CertainTeed is one of the largest names in vinyl and polymer siding. Most Sonoma homeowners who ask about it want the same thing: an exterior that looks crisp for years without the scrape-and-repaint cycle that painted wood demands in a hot, dry valley. The brand makes a full range, from straightforward lap panels to thick premium profiles, cedar-look shakes, and insulated siding. The practical question is which of those pieces fits your house, your parcel, and your budget.

Bay Area Siding Company is a Larkspur-based (Marin) siding and window contractor working throughout the North Bay wine country. We install CertainTeed siding, and we'll tell you plainly when a different material would serve your Sonoma home better.

The CertainTeed lineup, in plain language

CertainTeed sells several distinct product families under one brand. They are not interchangeable. The differences in panel thickness, profile, and construction show up on the wall and in the price.

Mainstreet: the practical lap panel

Mainstreet is CertainTeed's mainstream vinyl lap siding. It suits a ranch or mid-century home in the neighborhoods east and north of downtown, where the goal is a clean, low-maintenance exterior at a sensible cost. It comes in familiar clapboard and Dutch lap looks.

Monogram: a heavier, more refined lap

Monogram sits above Mainstreet. It is a thicker, more rigid panel that lies flatter on the wall and reads less like "vinyl" from the street. For owners who like vinyl's upkeep but want a more substantial look, it is usually where the conversation lands.

Cedar Impressions: shakes and shingles without the staining

Cedar Impressions is polymer siding molded to resemble cedar shakes and shingles. It comes in straight-edge, staggered, and decorative profiles. It works well for gable accents, a shingled band on a bungalow, or a full shake exterior where real cedar's maintenance isn't appealing.

CedarBoards: insulated vinyl

CedarBoards pairs a vinyl face with a contoured foam backing. The foam stiffens the panel, helps it ride over minor wall irregularities, and adds some insulating value to the wall. The actual energy benefit depends on the rest of your assembly, so we won't promise specific savings.

CertainTeed backs its siding with manufacturer limited warranties. Coverage terms vary by product line and depend on correct installation, so we go over the current warranty documents for the specific line you choose rather than paraphrasing them here. For the broader brand overview, see our CertainTeed siding hub.

Where CertainTeed fits in Sonoma, and where it doesn't

This is the part most brand pages skip. It matters here more than in many Bay Area towns.

Fire-hazard designations come first. The 2017 Nuns Fire burned through the valley and hills around Sonoma. In early 2025, Cal Fire's statewide update expanded the High and Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone areas within and around the city, and that expansion is reflected in the City of Sonoma's revised map. Vinyl and polymer siding are combustible materials.

If your parcel carries one of those designations, California Building Code Chapter 7A can govern the exterior wall covering on the regulated portions of your project. That generally steers the choice toward noncombustible or ignition-resistant materials. How that applies depends on your specific parcel, the product, and the scope of work, so we confirm it with the City of Sonoma before anything is ordered. We don't assume either way.

Where the rules point away from vinyl, or you simply want more fire resilience, we'll walk you through:

Summer heat is a real design factor. Sonoma's long, sunny summers are exactly where vinyl's low upkeep pays off: there's no paint to blister and peel. Heat is also vinyl's main weakness. Panels can distort under intense heat, including sunlight concentrated off nearby reflective glass. We factor that into:

  • Color choice: very dark colors on vinyl deserve a careful look at what the manufacturer specifically rates.
  • Placement near reflective surfaces: we check for glass or other surfaces that could concentrate sunlight onto a wall.
  • Installation technique: covered in the next section.

Historic character is a style question. Around the Sonoma Plaza, a National Historic Landmark district, and among the town's Victorians and early bungalows, vinyl isn't always the right look. Depending on a property's status, it may face added review.

  • If your home sits in a historic overlay or has preservation status, tell us early. We'll raise material and profile questions with the City before specifying anything.
  • Outside historic areas, a well-chosen Monogram lap or Cedar Impressions shingle can suit many Sonoma homes nicely, especially the mid-century and ranch stock.

How CertainTeed compares to the alternatives

  • Versus other vinyl brands: CertainTeed's strength is breadth. Lap, premium lap, insulated, and shake products come from one maker, so trim and accessories coordinate. Our general vinyl siding page covers the category, including other lines we install.
  • Versus fiber cement: fiber cement costs more and needs repainting eventually, though factory finishes stretch that interval. It is noncombustible, which can decide the question on fire-designated parcels.
  • Versus LP SmartSide: engineered wood gives a more authentic wood grain and takes paint, but it needs periodic repainting. CertainTeed trades some of that realism for close to zero finish upkeep.
  • Versus wood: real cedar or redwood looks the part on a period home but carries the most maintenance and combustibility.

Installing it the right way

Vinyl is unforgiving of shortcuts, and most vinyl complaints trace back to installation rather than the product. Our approach:

  • Tear-off, then inspection. We remove the old cladding down to the sheathing and substrate. That exposes the water-resistive barrier (WRB) and flashing so they can be inspected and corrected. Soft or rotted sheathing gets addressed before anything goes back on. Framing only comes into it if the sheathing itself has failed, and we'd walk you through that first.
  • A sound WRB and flashing. Vinyl is a rainscreen-style cladding, not a watertight skin. The barrier and flashing behind it, especially at windows, doors, and penetrations, do the real waterproofing.
  • Hung, not pinned. Panels expand and contract with temperature, which matters with Sonoma's summer swings. CertainTeed's instructions call for fastening that leaves the panel free to move, with proper clearance at trim and corners. Nailing panels tight is a common cause of buckling.
  • Coordinated windows. If windows are due too, doing both together lets the openings be flashed correctly once. See our Sonoma window replacement page.

Exterior work in the city is permitted through the City of Sonoma Building Division, which moved to the 2025 California Building Standards Code effective January 1, 2026. We handle the permit and confirm requirements for your address.

What drives the cost

We price from a walkthrough, not a web form. The main variables are:

  • Product line: Mainstreet, Monogram, insulated CedarBoards, and Cedar Impressions sit at different price points.
  • Wall area and complexity: gables, corners, and trim detail add labor.
  • Condition behind the old siding: sheathing or flashing repairs add scope.
  • Access: second stories and sloped lots take more setup.
  • Fire requirements: whether your parcel steers part of the wall to a different material.

FAQ

Can I use CertainTeed vinyl siding if my Sonoma parcel is in a fire-hazard zone? It depends. Vinyl is combustible. If your parcel carries a High or Very High designation on the City of Sonoma's updated map, Chapter 7A may govern the wall covering on the regulated parts of your project, which generally favors noncombustible or ignition-resistant materials. We verify your parcel and scope with the City before recommending a product.

Which CertainTeed line is right for my house? Mainstreet suits budget-focused ranch and mid-century re-sides. Monogram gives a heavier, more refined lap. CedarBoards adds a foam-backed insulated panel. Cedar Impressions covers the shake-and-shingle look. We'll compare samples on your actual walls.

Will vinyl hold up to Sonoma's summer heat? Generally yes, when it's installed with room to expand and colors are chosen with the exposure in mind. It never needs repainting. Very dark colors and walls facing strongly reflective surfaces deserve extra care, and we'll flag those during the walkthrough.

Do I need a permit? Re-siding in the city goes through the City of Sonoma Building Division. We handle the permit and confirm what your specific project requires.
