CertainTeed is a single manufacturer with several product families under one name. It makes traditional vinyl lap, insulated vinyl, shake- and shingle-style vinyl, and polymer shakes, and it has offered fiber cement as well. For a San Carlos homeowner, the useful question is which CertainTeed line fits your house, your budget, and your parcel. Bay Area Siding Company is a Larkspur-based siding and window contractor working across the Peninsula, and we install CertainTeed siding as part of a full re-side. That means we remove the old cladding to the sheathing, inspect and correct the water-resistive barrier and flashing, and then hang the new siding to CertainTeed's installation instructions.

Most people come to CertainTeed through vinyl, and they usually want three things:
The appeal of a brand lineup, compared with a generic vinyl, is consistency. You get trim, accessories, and matching profiles from one system, backed by manufacturer warranties that CertainTeed promotes as a selling point. Warranty terms differ by product line and depend on correct installation, so we review the current terms for the specific product you choose rather than quote a blanket figure here.
Monogram. This is CertainTeed's thicker, more rigid traditional vinyl lap. Choose it if you want vinyl that lies flatter on the wall and reads more like painted lap siding from the street.
Mainstreet. This is the more economical vinyl lap line. It suits rentals, secondary structures, or a straightforward refresh where cost leads the decision.
Cedar Impressions. These are vinyl shakes and shingles, with straight-edge, staggered, and half-round styles. They're often used as an accent on gables, bump-outs, or a front elevation, or across a whole house for a shingle look without the staining and upkeep of real cedar.
CedarBoards insulated vinyl. This is vinyl lap with a contoured foam backing, and it's where the former Craneboard insulated line now lives. The foam makes the panel stiffer and flatter, and it adds a modest bump in energy performance. We treat the energy gain as a secondary benefit, not the main reason to buy.
Polymer shakes. These are CertainTeed's heavier, more dimensional shake products, aimed at homeowners who want more shadow line and texture than standard vinyl shingles give.
Fiber cement (WeatherBoards). CertainTeed has marketed a fiber cement line. Availability of specific fiber cement products changes, so we confirm what's currently offered before building a spec around it. If fiber cement is what you want, compare it against our James Hardie and broader fiber cement options.
For a deeper look at the brand as a whole, see our CertainTeed siding hub.
We'd rather you choose CertainTeed for the right reasons. Keep these in mind:
San Carlos has a wide spread of housing eras. You'll find 1920s Craftsman bungalows in Howard Park and White Oaks, Mediterranean and Spanish Revival stucco from the 1920s and '30s, and post-war homes in Clearfield Park. CertainTeed's lap and shake profiles tend to sit most naturally on the simpler post-war and mid-century houses. Cedar Impressions shingles can work as a gable accent on a bungalow where the owner wants less maintenance.
The west side of town deserves a closer look. San Carlos isn't mapped as a Very High Fire Hazard Severity Zone. The 2025 state maps place local terrain in moderate and high categories. However, the city considers properties west of Alameda de las Pulgas to be high risk, and it has adopted fire-code provisions calling for fire-resistive materials in its high fire danger area. If your home sits up the hill toward Crestview, Devonshire, or the Alder Manor slopes, whether vinyl is appropriate depends on your parcel and how the work is classified. We confirm that with the City and the San Carlos and Redwood City Fire Department before recommending a product. On those parcels, the conversation often shifts toward noncombustible fiber cement. See the San Carlos James Hardie page for that side of the decision.
Permits. The City of San Carlos Building Division (600 Elm Street) treats siding replacement as permitted work under the current California Building Code, and we handle the filing. On stucco homes, if any stucco is cut and patched instead of fully removed, the city requires a lath inspection before the scratch coat goes on. We plan that hold point into the schedule.
We start at the house. We look at the existing walls, talk through which line suits the home, and check whether your parcel raises any fire-side questions. After measuring and writing a scope, we pull the permit.
On install days, the old siding comes off down to the sheathing so we can inspect the substrate. We look especially around windows and at the base of walls, where older San Carlos homes often hide moisture damage. Damaged sheathing gets repaired. The water-resistive barrier and flashing are then detailed at openings, penetrations, and corners. After that, CertainTeed's starter strips, channels, trim, and panels go up per the manufacturer's instructions. The job ends with cleanup and a walkthrough together.
If windows are also on your list, doing them in the same project lets the flashing tie together properly. See San Carlos window replacement.
We don't post prices, because the numbers depend on your walls. The main factors are:
For the broader re-side decision, including when replacement beats repair, see San Carlos siding replacement. You can also browse finished work in our project gallery and learn about our Peninsula service area.
Can I put CertainTeed vinyl on a home west of Alameda de las Pulgas? It depends on your specific parcel and the scope of work. The city treats that area as high risk and has fire-code provisions calling for fire-resistive materials in its high fire danger area. We confirm the requirements with the City of San Carlos and the fire department before recommending vinyl there. Often we'll show you a noncombustible alternative alongside it.
Is insulated CedarBoards worth it over standard vinyl? For many homeowners, yes, mainly because the foam backing makes the wall look flatter and feel more solid. The energy benefit is real but modest. Treat it as a bonus, not the main reason.
Will you install CertainTeed over my existing siding? We generally recommend a tear-off. Removing the old cladding lets us inspect the sheathing, water-resistive barrier, and flashing. Covering over hides those problems.
Do I need a permit for CertainTeed siding in San Carlos? Yes. The City of San Carlos Building Division treats siding replacement as permitted work, and we handle the permit as part of the job.
