• Mainstreet. A more budget-oriented vinyl lap line. It suits cost-sensitive projects such as outbuildings, rentals, and simpler elevations.
• Cedar Impressions. Vinyl shakes and shingles molded to read like cedar. They are often used on gables, dormers, or accent walls rather than a whole house.
• CedarBoards insulated vinyl. Vinyl with a contoured foam backing. The foam stiffens the panel so it lies flatter on the wall and adds a modest boost to the wall's thermal performance. Honest fit: where CertainTeed vinyl works in St. Helena, and where it doesn't

Heat and sun

St. Helena summers are hot and bright, and the upvalley gets serious afternoon sun on west- and south-facing walls.

Vinyl handles ordinary valley heat, but it has two real limits:

• Extreme heat. It expands and contracts more than cement or wood. Under extreme heat it can distort, especially if it was nailed too tight.

This is the most important caveat for St. Helena. The 2020 Glass Fire burned into the St. Helena area. Cal Fire's 2025 Local Responsibility Area maps also newly designated parts of the upvalley as elevated fire hazard, including sections between St. Helena and Calistoga.

Vinyl is a combustible cladding. On a parcel carrying a fire-hazard designation, California's wildland-urban interface provisions (Chapter 7A) can govern exterior wall coverings. Whether and how they apply depends on your parcel, the product, and the scope of work.

If your home is in or near a designated area, we confirm the requirements with the City of St. Helena before recommending anything. What the install involves

A CertainTeed job runs like any serious re-side:

1. Remove the old cladding. Tear-off exposes the sheathing or substrate, the water-resistive barrier, and the flashing, not the framing.
2. Inspect and repair. We check for concealed rot and correct the weather barrier. We re-flash windows, doors, and transitions.
3. Install the new siding. Panels go up to CertainTeed's installation instructions. With vinyl, that means allowing for expansion at every fastener and trim piece.
