CertainTeed is less a single siding product than a full lineup. It includes traditional vinyl lap, foam-backed insulated panels, and shake and shingle profiles. Depending on current availability, it also includes fiber cement. For a Santa Clara homeowner replacing tired original cladding on a postwar ranch, that range is the main appeal. You can stay with one manufacturer and still choose between a budget-conscious lap siding, a stiffer insulated board, or a shake accent that adds texture to a flat facade.

Bay Area Siding Company is a Larkspur-based contractor, and we install CertainTeed siding throughout the South Bay. This page explains how the lines differ, where they make sense on Santa Clara's housing stock, and where another material might serve you better.

The CertainTeed lineup, line by line

Choosing CertainTeed usually means choosing which CertainTeed line. Here is how the main families break down.

Standard vinyl lap: Monogram and Mainstreet. These are the core horizontal vinyl lines. Mainstreet is generally the more economical choice. Monogram sits a step up in thickness, profile options, and colors. Both are aimed at homeowners who want to stop repainting. Vinyl color runs through the material, so there is no finish coat to peel. That is a real change for anyone who has repainted swelling hardboard or T1-11 every few summers.

Insulated vinyl: CedarBoards. CedarBoards bonds a contoured foam backing to the vinyl panel. This line now also covers what used to be sold as Craneboard. The foam makes the panel stiffer, so long runs of wall look flatter and less wavy. It also adds some thermal and impact benefit over hollow-back vinyl. Insulated vinyl is not a substitute for proper wall insulation. It is a meaningful upgrade in feel and appearance on a single-story home with long, uninterrupted elevations, which describes many Santa Clara ranches.

Shakes and shingles: Cedar Impressions. These are polymer panels molded to look like cedar shake or shingle. On a Santa Clara home, they rarely cover the whole house. They more often appear as an accent, such as a gable end, a bump-out, or the band above a garage door, to break up a plain tract facade without the upkeep of real cedar.

Fiber cement: WeatherBoards. CertainTeed has also offered fiber cement under the WeatherBoards name. Manufacturer lineups change, so we confirm current availability before quoting it. If fiber cement is where you are leaning, compare it on our fiber cement category page and our Santa Clara James Hardie page. You will get a fuller picture there than from a single brand.

The brand overview lives on our CertainTeed hub. The broader vinyl category, including other manufacturers, is on the vinyl siding hub.

Why CertainTeed fits a lot of Santa Clara houses

Santa Clara's residential neighborhoods grew mostly in the 1950s and 60s. Much of the housing is single-story ranch and tract construction, and many homes still carry original plywood panel, hardboard, or early lap siding. Those homes have simple rooflines, long horizontal walls, and modest trim. Clean horizontal lap siding suits that architecture well, and CertainTeed's vinyl lines do it at a lower cost than most alternatives.

A few honest reasons homeowners here pick it:

  • Budget. Vinyl is generally the most affordable way to re-side, which matters when you are covering every elevation of a house.
  • No repainting cycle. For owners who have been re-coating failing panel siding, eliminating paint is often the deciding factor.
  • Mixing profiles under one brand. Lap on the main walls and shakes on the gables, with coordinated colors, is easy to design within the CertainTeed family.
  • Fire rules usually don't steer the choice. The developed valley floor where most of Santa Clara sits isn't within a mapped fire hazard severity zone. That means noncombustible-cladding requirements generally aren't what drives material selection here the way they do on foothill parcels. We still confirm your specific parcel before speccing rather than assume.

Trade-offs to weigh before you commit

Vinyl is a strong value, but it is not the right answer for every house or every owner.

Heat and sun. Santa Clara summers are long, dry, and bright. Vinyl can fade over time and can distort under intense heat. One known cause is concentrated sunlight reflected off nearby glass. We look at orientation and surroundings during the walkthrough and talk through color choices with that in mind. Lighter and mid-tone colors are the conventional safer choice for sun-exposed walls, and some lines limit very dark colors.

