CertainTeed is one of the larger siding manufacturers in North America. Its main advantage for a San Rafael homeowner is range. Under one brand you'll find entry-level vinyl lap, thicker premium vinyl, foam-backed insulated panels, and shake- and shingle-style products. That breadth suits a city where a Terra Linda ranch, a Gerstle Park cottage, and a hillside home above downtown might all be on the same short list of projects.

Bay Area Siding Company installs CertainTeed siding from our base in Larkspur, a few minutes down the 101. We'll help you work out which CertainTeed line, if any, fits your house, your budget, and your parcel.

Talk through a CertainTeed project: call (415) 619-5167 or request a bid.

The CertainTeed lineup, in plain terms

CertainTeed is best understood as a family of products at different price and performance tiers, not a single siding. Here are the lines San Rafael homeowners most often ask about:

  • Mainstreet: CertainTeed's value-oriented vinyl lap siding. It's a practical choice for rentals, secondary structures, or a primary home where budget leads the decision and a clean, painted-look lap profile is enough.
  • Monogram: a heavier, more rigid vinyl line. It lies flatter on the wall and reads more like finished wood lap from the street. Choose it if you want vinyl's low upkeep without the thin look some people associate with the material.
  • Cedar Impressions: vinyl shakes and shingles that recreate the texture of cedar. They're popular for gables, accent walls, and cottage-style or Craftsman-leaning homes.
  • CedarBoards insulated siding: vinyl with a contoured foam backing. The foam adds rigidity and helps the panel resist dents and waviness. The former CraneBoard insulated line has been consolidated into this category.
  • Polymer shakes: molded shake products for homeowners who want a textured, shingled look with a different feel from standard vinyl.
  • WeatherBoards fiber cement: CertainTeed has also marketed fiber cement under this name. Availability of fiber cement lines changes, so we confirm what's currently offered before we put it in a proposal.

Warranty coverage is a real selling point across CertainTeed's lineup, but terms differ by product and finish. We review the specific warranty document for the line you choose with you rather than quoting a blanket figure.

Where CertainTeed makes sense in San Rafael, and where it doesn't

San Rafael's housing stock covers a lot of ground, so the honest answer depends on the house.

Good fits. Post-war and mid-century homes that still carry tired wood lap, aluminum, or T1-11 are good candidates, especially when the owner wants to stop repainting. The same goes for rental properties and in-law units where durability per dollar matters. Traditional cottages and bungalows can also work well, since a Monogram lap body with Cedar Impressions in the gables can look right at home.

Harder fits. Terra Linda's Eichlers and similar modernist homes were designed around vertical grooved panels, clean planes, and minimal trim. Most CertainTeed vinyl is horizontal lap or shake. It can be detailed carefully, but if preserving that mid-century line is the priority, compare it against panel options in fiber cement or LP SmartSide before deciding.

Parcels in a mapped fire zone. Much of San Rafael's wooded and hillside terrain sits inside the City's Wildland-Urban Interface boundaries, which the 2025 state Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps largely mirror. Where California's Chapter 7A standards apply to exterior wall coverings, vinyl is generally not the simplest path to compliance. Requirements depend on the parcel, the specific product, and the project scope. We check your address and confirm with the City of San Rafael Building Division before recommending anything. If your home is in a designated zone, noncombustible fiber cement, including James Hardie, is often the more straightforward conversation.

Vinyl's real trade-offs

CertainTeed vinyl is a good product, but it's still vinyl, and you should know the limits before committing.

  • Heat and reflected light. Vinyl can distort under intense heat, including sunlight concentrated off a neighbor's Low-E window or placed too close to a grill. On San Rafael's warmer inland-facing exposures, color choice and panel thickness both matter.
  • Color is built into the material. You don't repaint vinyl, which is the point, but that also means the color you pick is the color you keep. The deepest colors aren't available on every line.
  • Look. Premium lines close most of the gap, but up close vinyl doesn't read like painted wood or fiber cement. Some homeowners don't mind. Others do.
  • Repairs. Damaged panels can usually be swapped out, but matching an older color years later can be tricky. Keeping a few spare pieces from the original install helps.

If these trade-offs rule vinyl out, our vinyl siding overview and the Bay Area CertainTeed page compare it against the alternatives in more depth.

How a CertainTeed installation goes

A CertainTeed job follows the same fundamentals as any quality re-side. The old cladding comes off, removed to the sheathing so we can inspect the substrate, the water-resistive barrier, and the flashing around windows, doors, and penetrations. Any damaged sheathing gets repaired, and the WRB and flashing are corrected before new siding goes on.

Vinyl then goes up per CertainTeed's installation instructions. Installers leave panels room to expand and contract, nail them so they can move, and set trim and accessories to the correct clearances. Most wavy, buckled vinyl you see around the Bay Area comes from shortcuts at this step, not from a flaw in the product.

Permitting runs through the City of San Rafael, and a full siding replacement generally requires a building permit. We handle that process, including any wildfire-zone review tied to your parcel. If you're also planning new windows, it usually pays to do them in the same project so the flashing is integrated once. Our San Rafael window replacement page covers that side.

What moves the cost of a CertainTeed project

We don't publish prices, because the spread between CertainTeed jobs is wide. The main drivers are:

  • Line and tier. Mainstreet, Monogram, and insulated CedarBoards sit at noticeably different price points, and shake products add more.
  • Trim, soffit, and accessories. Corner posts, window surrounds, J-channel, and matching soffit add up quickly on homes with many openings.
  • What's under the old siding. Sheathing repair and WRB replacement are the big unknowns until tear-off.
  • Height and access. Hillside lots, two-story walls, and tight side yards all add labor.
  • Permit and code scope. Fire-zone requirements can change which products are even on the table.

A local crew, close by

We're a Marin company working out of Larkspur, so San Rafael is one of the closest markets we serve. That proximity means site visits that fit your schedule and a crew already familiar with the City's permit process. We can also compare CertainTeed side by side with every other material we install, so the recommendation comes from your house rather than a single product we need to sell. More on our local coverage is on the Marin service area page.

Frequently asked questions

Can I use CertainTeed vinyl siding if my San Rafael home is in a fire hazard zone? It depends on your parcel and on which Chapter 7A requirements apply to your exterior walls. Vinyl is generally a harder fit in mapped WUI areas. We check your address and confirm with the City of San Rafael Building Division, and where vinyl isn't practical we'll walk you through noncombustible options.

Is CertainTeed insulated siding worth the extra cost? For many homes, yes. The foam backing makes panels stiffer, straighter, and more dent-resistant, and it adds a layer to the wall. How much it helps comfort depends on the rest of the wall assembly, so we'll give you a realistic picture rather than a promised number.

Will CertainTeed work on my Terra Linda Eichler? It can be installed, but most CertainTeed vinyl is horizontal lap or shake, which departs from the vertical-panel look Eichlers are known for. If preserving the original design matters, we'll show you panel-style alternatives alongside it.

Which CertainTeed line should I choose? Budget-driven projects often land on Mainstreet. Homeowners who want vinyl that looks more substantial tend to choose Monogram or CedarBoards insulated siding. Cedar Impressions is usually an accent. We'll narrow it down during the site visit.
