CertainTeed is one of the largest names in residential siding. For a Vallejo homeowner, the appeal is range under one brand: standard vinyl lap, insulated vinyl, and polymer shake and shingle profiles. You can match a wall to the house and the budget without mixing manufacturers. Bay Area Siding Company installs CertainTeed siding across Vallejo and the rest of Solano County. We'll tell you plainly where it's a strong fit and where another material will serve your house better.

What you're actually choosing between

"CertainTeed siding" covers several different products, and the right one depends on the look you want and how much you want to spend. Here's how the main lines break down:

  • Monogram is CertainTeed's heavier-gauge vinyl lap line. It's a common pick for homeowners who want vinyl's low upkeep without the thin, wavy look cheaper panels can have on a long wall.
  • Mainstreet is the more economical vinyl line. It suits rentals, garages, additions, and homes where cost matters most.
  • Cedar Impressions is a polymer line molded to look like cedar shakes and shingles. It's often used on gables, dormers, and accent walls, or across a whole house for a shingle-style look without real wood.
  • CedarBoards insulated siding pairs vinyl with a contoured foam backing. The foam makes the panel stiffer against the wall and adds some insulating value. The older Craneboard insulated line now sits within this part of CertainTeed's lineup.
  • Fiber cement. CertainTeed has marketed fiber cement under the WeatherBoards name. Manufacturer lineups change, so we confirm current availability before quoting it. If fiber cement is the direction you're leaning, our fiber cement overview and James Hardie page cover that category in depth.

Where CertainTeed fits in Vallejo, and where it doesn't

Vallejo's housing is unusually mixed. It ranges from Italianate and Queen Anne Victorians and early-1900s bungalows near the older core to postwar and later tract neighborhoods farther out. That mix largely decides whether a CertainTeed product makes sense.

Postwar and later homes. On many ranch houses, mid-century homes, and tract houses, vinyl is a practical upgrade over tired hardboard, aluminum, or T1-11 that needs painting every few years. Monogram or CedarBoards can give those houses a clean, uniform wall that never needs repainting. Cedar Impressions can add some texture at the gables.

Homes in a historic district. Vallejo has designated historic districts, including the Architectural Heritage District and St. Vincent's Hill, plus individually listed landmarks. Exterior changes on those properties can require a Certificate of Appropriateness from the Planning Division before a permit is issued. The review procedures are in Vallejo Municipal Code section 16.614.09.

Siding profile and material can be part of that review. Swapping original wood clapboard on a Victorian for vinyl may not be approvable, and it may not be the right call for the house even where it is. If your home is in a district, we'll say so early. We'll also point you toward options more likely to pass review, such as wood, fiber cement, or LP SmartSide. That beats speccing a product you'd have to walk back.

Honest strengths and trade-offs

What CertainTeed vinyl does well

  • No repainting. The color runs through the panel, so there's no paint film to blister or peel.
  • Lower cost than fiber cement or wood on most projects, with lighter panels that go up faster.
  • Broad selection of colors, lap profiles, and shake textures within one brand, which keeps trim and accessories consistent.
  • Strong manufacturer warranties. CertainTeed backs its siding with limited warranties. Coverage varies by product line, so we walk through the specific terms for the product you choose.

Where to be realistic

  • Look. Even premium vinyl reads differently than painted wood or fiber cement up close. On a period home, that difference matters.
  • Dark colors and heat. Very dark shades can be limited on some lines. Any vinyl can distort from concentrated heat, such as reflected sunlight off certain windows or a grill parked too close to the wall.
  • Fire. Vinyl is not a noncombustible cladding. Most of Vallejo's built-up neighborhoods are not in a high fire hazard severity zone. However, some parcels along the city's northern and eastern hill edges can be, and Cal Fire has recently updated its zone maps. If your lot is on that fringe, we confirm the designation for your address and discuss what California's wildland-urban interface provisions (CBC Chapter 7A) may require. Those rules apply to specific assemblies and depend on the parcel and the scope of work, so we verify with the building department rather than assume. In a designated zone, fiber cement is often the simpler path.

Bay wind and the details that matter

Vallejo sits where San Pablo Bay narrows into the Carquinez Strait. Homes near the waterfront and on exposed rises see steady marine wind and salt air. That doesn't rule out vinyl. It does put the emphasis on installation:

  • The panels need to be locked and fastened per the manufacturer's instructions so they stay put in gusts.
  • Fasteners should hold up to a moist, salty environment.
  • Flashing at windows, doors, and wall transitions has to be done properly, because that is where wind-driven rain actually gets in.

Vinyl is designed to shed water at its face, but the wall behind it still relies on a sound water-resistive barrier and flashing. That's why the installation matters as much as the brand.

How a CertainTeed re-side goes

The job starts with measuring, confirming the product line and color, and checking whether a historic-district review or fire-zone question applies to your address. We confirm permit requirements for your scope with the City of Vallejo.

Once work begins, we remove the old siding down to the sheathing and substrate. That lets us inspect the water-resistive barrier and flashing and repair damaged sheathing where the tear-off reveals it. We then install new WRB and flashing as needed and hang the CertainTeed panels, trim, and accessories to the manufacturer's installation instructions. We finish with a walk-around with you. If the tear-off turns up something bigger, such as sheathing that has failed and needs replacing, we show you and discuss it before the scope changes.

What drives the price

We don't post prices, because the numbers depend on your house. The main cost drivers are:

  • which line you choose (Mainstreet, Monogram, CedarBoards insulated, or Cedar Impressions accents)
  • wall area and number of stories
  • how much concealed damage the tear-off uncovers
  • the amount of trim, corners, and openings
  • access on tight lots
  • whether historic-district review or fire-zone requirements come into play

A measured walk-through turns those variables into a real number.

Frequently asked questions

Can I put CertainTeed vinyl on a house in one of Vallejo's historic districts? It depends on the property and the review. Homes in districts like the Architectural Heritage District or St. Vincent's Hill, and designated landmarks, can need a Certificate of Appropriateness for exterior changes (VMC 16.614.09). Siding material and profile may be considered in that review. We'll flag this at the start and suggest options likely to be approved.

Is insulated vinyl worth it over standard vinyl? For many homeowners, yes. The foam backing on CedarBoards makes the panel stiffer and flatter on the wall and adds some insulating value. Whether the added cost pays off depends on your house and goals, and we'll lay out the difference side by side.

Will vinyl hold up to the wind near the Carquinez Strait? Properly installed, yes. Wind performance comes down to correct panel locking, fastening, and flashing to the manufacturer's instructions, which is where we focus on exposed Vallejo lots.

Do you only install CertainTeed? No. We install CertainTeed along with James Hardie and other fiber cement, LP SmartSide, wood, and other vinyl brands. We recommend what suits the house.