Look. Even the better CertainTeed profiles read differently from painted fiber cement or real wood up close. If a crisp painted finish matters to you, compare James Hardie or LP SmartSide. LP SmartSide is engineered wood, which gives a warmer grain and holds paint.

Combustibility. Vinyl is not a noncombustible cladding. On a typical valley-floor lot this usually isn't a code issue. It is still a factor worth understanding, and it is one reason fiber cement appeals to some owners even where it isn't required.

If those trade-offs point you elsewhere, that is a good outcome. Our Santa Clara siding replacement page compares all the materials we install side by side.

Installing it right: what happens under the panels

Vinyl siding is a rain screen, not a waterproof skin. It sheds most water, but some always gets behind it. That makes what sits underneath more important than the panel itself.

On a proper re-side, we remove the old cladding to the sheathing or substrate. That exposes the water-resistive barrier (WRB) and the flashing around windows, doors, and penetrations. On homes of Santa Clara's vintage, a continuous WRB and modern flashing details often weren't standard. This is the moment to repair soft sheathing, install a correct drainage layer, and flash openings in the right sequence. Framing only comes into play if the sheathing itself has failed, which is a larger scope we would flag before proceeding.

Vinyl also has installation rules of its own. Panels expand and contract with temperature, so they are hung loosely on their fasteners rather than nailed tight, with room left at trim and corners. Skipping that step is a common reason vinyl buckles in hot weather. We install to CertainTeed's published instructions, which also matters for keeping manufacturer warranty coverage intact.

Permits and timeline

Siding replacement in Santa Clara is permitted through the City of Santa Clara Building Division. We pull the permit and confirm whether your scope qualifies for a simpler over-the-counter path or needs fuller review. That depends on the extent of the work.

From there, the job follows a predictable path:

  1. Walkthrough and line selection. We look at the house and choose a line and colors, using physical samples when possible.
  2. Measure and scope. We take measurements and write the scope.
  3. Permit. We handle the submittal with the Building Division.
  4. Tear-off and envelope work. We remove the old siding, then inspect and repair the sheathing, WRB, and flashing.
  5. Installation. We install panels, trim, and accessories.
  6. Cleanup and walkthrough. We clean the site and review the finished work with you.

If your windows are also original single-pane units, doing them in the same project lets the window flashing tie cleanly into the new WRB. See Santa Clara window replacement.

What drives the cost

We price after seeing the house, not online. The main drivers are:

  • Which line you choose. Mainstreet, Monogram, and insulated CedarBoards sit at different price points, and Cedar Impressions accents add cost.
  • Size and complexity. Total wall area and the number of corners and openings both matter.
  • Hidden repairs. Sheathing and flashing repair uncovered at tear-off can add scope.
  • Trim. Trim, soffit, and fascia work adds to the total.
  • Combined work. Replacing windows in the same project affects the overall price.

CertainTeed backs its siding lines with manufacturer warranties, and terms vary by product. We walk through the current written warranty for the specific line you choose rather than summarize it from memory.

FAQ

Is CertainTeed vinyl a good choice for Santa Clara's hot summers? It can be, with the right color and installation. Choosing lighter or mid-tone colors on sun-exposed walls, and hanging panels so they can expand freely, addresses most heat-related problems. We also check for reflected glare from neighboring windows during the walkthrough.

What's the difference between CertainTeed Monogram and CedarBoards? Monogram is a standard hollow-back vinyl lap siding. CedarBoards adds a foam backing that makes the panel stiffer and flatter-looking, with some added thermal and impact benefit. CedarBoards costs more, but many owners prefer how it looks on long ranch walls.

Can CertainTeed go over my existing T1-11 or hardboard? We don't recommend covering over failing panel siding. Removing it is the only way to inspect and repair the sheathing, WRB, and flashing underneath. Covering over can trap moisture that is already causing damage.

Do I need a permit for CertainTeed siding in Santa Clara? Yes. Re-siding goes through the City of Santa Clara Building Division. We handle the permit and confirm the review path for your scope.
