CertainTeed is a single manufacturer with several distinct siding products, and they perform differently in a place like Truckee. Its lineup includes traditional vinyl lap, insulated vinyl, vinyl shakes and shingles, and polymer shakes. Picking the right one for a home at about 6,000 feet takes more than choosing a color from a fan deck. Snow sits against the lower walls for months. Freeze-thaw cycles work every joint. Sun at altitude is hard on finishes. On many parcels, wildfire rules also affect what can go on the wall.
Bay Area Siding Company installs CertainTeed siding. We can tell you which of its products make sense on your Truckee house, and which ones don't.

It helps to know the families before comparing prices.
CertainTeed backs its siding with manufacturer warranties that are strong compared with many alternatives. Terms differ by product line, so we review the current warranty document for the exact product you choose. We don't quote a blanket figure.
CertainTeed vinyl costs less up front than fiber cement or real wood. It also never needs repainting. That matters in Truckee, where high-altitude UV can chalk and peel a painted finish quickly, and where exterior painting is limited to a short dry season.
The color runs through the panel, so a scratch doesn't expose a different color underneath. Many Truckee homes are second homes that sit empty for weeks. For those owners, a cladding that asks almost nothing between seasons has real value.
Cold-weather impact. Vinyl gets stiffer and less impact-tolerant as temperatures drop. On a Truckee winter morning, several things can crack a panel that would have flexed in July:
Thicker premium panels and the foam-backed CedarBoards line handle this better than thin economy vinyl. That is one reason we rarely recommend the lightest-gauge products for a mountain home. We also think about where snow will slide and pile. Sometimes we suggest a more impact-tolerant material on the lowest, most exposed walls.
Thermal movement. Vinyl expands and contracts with temperature, and Truckee's day-to-night and seasonal swings are large. A good install hangs each panel so it can move. That means fasteners are not driven tight, and there are proper gaps at trim and corners. A tight install is a common cause of buckling and oil-canning. Install technique matters as much as the product.
Heat and dark colors. Very dark colors on some vinyl lines can distort under intense sun or reflected heat. CertainTeed offers darker shades engineered for this, but we'll talk through color choice on sun-facing elevations.
Look. Premium vinyl looks far better than it used to. Still, it doesn't read the same as wood or fiber cement up close. For some homes and neighborhoods, that matters.
Truckee is in the wildland-urban interface. Much of the surrounding forest is mapped at high and very high fire hazard. On parcels where the California Building Code's Chapter 7A applies, exterior wall coverings may need to meet ignition-resistance requirements.
Standard vinyl is combustible, and many vinyl siding products are not listed for those requirements. Whether this rules out vinyl on your wall depends on three things:
We confirm the requirements with the Town of Truckee before recommending a product. If vinyl isn't a workable path, we'll say so. Noncombustible fiber cement is the usual alternative; see our Truckee James Hardie page and the broader fiber cement siding guide.
Downtown is a different constraint. Commercial Row and the nearby Brickelltown blocks are part of a historic district. Siding material, profile, and color can fall under the Town's historic design guidelines there, and vinyl may be restricted or discouraged. If your home is in or next to that district, design review comes before any product decision.
Permits for re-siding go through the Town of Truckee's Building Division (Community Development Department). We handle the application and flag any design-review or fire-code step early, because those steps affect both schedule and product choice.
Most re-sides start with a full tear-off of the old cladding. That exposes the sheathing and substrate, the water-resistive barrier (WRB), and the flashing. It does not mean going "down to the studs."
In Truckee this is where the real work often is. Low walls and the areas under windows collect snowmelt. Many older cabins never had a modern WRB. We inspect the sheathing, replace a missing or failed WRB, and re-flash windows, doors, deck ledgers, and roof-to-wall transitions. We also keep the new cladding up off grade where snow piles and splashes.
If the sheathing itself has failed, replacing it is a bigger scope. We'll show you and price it before any work goes ahead.
The CertainTeed siding then goes on over that corrected assembly, hung for movement and trimmed out to the product's instructions. Timing matters here. Most homeowners plan exterior work for the snow-free months, and permit review can take time. Starting the conversation in spring or early summer gives the best shot at finishing before winter.
We don't publish prices because Truckee projects vary widely. The main factors are:
CertainTeed is one option among several. If you're still weighing materials, these pages lay out the alternatives:
For the overall re-side decision in town, see siding replacement in Truckee. If you're renewing windows at the same time, which is often efficient since the openings get re-flashed anyway, see Truckee window replacement. You can also browse completed work on our projects page and see the other communities we serve on our Tahoe–Sierra service area page.
Will CertainTeed vinyl crack in a Truckee winter? Vinyl is less impact-tolerant in the cold. A hard hit from falling ice or a thrown object can crack a panel. Heavier premium lines and insulated CedarBoards resist this better. Careful planning around roof-slide and snow-pile zones also helps. Under normal cold with no impact, a properly installed panel is designed to handle the temperature range.
Can I put vinyl siding on a Truckee home in a high fire hazard area? It depends on your parcel, your scope, and the product. Where Chapter 7A applies, wall coverings may need to meet ignition-resistance requirements that many vinyl products aren't listed for. We verify with the Town of Truckee before recommending anything. If vinyl won't pass, we'll point you to fiber cement.
Is insulated CertainTeed siding worth it at this elevation? The foam backing makes panels stiffer and adds some continuous insulation to the wall. Both are useful in a long heating season. Whether it pays off for you depends on your existing wall insulation and budget. We'll lay out the difference in our bid.
Can I use CertainTeed siding downtown? Homes in or near the downtown historic district may face design-review limits on siding material and appearance, and vinyl may not be permitted. We check the Town's guidelines for your parcel first.
