Polymer shakes and fiber cement

Valley heat is the design constraint, and installation is where it's handled

Stockton summers bring long runs of triple-digit days, intense UV, and dry afternoon winds off the Delta. Vinyl siding expands and contracts noticeably with temperature. How well CertainTeed siding holds up here depends less on the brand name and more on whether it was installed according to the manufacturer's instructions:

• Hung, not pinned. Vinyl panels are fastened so they can slide horizontally as they expand. Nailing them tight is a common cause of buckling and rippling on sunny south and west walls.

What's behind the new siding matters as much as the panels

We don't install CertainTeed over failing siding. On a typical Stockton job, we remove the existing siding to the sheathing/substrate. Vinyl is designed with the expectation that some water will get behind it, so a working barrier and proper flashing underneath are essential.
