Why Marvin, and for which Fairfax homes

Marvin's sweet spot is the ambitious project. Fairfax has plenty of them — homes perched on the wooded hillsides where the whole reason to replace a window is to open up a view, and remodels where the windows carry the design. Fiberglass deserves a word because it's genuinely well-suited to Fairfax. It expands and contracts very little with temperature, so frames stay tight and true through the canyon's damp-cold-to-dry-warm swings; it's strong enough for large openings without bulky frames; and it takes a durable finish. Energy and comfort. The town's older homes largely still run original single-pane glass, and in a foggy, shaded canyon that means cold, condensation-prone rooms. Marvin's dual-pane, Low-E units — specified to meet Title 24 in effect at permit time — turn that around.

Fire-zone glazing. Much of Fairfax sits in a Fire Hazard Severity Zone or WUI area, and the Town has adopted the California WUI Code (municipal code § 8.06.011). Where those rules and Chapter 7A apply, replacement glazing generally has to be dual-pane with at least one tempered pane (or a rated assembly) — usually triggered when you permit a replacement or alter an opening, not as a forced retrofit. That's especially relevant with Marvin's large view windows, where tempered glass is often required anyway for safety glazing. Where Marvin fits among the brands

Marvin is a premium brand, closest in tier to Andersen (composite Fibrex and clad-wood) and Pella (wood, fiberglass, and vinyl across a wide range). Marvin's distinguishing strengths are its fiberglass engineering, large-size capability, and design flexibility for custom work. If value on a straightforward vinyl retrofit is the goal, Milgard and Anlin are the West-Coast workhorses at a lower price. Install and cost

For large openings and custom work, precise measurement and correct flashing are everything — an oversized view window on a shaded wall is exactly where water intrusion shows up if the install is sloppy. We do both retrofit (insert) and new-construction installs, and on ambitious projects the new-construction approach — stripping back to the framing so the flashing is fully renewed — is often the right call. We measure, confirm glazing against Title 24 and any fire-zone tempering, pull the Fairfax permit, set the windows level and plumb, flash and air-seal, and finish with trim and a check.
