People who ask for Andersen by name usually already know what they want: a recognized national brand, a frame that isn't plain vinyl, and a window that will look right for decades. In Valley Springs, that choice also has to hold up to long, triple-digit summer afternoons on the south and west sides of the house. On many parcels in the lower Calaveras foothills, the glass also plays a part in fire resistance.

Bay Area Siding Company is a Larkspur-based (Marin) window and siding contractor that works Calaveras County and the Sierra foothills. We install Andersen windows. We help you pick the right series and glass package for your home, handle the County permit, and install each unit with proper flashing and air-sealing. This includes subdivision homes in Rancho Calaveras and La Contenta as well as older ranch properties off Highways 12 and 26.

What sets Andersen apart: Fibrex and clad wood

Andersen's main difference from vinyl-first brands is Fibrex, a composite of wood fiber and thermoplastic polymer. Andersen positions it as stiffer and more stable than standard vinyl. The company also markets it for its range of exterior colors, including darker finishes that some all-vinyl lines limit.

That matters here. A Valley Springs summer puts a lot of sun on a west-facing frame, and a stable frame material pairs well with the right glass. Frame choice is only half the story, though. In this climate, the glass package does most of the work on heat gain, as covered below.

Andersen's lineup spans a wide range, so the series you choose shapes both cost and look:

  • 100 Series. Built from Fibrex throughout. This is Andersen's entry point for homeowners who want composite rather than vinyl. It is often a good match for the 1970s-onward subdivision homes common in Rancho Calaveras and La Contenta, where clean lines and low upkeep matter more than a wood interior.
  • 400 Series. Wood interior with a low-maintenance exterior cladding, so the outside doesn't need painting. It is a long-running line with many styles and sizes. It suits owners who want warm wood inside a family room or kitchen that looks out over oak woodland.
  • A-Series. Andersen's higher-end, design-focused line. It pairs wood interiors with durable exterior materials and offers more architectural options. It makes sense on a custom foothill home or a remodel where the windows are a central design element.

Andersen also offers other wood and clad-wood configurations beyond these three. We walk through the options that fit your openings rather than steering everyone into one series.

A note on "Renewal by Andersen." You may have seen that name advertised. It is Andersen's separate direct-to-homeowner replacement business. When we install Andersen, we are installing Andersen-branded product lines through our own process. We are not part of that program.

Getting the glass right for foothill heat

The most important performance decision on a Valley Springs window is the solar heat gain coefficient (SHGC). This number describes how much of the sun's heat passes through the glass.

A dual-pane insulated unit with a Low-E coating tuned for hot climates blocks much of that heat while keeping rooms bright. Andersen offers several Low-E glass options across its series. We match the package to each elevation and give the west and south openings, which take the afternoon sun, the most attention.

California's Title 24 energy code sets maximum U-factor and SHGC values for replacement windows. The required figures depend on the climate zone and the code cycle in effect, so we don't quote numbers that may be outdated. We confirm the current requirement when the permit is pulled and specify the Andersen glass to meet it.

Fire-zone parcels: where Andersen fits and where to be careful

This is real fire country. Calaveras County lived through the 2015 Butte Fire, much of the county is State Responsibility Area with mapped fire hazard severity zones, and Cal Fire refreshed those maps in 2025.

Where a parcel carries a designation, California Building Code Chapter 7A can govern exterior glazing on the openings it regulates. The common requirement is multi-paned glazing with at least one tempered pane, along with other assembly rules. It doesn't apply identically to every home or every job. It depends on the parcel's designation and on how the scope of work is classified.

Andersen offers tempered glass options. Whether a specific Andersen configuration satisfies the rule on your parcel is something we confirm with the Calaveras County Building Division before anything is ordered. It is not a blanket promise. If your home also needs attention on the walls, our Valley Springs siding replacement page covers how cladding fits into the same fire and heat picture.

Andersen vs. the other brands we install

Andersen isn't the right answer for every home. Here is how it compares:

  • Against Anlin or Milgard vinyl: Andersen generally costs more. What you get is Fibrex or clad wood instead of vinyl, plus more exterior color and interior finish options. If budget and energy performance are the main goals, a quality vinyl line may serve you just as well.
  • Against Marvin: Both play at the premium end. Marvin leans harder into fiberglass and custom architectural work, while Andersen's range runs from the composite 100 Series up to A-Series.
  • Against Pella: Another national brand with a wide range. Comparing specific series side by side for your openings is the practical way to decide.

For the bigger picture, including frame materials and retrofit versus full-frame, start at our window replacement hub or the Valley Springs window replacement page. The Andersen hub goes deeper on the brand itself.

How an Andersen install goes with us

  1. Walkthrough. We look at each opening and talk through your goals: heat control, looks, budget, and any fire designation.
  2. Measurement and selection. We recommend a series and glass package, then measure precisely.
  3. Install method. We decide between a retrofit (insert) install, which keeps the existing frame and is quicker and less invasive, and a new-construction (full-frame) install. A full-frame install removes the window to the rough opening so flashing can be fully renewed. It is the better choice where we find rot or water intrusion.
  4. Permit. We file with the County, including the Title 24 fenestration compliance form.
  5. Installation. Each unit goes in level and plumb, then gets flashed and air-sealed against winter rain and the summer temperature swing.
  6. Finish. We complete trim, check operation, and clean up with you.

Andersen lead times vary by series and options, so we build ordering into the schedule from the start.

Permitting in unincorporated Valley Springs

Valley Springs has no city government. It's an unincorporated community, so window replacement is permitted through the Calaveras County Building Division, whose offices are in the county seat of San Andreas. The review works from the current California Building Code and state Energy Code. We prepare the submittal and confirm both the energy target and any parcel-specific glazing requirement before placing the Andersen order.

What drives the cost

We don't post prices, because every house differs. The main cost drivers are:

  • Series: 100 Series vs. 400 Series vs. A-Series
  • Openings: how many, and their sizes and operating styles
  • Glass and finish: the Low-E package, interior finish, and exterior color
  • Tempered glass: whether fire-zone glazing is required
  • Install method: retrofit vs. full-frame
  • Repairs: rot or damage discovered at the openings
  • Access: second-story or widely spread openings on a rural property take more setup

FAQ

Is Andersen worth the extra cost over vinyl for a Valley Springs home? It depends on your priorities. Andersen's Fibrex and clad-wood frames offer more color, finish, and style options, and Andersen positions Fibrex as more stable than standard vinyl. In our summer heat, though, the low-SHGC glass package matters as much as the frame. A well-specified vinyl window can perform well too, so we're happy to price both.

Can Andersen windows meet fire-zone glazing rules on my parcel? Andersen offers tempered glass options. Whether a particular configuration satisfies Chapter 7A depends on your parcel's designation and the scope of work. We confirm that with the Calaveras County Building Division before ordering.

Do I need a permit to install Andersen windows in Valley Springs? Yes. Because Valley Springs is unincorporated, the permit runs through the Calaveras County Building Division, and a Title 24 energy form is part of the submittal. We handle it.

Are you part of Renewal by Andersen? No. Renewal by Andersen is Andersen's own separate replacement business. We are an independent contractor, and we install Andersen-branded windows.
