Andersen is one of the most recognized names in American windows. Homeowners usually come to it for two reasons: Fibrex, its proprietary composite frame material, and a lineup that runs from a practical composite series up to wood-interior windows for architectural work. Bay Area Siding Company installs Andersen windows in San Leandro. That includes the original wood double-hungs in downtown and Broadmoor bungalows, the aluminum sliders in the postwar ranch tracts, and larger openings on homes above Bay-O-Vista. We're a Larkspur-based siding and window contractor working across the East Bay. We handle series selection, field measuring, permitting, installation, and the final walkthrough.

What sets Andersen apart: Fibrex and a tiered lineup

Most replacement-window shopping comes down to frame material, and Andersen's distinctive answer is Fibrex. It is a composite of reclaimed wood fiber and thermoplastic polymer. Andersen positions it as a middle path between vinyl and wood: a frame with more rigidity than typical vinyl and none of the painting or rot concerns of bare exterior wood. How much of Fibrex's claimed advantage you'll notice depends on the window size, style, and installation. We'll walk through that honestly rather than oversell it.

The series we most often discuss with San Leandro homeowners:

  • 100 Series. This is Andersen's full-Fibrex line. It's the most accessible way into the brand, and it suits the many San Leandro homes still carrying single-pane aluminum sliders from the 1950s and '60s. You get clean sightlines and a low-maintenance frame at a more moderate cost than Andersen's wood-interior lines.
  • 400 Series. This is Andersen's long-running wood-interior window, with protective cladding on the exterior. It's a strong fit where you want real wood inside the room, which often applies to the older bungalows and Craftsman-influenced homes downtown and around Broadmoor. The low-maintenance exterior means no repainting.
  • A-Series. This is Andersen's architectural tier. It pairs wood interiors with durable exterior materials and offers more design latitude in shapes, finishes, and hardware. It makes the most sense on remodels or custom homes, including some of the larger hillside houses, where the windows are a design feature rather than a straight swap.

Andersen also offers wood and clad-wood options beyond these series. The right choice depends on your budget, your home's style, and how the window needs to look from inside and out.

Honest trade-offs

Andersen sits at the higher end of the market, and its wood-interior series in particular cost more than mainstream vinyl. If your main goal is to replace worn aluminum sliders on a ranch as economically as possible, a vinyl line may deliver the energy upgrade for less. The Milgard and California-made Anlin pages lay out those alternatives. If you're leaning premium wood or fiberglass, compare Marvin and Pella too. We install all five brands, so our recommendation isn't tied to steering you toward one.

One point often confuses shoppers. Renewal by Andersen is a separate full-service retail division with its own product and sales process. When we talk about Andersen windows, we mean the Andersen-brand series above, which we install as your contractor. We are not affiliated with Renewal by Andersen and are not an Andersen-certified dealer.

Matching Andersen series to San Leandro's housing

Much of San Leandro was built between the 1920s and the 1960s, and the housing breaks into a few recognizable patterns. Each one points toward different Andersen choices.

Downtown and Broadmoor bungalows. These homes often still have original wood double-hung windows, sometimes painted shut or with worn balances. The goal is usually to keep the character while gaining modern insulated glass. A 400 Series double-hung with a wood interior tends to sit naturally in these rooms. We pay attention to sash proportions and exterior trim so the new windows read right from the street.

Postwar ranch tracts. The low, horizontal ranches built out after the war commonly have aluminum sliders. For these, 100 Series gliding or casement units give a cleaner profile and meaningfully better thermal performance than old single-pane aluminum. The composite frame suits the simple, horizontal lines of a ranch.

Hillside homes above Bay-O-Vista. Larger openings and view-oriented rooms may warrant A-Series or larger-format units. This is also the part of town where fire-hazard mapping can come into play (more below).

On climate, San Leandro sits close to the bay and sees mild temperatures, marine air, and fog more than hard heat. That doesn't dictate a particular window. It does make a low-maintenance exterior frame practical, since you're not signing up for repainting cycles. Glass choices, meanwhile, are driven mainly by energy-code compliance and comfort.

San Leandro permitting and code

Window replacement in San Leandro is permitted through the City of San Leandro Building & Safety Division, part of the Community Development Department. Most window replacements are issued without plan review. The city also publishes homeowner window and door guidelines, and we specify Andersen units to meet them:

  • Title 24 energy label. Replacement windows must carry a label showing Title 24-compliant performance. Andersen offers Low-E dual-pane glass packages. The exact U-factor (and, where relevant, solar heat gain) target depends on climate zone and the current code cycle, so we confirm the numbers at permit time rather than quoting a figure that could be outdated.
  • Safety glazing. Tempered glass is required in hazardous locations, such as in and beside doors, low glazing near floors, and around stairs. We identify those openings before ordering.
  • Bedroom egress. Every sleeping room needs an escape-and-rescue opening that meets minimum clear-opening, height, width, and sill-height requirements. Changing window style, for example from a slider to a casement or double-hung, can change the clear opening. We check egress against the specific Andersen unit before placing the order.

Fire-zone note for the slopes. Most of San Leandro is flat bay plain and isn't shaped by high-fire terrain. The State Fire Marshal's 2025 maps did add Moderate and High Fire Hazard Severity areas toward the eastern edge and the slopes above Bay-O-Vista. If your parcel falls in a mapped zone, exterior glazing may carry added California Building Code Chapter 7A requirements, depending on the parcel and scope. We confirm your designation and any requirements with the city before ordering. For most San Leandro homes, it isn't a factor.

How an Andersen installation goes

It starts with a consultation. We look at your existing windows and openings and talk through which series fits your goals. Then we field-measure every opening; Andersen units are ordered to size, so accurate measuring matters. Next comes the install method:

  • A retrofit (insert) install keeps the existing frame and is less invasive.
  • A new-construction (full-frame) install removes the old frame so the opening can be inspected and the flashing fully renewed. It's usually the right call where there's rot or a history of leaks.

We handle the permit. On install day, old units come out, openings are checked, and new windows are set level and plumb, flashed, and air-sealed. We finish with trim, an operation check on every window, cleanup, and a walkthrough with you.

What drives the cost

Andersen pricing varies widely, so an online number wouldn't be honest. The main factors are:

  • Series. The 100 Series costs less than the 400 Series or A-Series.
  • Window count, size, and style. Casements, double-hungs, sliders, and specialty shapes all price differently.
  • Glass package and tempered locations.
  • Interior and exterior finishes and hardware.
  • Install method. Retrofit costs less than full-frame, and any rot repair found once old units come out adds to the scope.

We give you a written, itemized proposal so you can compare series side by side.

Andersen windows in San Leandro: FAQs

Will Andersen windows meet San Leandro's window guidelines? Andersen offers glass packages designed for energy-code compliance. We specify units that carry the Title 24 label the city requires, confirm current targets at permit time, and check safety-glazing and egress requirements opening by opening.

Which Andersen series is right for a 1950s ranch with aluminum sliders? Often the 100 Series. Its Fibrex frame is a big step up from single-pane aluminum at a more moderate cost than Andersen's wood-interior lines. If you want wood inside, the 400 Series is the step up.

What warranty comes with Andersen windows? Andersen publishes its own limited warranty, and terms vary by series and component. We review the current manufacturer terms with you for the specific products you choose rather than summarizing them loosely.

Can I combine Andersen windows with new siding? Yes. Doing both together lets us integrate window flashing with the new water-resistive barrier. See our San Leandro siding replacement page.
