CertainTeed is a single manufacturer with several siding materials. The lineup includes standard vinyl lap, insulated vinyl, polymer shakes, and fiber cement. That range suits Valley Springs well, because two neighboring properties here can need very different products.

A subdivision home in Rancho Calaveras or La Contenta may be a good fit for a low-maintenance vinyl profile. An older ranch house on acreage off Highway 12 or 26, on a parcel with a fire-hazard designation, may need something noncombustible on its regulated walls. With CertainTeed, you can often stay with one brand in either case. The real work is picking the right product from the lineup.

Bay Area Siding Company is a siding and window contractor based in Larkspur, in Marin County, and we work in Calaveras County and the Sierra foothills. We install CertainTeed siding, and we also install competing products. Our aim is to fit the product to your house, your parcel, and your budget, not to steer you toward one brand.

The CertainTeed lineup, piece by piece

It helps to see the lineup as separate products that share a brand name:

  • Monogram. CertainTeed's heavier-gauge, premium vinyl lap line. Choose it if you want vinyl that looks crisper and more substantial on a long wall.
  • Mainstreet. A mainstream vinyl lap line with a wide selection of profiles and colors. It's the value choice for a straightforward re-side.
  • Cedar Impressions. Polymer shakes and shingles that give the look of cedar without staining, splitting, or rot. People often use them on gables and accent areas, or across a whole façade on a ranch-style home.
  • CedarBoards insulated siding. Vinyl with a contoured foam backing. The foam makes the panels stiffer and flatter on the wall and adds some insulation. CertainTeed's former Craneboard insulated line has been consolidated into this category.
  • WeatherBoards fiber cement. CertainTeed's cement-based product. This is the lineup's answer when a parcel or homeowner calls for a noncombustible cladding.

CertainTeed backs its siding with strong limited warranties. Coverage and terms differ by product line, and they assume the siding is installed to the manufacturer's specification. We'll go over the current written warranty for the specific product you choose, not a general promise.

Start with the parcel, not the color chart

In Valley Springs, the first question for a CertainTeed project is whether any of your exterior walls fall under wildfire building rules. Looks come second.

Much of Calaveras County lies in a State Responsibility Area with mapped fire hazard severity zones, and Cal Fire updated those maps in 2025. On a designated parcel, California Building Code Chapter 7A can govern the exterior wall covering on the assemblies it regulates. It pushes those walls toward noncombustible or ignition-resistant materials.

This matters for CertainTeed because most of the lineup is combustible:

  • Standard vinyl, insulated vinyl, and polymer shakes are generally not the route for a regulated wall.
  • WeatherBoards fiber cement is the product in the family built for that job.

Chapter 7A does not treat every house, wall, or scope the same way. Whether it applies depends on:

  • the parcel's designation
  • the specific assemblies involved
  • whether the county classifies the work as a repair or an alteration

Valley Springs is unincorporated, so that determination comes from the Calaveras County Building Division, not a city building department. We confirm your parcel's status during scoping, before we quote any product. That way you don't fall in love with a vinyl color and then learn it can't go on the wall you had in mind.

If fire hardening is the main concern, compare WeatherBoards with the options on our fiber cement category page and our Valley Springs James Hardie page.

Living with vinyl through a foothill summer

Where vinyl is allowed and makes sense, it has real advantages:

  • no repainting, ever
  • low cost compared with the premium materials
  • easy upkeep, usually just an occasional rinse

We'll also be direct about the trade-offs in a place where afternoons often pass 100 degrees and the south and west walls bake for months.

Heat and UV are what wear vinyl. Over time, color can fade on the sunniest elevations. Under extreme heat, vinyl can soften or distort. Concentrated reflected sunlight, such as a nearby window bouncing sun onto one spot, is a known cause of warping on vinyl products in general. None of this rules out vinyl here. It does shape how we plan the job:

  • Color. Lighter and mid-tone colors are the forgiving choice on hot exposures. Dark vinyl colors are limited on some lines and deserve a careful discussion before you commit.
  • Line choice. A heavier-gauge panel like Monogram, or a foam-backed CedarBoards panel, stays flatter and more rigid across a long, sun-heavy wall than a thinner panel.
  • Installation. Vinyl expands and contracts with temperature. Panels have to be hung loosely enough to move, with proper gaps at trim and corners. Nailing vinyl tight is one of the most common reasons a vinyl wall buckles in summer, and a big day-to-night temperature swing makes that mistake show up fast.

