Start here: where your parcel sits

Most of CertainTeed's residential lineup is vinyl or polymer, and those are combustible materials. That matters in Scotts Valley more than in many flatland towns. The 2020 CZU Lightning Complex burned across the Santa Cruz Mountains and brought evacuations into the city and its outlying parcels. Many mountain lots in and around Scotts Valley carry elevated fire-hazard designations.

Where California Building Code Chapter 7A applies, it governs exterior wall coverings on specific regulated assemblies. It generally calls for:

• noncombustible or ignition-resistant materials, or
• assemblies that meet specified fire-test standards.

A typical vinyl or polymer panel is usually not the straightforward fit for a regulated wall. Whether 7A reaches your project depends on your parcel's designation and the scope of work. We confirm that with the City of Scotts Valley Building Department and Cal Fire's hazard mapping before you choose a product.

Two outcomes are common:

The CertainTeed lineup, in plain terms

Monogram

Monogram is CertainTeed's heavier-gauge vinyl lap. It is the line to look at if you want vinyl without the thin, wavy look that gave vinyl a bad name. Monogram offers a wider range of profiles and colors than entry-level lines. On a two-story Scotts Valley home with long, straight wall runs, the stiffer panel helps the walls read flat.

Mainstreet

Mainstreet is the more budget-conscious vinyl lap. It suits rentals, accessory structures, garages, or a whole house where cost is the main concern. Profile and color choices are narrower than Monogram's. The low-maintenance benefit is the same: nothing to repaint.

Cedar Impressions

Cedar Impressions panels reproduce the look of cedar shingles and shakes: straight-edge, staggered, rough-split, and similar styles. Plenty of Scotts Valley homes lean rustic, with a woodsy setting and board or shingle accents. This line can keep that look on a gable or a full elevation without the recurring stain that real shingles need under redwood shade.

CedarBoards insulated siding

CedarBoards is vinyl with a contoured foam backing bonded to the panel. The foam makes the siding more rigid and more resistant to dents. It also adds some insulating value across the wall. The former Craneboard insulated line now sits within CertainTeed's insulated offerings. If you've seen Craneboard mentioned, this is the current conversation.

On a shaded lot where branches drop and walls stay cool, the added rigidity is a real benefit. That said, foam-backed siding is not a substitute for a properly detailed WRB.

Polymer shakes

Polymer shakes are thicker, molded shake products for a more dimensional, premium look than standard vinyl shingle panels. They cost more. They carry the same fire-zone caveats as the rest of the vinyl family.

Fiber cement

CertainTeed has marketed fiber cement siding under the WeatherBoards name. Availability of manufacturers' fiber-cement lines changes over time. Vinyl on a damp, shaded lot: what to know

Scotts Valley's everyday climate is redwood shade, cool damp air, and long wet winters. That shapes how any vinyl install should be done.

Vinyl doesn't rot, but the wall behind it can. Vinyl siding hangs loosely on its fasteners so it can expand and contract, and some water will get behind it. It is designed to drain that water out. The real protection comes from the layers underneath:

• the water-resistive barrier (WRB)
• flashing at windows, doors, deck ledgers, and roof-to-wall transitions

When we tear off old siding, we remove it to the sheathing and substrate. That exposes the WRB and flashing for inspection, so we're not going "down to the studs." We repair damaged sheathing and install a current WRB, then flash every opening before the first CertainTeed panel goes up. Framing only enters the picture if the sheathing itself has failed. We'll tell you if we find that.

Surface mildew still happens. On north- and west-facing walls that rarely see sun, vinyl can collect mildew and tree debris. A periodic wash handles it. You won't face the paint failure that shaded wood siding goes through. Keeping gutters clear and trimming branches back from the wall helps any cladding.

Covering over old siding is usually a mistake here. Many Scotts Valley homes from the 1970s and '80s have aging T1-11, hardboard, or wood lap. Hanging vinyl over those materials traps whatever moisture problem is already there. A tear-off costs more up front, but it's the version of this job that holds up.
