Andersen is a national, premium window brand. Most homeowners who ask for it by name want two things: a window that looks right on a house with real character, and a frame they won't be scraping and repainting every few years. Vallejo has plenty of houses with that kind of character. Its Italianate and Queen Anne Victorians, Colonial Revivals, and early-1900s bungalows often still have their original single-pane wood sash, so the brand question matters here more than it does in a newer tract.

Bay Area Siding Company is a Larkspur-based window and siding contractor working across Vallejo and Solano County. We install Andersen windows, and we'll also tell you plainly when a different brand fits your budget or opening better.

What sets Andersen apart: Fibrex and clad wood

Andersen's signature material is Fibrex, a composite of wood fiber and thermoplastic polymer. It sits between vinyl and wood:

  • It is meant to be stiffer and more stable than a typical vinyl frame.
  • It needs far less upkeep than bare wood.

Andersen builds several of its best-known lines around that idea. It also offers wood and clad-wood construction for homeowners who want real wood on the inside of the room.

Here is how the main lines differ in practice:

  • 100 Series. Made from Fibrex throughout. This is Andersen's entry point into the composite. It's a clean, low-maintenance frame for homeowners who want Andersen's material without paying for a wood interior. It suits bungalows, later additions, and secondary rooms where a painted wood interior isn't the priority.
  • 400 Series. Andersen's long-running core line. It pairs a wood interior with a low-maintenance exterior cladding. It's a common choice for owners who want the warmth of wood inside and minimal exterior upkeep.
  • A-Series. Andersen's more architecturally detailed line. It has wood interiors, a composite exterior, and more attention to profiles, proportions, and finish options. On a Vallejo Victorian where the window is part of the facade's design, this is often where the conversation ends up.

Exact configurations, colors, hardware, and glass packages vary by line and change over time. We walk through current options with you using Andersen's published literature rather than promising a spec from memory.

The honest trade-offs

Andersen isn't the right answer for every house, and it helps to know why before you fall for a brochure:

  • Cost posture. Andersen generally sits above most all-vinyl windows. A whole-house Andersen project, especially in the wood-interior lines, is a real investment. If the main goal is simply getting off single-pane glass on a budget, a quality vinyl such as Anlin or Milgard's vinyl lines may deliver most of the comfort gain for less.
  • Wood interiors still need care. The exterior cladding cuts outdoor maintenance, but a wood interior is still wood. It needs finishing and reasonable care, and condensation shouldn't be left sitting on it.
  • Alternatives at the top end. If you're considering large custom openings or all-fiberglass construction, look at Marvin. If you want one brand spanning wood, fiberglass, and vinyl, compare Pella. We install all of these and have no stake in steering you to one.

For many Vallejo owners of older homes, the argument for Andersen comes down to appearance per dollar. A composite or clad-wood frame with the right profile reads as traditional from the street far more convincingly than a generic white vinyl insert.

Fitting Andersen into a Vallejo Victorian or bungalow

Older Vallejo houses have openings that were built by hand, rarely square, and often surrounded by original trim you'll want to keep. That shapes how an Andersen window goes in.

Retrofit (insert) installation keeps the existing frame and trim in place and sets the new unit inside it. It's less invasive and protects interior and exterior casings. The trade-off is a slightly smaller glass area, and it only works if the existing frame is sound.

New-construction (full-frame) installation removes the old window back to the rough opening. This lets us inspect the framing, repair rot, and fully renew the flashing and water-resistive barrier tie-in. It's the right call where a sill is soft, water has gotten in, or the surrounding siding is being replaced anyway. Pairing it with siding replacement in Vallejo lets both jobs be flashed as one system.

We decide opening by opening, not house by house. A sheltered side wall may be a clean retrofit while a windward bay-facing wall needs a full-frame install.

Historic district review comes before the order

This step decides whether your Andersen choice gets built at all. Vallejo has designated historic districts, including the Architectural Heritage District and St. Vincent's Hill, along with individually listed landmarks. If your home is in one of those districts or is itself a landmark, changing window appearance can require a Certificate of Appropriateness before a permit is issued. The review procedures are in Vallejo Municipal Code 16.614.09 and handled through the Planning Division.

Andersen's wood-interior lines and grille options give us more room to match original sightlines, divided-lite patterns, and exterior profiles. That is often why owners in these districts look at the brand in the first place. Whether a given unit will be approved is still a review decision. We scope the project so the Andersen line and configuration we propose is one that can realistically pass.

Wind off the bay: install quality matters as much as the brand

Vallejo sits where San Pablo Bay narrows into the Carquinez Strait. Waterfront and exposed neighborhoods get steady marine wind. A premium frame won't stop drafts by itself. What keeps wind and wind-driven rain out is how the unit is set:

  • level and plumb,
  • flashed correctly at the head, jambs, and sill,
  • air-sealed to the rough opening.

We treat those details as the core of the job, because a well-built window installed carelessly still leaks.

Energy code and permits in Vallejo

Andersen offers dual-pane Low-E glass packages across its lines. California's Title 24 energy code sets maximum U-factor and SHGC values for replacement windows, and those limits depend on climate zone and the current code cycle. We confirm the requirement at permit time and choose a glass package that meets it rather than quoting numbers that may be out of date.

The City of Vallejo requires a building permit for window replacement. It's submitted through the Building Division at the Central Permit Center, with a Title 24 energy compliance form as part of the submittal.

The process runs like this:

  1. We measure each opening.
  2. You choose the Andersen line, glass, and finishes.
  3. We pull the permit.
  4. We install, inspecting each opening as the old unit comes out.
  5. We finish the trim and walk the results with you.

What drives the cost of an Andersen project

There's no fair online price, but the variables are predictable:

  • which Andersen line you choose (100 Series vs. 400 Series vs. A-Series)
  • the number and size of openings, plus any specialty shapes
  • interior finish, exterior color, grilles, and hardware
  • retrofit vs. full-frame installation
  • rot or framing repair found at the opening
  • whether historic-district review applies
  • access on upper stories and tight downtown lots

Frequently asked questions

Is Andersen worth it over a vinyl window for my Vallejo home? It depends on the house. On a Victorian or Colonial Revival where the windows define the facade, Andersen's Fibrex and clad-wood lines usually look noticeably more authentic than standard vinyl. On a simpler bungalow or a rear elevation, a quality vinyl may give you similar comfort for less. We'll show you both side by side.

What's the difference between the 100 Series and the 400 Series? The 100 Series is made from Fibrex composite throughout and has a composite interior. The 400 Series uses a wood interior with low-maintenance exterior cladding. Choose the 400 if you want wood inside the room; choose the 100 for a lower-maintenance composite window at a lower price.

Can Andersen windows be used in Vallejo's historic districts? Often, yes. Their profiles and grille options help match original openings. If your home is in the Architectural Heritage District, St. Vincent's Hill, or is a designated landmark, window changes may need a Certificate of Appropriateness first. We plan the selection around that review.

Are you an Andersen dealer? We install Andersen windows along with Anlin, Milgard, Marvin, Pella, and aluminum units. We don't claim any special Andersen certification. We recommend the brand that fits your house.