If you want the full vinyl comparison beyond CertainTeed, including other brands such as Alside, see our vinyl siding hub. If you like a wood look but want something you can paint and handle more easily than cement board, LP SmartSide is worth a look.

Where each CertainTeed product tends to land here

These are typical patterns, not rules:

  • Subdivision homes in Rancho Calaveras and La Contenta. Where walls aren't regulated, owners usually want low maintenance and a color that holds. Mainstreet or Monogram lap in a light-to-mid tone is the common starting point, and CedarBoards is an option if you want a flatter, more solid-feeling wall.
  • Ranch houses and older homes on acreage. Cedar Impressions shakes on gables can bring back the rustic character a lot of these homes started with. On a designated parcel, WeatherBoards may carry the regulated walls, and a polymer accent is only used where the code allows it.
  • Replacing tired T1-11 or hardboard. Many older foothill homes still have original panel siding that has swelled or delaminated. Any CertainTeed product can replace it, and the parcel's fire designation usually narrows the choice.

How a CertainTeed re-side goes

We remove the old cladding down to the sheathing or substrate. That exposes the water-resistive barrier (WRB) and the flashing at windows, doors, and penetrations, so we can inspect them before anything new goes up. Framing stays covered unless the sheathing itself has failed and has to come off.

Then the work follows a set order:

  1. We repair or replace damaged substrate.
  2. We renew the WRB and flashing where needed, which is often the case on older foothill homes whose openings relied on sun-cracked caulk.
  3. We install the CertainTeed product to the manufacturer's instructions. Vinyl gets its expansion allowances, and WeatherBoards is fastened and detailed to the fiber cement spec.

We pull the permit through the Calaveras County Building Division as part of the job. For the broader question of whether to re-side at all, and how CertainTeed compares with every other material, start with our Valley Springs siding replacement page.

What drives the cost

We don't post prices, but we can tell you what moves them:

  • Which product you choose. Mainstreet vinyl, Monogram, insulated CedarBoards, Cedar Impressions shakes, and WeatherBoards fiber cement sit at clearly different price points.
  • Wall area and complexity. Gables, bump-outs, and the number of openings all add labor.
  • Substrate and flashing repairs. How much turns up at tear-off affects the total.
  • Mixed materials. If Chapter 7A requires noncombustible cladding on some walls, the project may combine products.
  • Trim and accessories.
  • Access. A spread-out rural property or a tall wall takes more setup than a compact tract lot.

FAQ

Can I use CertainTeed vinyl on my Valley Springs home if I'm in a fire hazard zone? It depends on your parcel and which walls are regulated. Vinyl and polymer products are combustible and generally aren't the route for walls governed by Chapter 7A. CertainTeed's WeatherBoards fiber cement is the product in the lineup meant for that situation. We confirm your parcel's designation and what it triggers with the Calaveras County Building Division before recommending a product.

Will CertainTeed vinyl hold up to Valley Springs summer heat? Quality vinyl can serve well here if you choose and install it with the heat in mind. That means a heavier or foam-backed panel on sun-heavy walls, a light-to-mid color, and installation that lets the panels expand and contract. Dark colors and spots hit by reflected sun need extra care.

What's the difference between CedarBoards and regular CertainTeed vinyl? CedarBoards has a contoured foam backing. That makes the panels more rigid, helps them lie flatter on the wall, and adds some insulating value. Standard lines like Mainstreet and Monogram don't have the foam backing.

Do I need a permit for CertainTeed siding in Valley Springs? Plan on one. Valley Springs is unincorporated, so exterior re-siding goes through the Calaveras County Building Division. We handle the permit and confirm any fire-zone requirements as part of the project.
