Andersen is one of the most recognized names in American windows. For a San Bruno homeowner, the real question is not whether the brand is well known. It's which Andersen line fits your house, your budget, and the jet noise and gap wind that come with living here.

Bay Area Siding Company is a Larkspur-based siding and window contractor working the Peninsula. We install Andersen windows alongside several other brands, so we can tell you honestly when Andersen is the right call and when another manufacturer fits better.

Talk it through with us: call (415) 619-5167 or request an estimate. We'll look at your openings and walk you through the Andersen options that make sense for them.

What sets Andersen apart

Andersen's main distinction is Fibrex, a proprietary composite of wood fiber and thermoplastic polymer. It's meant to carry some of wood's stiffness and stability while resisting the rot and peeling that wear down painted wood frames.

The brand also has a long history in wood and clad-wood windows. As a result, the lineup spans a wider range of looks and price points than a vinyl-only manufacturer.

The Andersen lines we most often discuss with San Bruno homeowners:

  • 100 Series: built from Fibrex composite throughout. This is Andersen's entry into the replacement market. It's a step up from basic vinyl in rigidity and profile, and it comes in a range of colors, including darker exterior finishes.
  • 400 Series: Andersen's long-running wood window with a low-maintenance exterior cladding. You get real wood on the inside, where you see and touch it, and a protective shell on the outside, where the weather is.
  • A-Series: the architectural tier. It pairs a wood interior with a durable composite exterior and more design flexibility. It suits homeowners who want a custom, high-end look.

Honest trade-offs:

  • Price. Andersen generally sits above value-focused vinyl brands, and the wood-interior lines climb further. If budget is the main driver, a California-built vinyl window like Anlin or a Milgard vinyl line may deliver similar comfort for less.
  • Upkeep on wood interiors. Real wood inside still needs normal interior care.
  • Other premium options. Homeowners who want fiberglass or very large custom units may also want to compare Marvin and Pella.

We'll put the options side by side for your specific openings.

A note on "Renewal by Andersen"

Homeowners sometimes ask whether we are Renewal by Andersen. We're not. Renewal by Andersen is a separate replacement business owned by Andersen, with its own sales and installation model.

Bay Area Siding Company is an independent contractor. We install Andersen-branded windows as one option among several brands we carry.

Quieter rooms under the SFO flight paths

In most cities, window shopping starts with energy efficiency. In San Bruno, noise often comes first. Much of the city sits within San Francisco International Airport's influence area, and aircraft overhead is part of daily life. Replacing original single-pane glass is the biggest single step most homeowners can take toward quieter bedrooms.

Window sound performance is measured by Sound Transmission Class (STC). The main factors are:

  • The glass package. Laminated glass and dual-pane units with panes of different thicknesses generally outperform standard insulated glass.
  • The installation. A tight air seal around the frame matters too, because sound travels wherever air can.

Andersen offers several glass options across its lines. Published STC ratings vary by product, size, and glass configuration, so we pull the rating for the exact unit and glass package you're considering rather than quoting a brand-wide number. If a quiet nursery or home office is the goal, tell us at the first visit so we can build the spec around it.

Built for the gap climate, sized for mid-century openings

San Bruno sits where ocean air and wind push inland through the coastal gap. That means fog, damp mornings, and wind-driven rain rather than inland heat.

Rigid frames and exteriors that don't need repainting are practical choices here, which is one reason Fibrex and clad lines appeal. Just as important is a clean installation: sill pan, flashing tied into the water-resistive barrier, and a continuous air seal. A premium window installed poorly will still leak air and water in a stiff westerly.

Much of the city's housing, including Crestmoor, Rollingwood, and Mills Park, was built in the postwar decades. Older cottages sit nearer downtown and Belle Air. Many of these homes still have original wood sashes, and Andersen's lines give us room to match the style:

  • Slim, simple profiles suit ranch and split-level homes.
  • Wood interiors suit homeowners who want to keep a warmer, period feel inside.

Retrofit or full-frame?

We install Andersen windows two ways, and the condition of each opening decides which.

  • Retrofit (insert) installation leaves the existing frame in place and sets the new unit inside it. It's less invasive and usually costs less, but it only works when the old frame is sound.
  • New-construction (full-frame) installation removes the old window back to the rough opening. That lets us inspect for rot and fully renew the flashing and its tie-in to the weather barrier. It's the right choice where there's water staining, soft sills, or a history of leaks, which is not unusual on homes that have faced decades of wind-driven rain.

If you're also considering new siding, a full-frame window install pairs naturally with a re-side. Our San Bruno siding replacement page covers that decision.

Permits, energy paperwork, and fire-zone edge parcels

Permits and energy compliance. Window replacement in San Bruno requires a building permit from the city's Community & Economic Development Department, Building Division. The Title 24 energy compliance documentation goes in with the application.

Energy requirements for glazing vary by climate zone and code cycle. We confirm the values in effect when we pull the permit and make sure the Andersen units you select meet them. We handle the paperwork.

Fire-zone edge parcels. Most of San Bruno is not in a mapped fire hazard zone. However, the city has adopted the state's Fire Hazard Severity Zone map, and some hillside and open-space-edge parcels, such as near Portola Highlands or the Sweeney Ridge foothills, can be designated.

Where an opening in a designated-zone home is altered, California Building Code Chapter 7A can affect the glazing, generally calling for multi-pane units with at least one tempered pane. Whether it applies depends on your parcel and the scope of work, so we check your address and confirm with the Building Division before ordering.

What moves the price of an Andersen project

We don't publish prices, because the following factors change the number significantly:

  • Series. The 100 Series, 400 Series, and A-Series sit at different price points.
  • Unit count, size, and operating style. Casement, double-hung, sliding, and picture windows are priced differently.
  • Glass package. Laminated or sound-focused glass adds cost.
  • Installation method. Retrofit and full-frame installs differ, and repairs to rotted openings add to the total.
  • Code requirements. Tempered glazing required by code, and access to second-story openings, also affect the price.

After a site visit, you'll get a written scope so you can compare options clearly. You can also browse our projects and see the other Peninsula communities we serve.

FAQs

Will Andersen windows really cut airplane noise in San Bruno? Replacing single-pane glass with a well-sealed dual-pane unit typically makes a noticeable difference. Sound-focused glass options go further. The actual performance depends on the specific product and glass configuration, so we check the published STC rating for the unit you choose instead of promising a general result.

Is Fibrex just another word for vinyl? No. Fibrex is Andersen's composite of wood fiber and thermoplastic polymer. It's designed to be stiffer and more stable than standard vinyl while still resisting rot. The 100 Series is built from it.

Do I need a permit to replace Andersen windows in San Bruno? Yes. San Bruno's Building Division requires a building permit for window replacement, along with Title 24 energy documentation. We prepare and submit both.

Which Andersen line is right for my mid-century home? It depends on your budget and whether you want wood inside. The 100 Series is the value entry. The 400 Series adds a real wood interior. The A-Series is for design-driven projects. We'll show you samples at your home.
