Andersen is often on the list when a Saratoga homeowner wants a recognized national brand. That tends to happen on a custom hillside house, a well-kept ranch near the Village, or a mid-century home whose original openings deserve a window with some architectural presence. Andersen's lineup is built around its Fibrex composite and clad-wood construction. That makes it a different choice from an all-vinyl replacement window and a step below a full custom architectural order.

Bay Area Siding Company is a siding and window contractor based in Larkspur, Marin, and we work across the South Bay. We install Andersen windows. We are not an Andersen-certified or authorized dealer, and we won't claim to be. Our job is to help you pick the right Andersen line for your openings, confirm the glazing your parcel needs, pull the permit, and install each unit so it stays dry and sealed.

Where Andersen makes sense on a Saratoga house

Most Saratoga window decisions start with two things: the view and the house itself. Many homes here are large single-family houses on generous lots. They are oriented toward the valley, the ridgeline, or a wooded canyon, and the glass is often large.

Andersen tends to suit three situations:

  • You want a wood interior. Andersen's clad-wood construction puts real wood on the inside and a protective, low-maintenance cladding on the outside. On a custom or traditional interior, that warmth is hard to match with vinyl.
  • You want something more stable than vinyl without going to full wood. Fibrex is Andersen's composite of wood fiber and thermoplastic polymer. It is positioned as stiffer and more dimensionally stable than standard vinyl, which helps on larger units and in narrower frame profiles.
  • Brand recognition matters to you. On a higher-value home, some owners simply prefer a name buyers and appraisers already know.

Andersen is not the obvious pick if the priority is the lowest cost per opening. Vinyl lines from Anlin or Milgard usually cost less. It is also not the default for very large, highly custom architectural openings, where Marvin's Signature line is often part of the comparison. We'll tell you plainly when another brand fits the house better.

The Andersen lineup, in plain terms

Andersen sells several product families. The three we discuss most often for Saratoga replacements:

100 Series. This is Andersen's full-Fibrex line: frame and sash are made entirely of the composite. It is the most approachable Andersen tier on price. It is aimed at homeowners who want more rigidity and a cleaner profile than typical vinyl but don't need a wood interior. It works well on the valley-floor ranches and 1960s–70s tract-era homes where a straightforward, durable window is the goal.

400 Series. This is Andersen's long-running wood-interior line with exterior protection, and it is the one most people picture when they think "Andersen." It comes in a broad range of styles, including casement, double-hung, awning, gliding, and picture units. That makes it a practical choice for matching the mix of openings on an older custom home.

A-Series. This is the upper tier. It pairs a wood interior with Fibrex on the exterior and gives more design and finish options. It suits the architecturally minded projects in Saratoga: a remodel where the windows are a design feature, or a hillside house where the frames will be seen from both sides of a view wall.

Andersen also offers other wood and clad-wood configurations beyond these three. Availability of specific sizes, colors, hardware, and glass packages varies by line, so we confirm against the current Andersen catalog for your exact openings rather than promise from memory.

A note on names: Renewal by Andersen is Andersen's separate full-service replacement business, sold and installed through its own channel. We install Andersen's dealer-distributed product lines, not Renewal's.

Honest trade-offs

  • Cost. Andersen sits in the mid-to-premium range. The 100 Series narrows the gap with good vinyl, but the 400 and A-Series cost more per opening.
  • Wood interiors need some care. Interior wood surfaces are finished like trim and may need occasional attention over the years. The exterior cladding is the low-maintenance side.
  • Lead times. Custom sizes, colors, and specialty glass can extend ordering time. We build that into the schedule, especially when windows are sequenced with a siding replacement.
  • Warranty. Andersen publishes limited warranties that differ by product line and component. We walk through the terms for the specific line you choose rather than quote a blanket figure.

Foothill parcels: glazing comes first

Saratoga's western neighborhoods climb into the Santa Cruz Mountains foothills. Cal Fire's updated Local Responsibility Area Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps, released in February 2025, place much of that hillside and canyon terrain, such as the roads toward Bohlman, Pierce, and Mount Eden, in High or Very High zones.

Where a parcel is designated, California Building Code Chapter 7A applies to regulated exterior glazing. The window assembly generally must be multi-pane with at least one tempered pane, alongside the code's other requirements for those openings. Whether this applies to your project depends on your parcel's mapped zone and whether the work counts as a repair or an alteration.

Andersen offers tempered glass options across its lines. We confirm the requirement for your parcel with the City of Saratoga before ordering, then specify the glass to match. Valley-floor homes outside a mapped zone usually don't carry this requirement, so we don't add it by default.

Energy performance and view glass

Andersen offers dual-pane Low-E glass packages across its lineup. California's Title 24 energy code sets maximum U-factor and SHGC values for replacement windows, and the exact numbers depend on climate zone and the code cycle in effect. We don't quote fixed figures here. Instead, we confirm the current requirements at permit time and choose an Andersen glass package that meets them.

On a big view wall, the glass choice also affects how clear and neutral the view looks. That's worth seeing in a sample before you commit.

Permit, install, and what to expect

Window replacement in Saratoga is permitted through the City of Saratoga Building Division, part of the Community Development Department. A like-for-like replacement that doesn't change the framing is the simpler path. Enlarging an opening moves it into structural-permit territory. A Title 24 compliance form is part of a typical submittal, and we handle the paperwork and inspections.

Retrofit or full-frame. Many Andersen units can be installed as a retrofit (insert) inside the existing frame, which is the less invasive route. A new-construction (full-frame) install removes the old frame back to the rough opening so the flashing can be fully renewed. That is the right call where an opening shows rot or a history of leaks.

Install steps. Each unit is set level and plumb, then flashed and air-sealed. We finish with trim and caulking, an operation check, and a final walkthrough with you. On steep lots and upper stories, we plan the extra access and staging in advance.

What drives the cost of an Andersen project

We don't post prices, because Saratoga jobs vary widely. The main variables are:

  • The Andersen line (100 vs. 400 vs. A-Series)
  • The number and size of openings, especially large view units
  • Window style and operating type
  • Interior finish and exterior color
  • Glass package, including tempered glazing where the fire zone requires it
  • Retrofit vs. full-frame installation
  • Any rot repair found at the openings
  • Access on hillside or multi-story homes

Andersen windows in Saratoga: FAQs

Does my Saratoga home need tempered glass in its new Andersen windows? It depends on your parcel. If it falls in a designated Fire Hazard Severity Zone and the work triggers Chapter 7A, regulated openings generally need multi-pane glazing with at least one tempered pane. We verify with the City of Saratoga before ordering.

What's the difference between Fibrex and vinyl? Fibrex is Andersen's composite of wood fiber and polymer. It is positioned as stiffer and more stable than standard vinyl, which supports slimmer profiles and larger units. Vinyl is generally the lower-cost option.

Which Andersen line fits a mid-century or ranch home? The 100 Series often suits a straightforward ranch replacement. The 400 Series works where you want a wood interior and a broad range of styles. We decide after looking at your existing openings.

Are you the same company as Renewal by Andersen? No. Renewal by Andersen is Andersen's separate direct-sales replacement business. Bay Area Siding Company is an independent contractor that installs Andersen's dealer-channel windows.
