
    • tear-off,
    • WRB and flashing work,
    • the product and trim package, and
    • an allowance approach for any hidden repairs.
  3. Permit and installation. Once the permit is issued, we remove the old siding, inspect and correct the substrate, and pass the WRB inspection. Then we hang the new panels with the expansion gaps and clearances CertainTeed specifies.
  4. Close-out. We finish with trim, sealant at the appropriate joints, cleanup, and the final inspection.

For examples of our exterior work, see our projects.

What drives the cost of a CertainTeed project

We don't post prices, because the real number depends on your specific house. The main cost drivers are:

  • Product line. Mainstreet is generally the most economical, while Monogram, insulated CedarBoards, and Cedar Impressions shakes cost more.
  • Wall area and complexity. Gables, corners, and many window openings add labor.
  • Substrate repairs. How much rot or sheathing repair turns up once the old siding is off.
  • Flashing work. How much new flashing the windows and penetrations need.
  • Trim and accessories. The trim and accessory package you choose.
  • Access. Hillside lots and tall walls take more setup time.

Replacing windows at the same time can save some duplicated work at the openings. See our Santa Cruz window replacement page for more on that.

CertainTeed siding FAQs for Santa Cruz

Will CertainTeed vinyl hold up to salt air near the beach? The vinyl panel itself has no metal to corrode and doesn't absorb water, so it handles salt air well. Near the coast, the weak points are fasteners, flashing, and the WRB behind the panels. That's why we use corrosion-resistant fasteners and correct the wall layers before installing.

Can I put CertainTeed siding on a house in a Santa Cruz historic district? Possibly, but it depends on the property. Homes in the Downtown, West Side, or Beach Hill historic areas may need Planning Division review for exterior changes, which can limit material and profile choices. We check before you choose a product.

Is CertainTeed's shake-look siding a reasonable substitute for real cedar shingles? For many coastal cottages, yes. Cedar Impressions polymer shakes give a similar texture without the regular staining that real cedar needs in a damp climate. Up close it doesn't look identical to natural wood, and on a historic home the review process may have the final say.

Does CertainTeed come with a warranty? Yes. CertainTeed backs its siding lines with manufacturer warranties, and coverage terms vary by product. We'll give you the current warranty documents for the specific line you choose, and proper installation to CertainTeed's specifications is part of keeping that coverage valid.
