Andersen is the window many San Carlos homeowners already know by name before they ever call a contractor. The more useful question is which Andersen line fits your house. A 1920s Craftsman in Howard Park, a stucco Spanish Revival above downtown, and a post-war home in Clearfield Park each call for something different. Bay Area Siding Company is a Larkspur-based siding and window contractor serving the Peninsula. We install Andersen windows and handle the full job: measuring, line and glass selection, the City permit, removal, flashing, air-sealing, and the final walkthrough.

Why homeowners choose Andersen

Andersen is a national, premium-positioned manufacturer with a wide product range. Its best-known material is Fibrex, a composite of wood fiber and thermoplastic polymer. Andersen developed Fibrex to give a frame some of wood's stiffness and stability without wood's appetite for moisture and rot. You'll find Fibrex across the lineup in different roles:

  • 100 Series: frames made entirely of Fibrex. This is Andersen's most accessible line. It's a practical choice for homeowners who want the brand and the composite without a wood interior.
  • 400 Series: the long-running core line. It pairs a wood interior with a low-maintenance protective exterior, and Fibrex is part of the construction. It's a natural fit where you want real wood inside the room.
  • A-Series: the upper, architecture-driven line. It offers a wood interior, a durable exterior that uses Fibrex, and more design and finish latitude for homes where the window is part of the architecture.

Beyond Fibrex, Andersen offers wood and clad-wood options. So "Andersen" can mean a clean, modest composite window or a detailed wood unit, depending on the line. That range is the brand's real strength, and it's why we talk series before we talk price.

Matching the line to the San Carlos house

San Carlos has a genuinely mixed housing stock, and the window decision tends to follow the house.

Craftsman bungalows in White Oaks and Howard Park. Many of these homes still carry original single-pane wood sashes. A wood-interior Andersen, typically the 400 Series or A-Series, keeps the warmth of wood trim inside. The exterior cladding means you aren't scraping and repainting the outside of the sash every few years. On a house where the window pattern defines the facade, we pay close attention to sightlines and divided-lite options so the new units don't read as an afterthought.

1920s–30s Mediterranean and Spanish-style stucco homes. Here the concern is often as much about the wall as the window. If a unit can be replaced as a retrofit insert without disturbing the stucco, that's usually the lighter path. If the opening shows rot or past water intrusion, a full-frame installation is the honest answer, even though it means cutting stucco back. We explain that trade-off below.

Post-war and mid-century homes, including much of Clearfield Park. These homes often have simpler openings and aluminum or early replacement windows. The 100 Series frequently makes sense here: Andersen quality and a Fibrex frame at a lower price point than the wood-interior lines.

Not every San Carlos home needs the top of the Andersen range. We would rather recommend the line that suits the house than the most expensive one.

Honest trade-offs

Andersen isn't the right answer for every budget or every homeowner.

  • Cost posture. Andersen's wood-interior lines sit toward the premium end of the market. If energy performance and a clean look are the main goals and wood isn't a priority, vinyl lines from Anlin or Milgard may deliver what you need for less.
  • Wood still wants care inside. A wood interior needs to be finished and maintained like any interior woodwork.
  • Custom and large openings. If your project leans heavily on oversized or highly custom units, compare the A-Series against Marvin, which is known for design flexibility at the high end. Pella is another national brand with wood, fiberglass, and vinyl options across a wide price range.
  • Who you buy from. Andersen products are also sold through Renewal by Andersen, the company's own replacement business. Bay Area Siding Company is an independent contractor and not affiliated with Renewal by Andersen. We install Andersen product lines as part of our own window work.

Retrofit or full-frame: the installation decision

The brand matters less than the installation if the opening isn't handled correctly.

  • A retrofit (insert) installation sets the new Andersen unit inside the existing frame. It's less invasive and usually faster, and it works well when the old frame is sound and dry.
  • A new-construction (full-frame) installation removes the old unit, frame and all, down to the rough opening. That lets us inspect the framing around the opening and fully renew the flashing and water-resistive barrier integration. It's the right call when we find soft wood, staining, or evidence of leaks.

We decide which approach to use after examining each opening, not before.

The San Carlos permit side

The City of San Carlos Building Division at 600 Elm Street requires a permit and inspection to install or replace windows and patio doors. A like-for-like swap doesn't need plans. Adding a new opening or enlarging an existing one does, because framing and header details come into play. We pull the permit for you.

Two local inspection points shape our schedule:

  • Nail-fin units are inspected before exterior trim goes on. Full-frame Andersen installs typically use nailing fins. The inspector confirms flashing and sealing before the trim covers them, so we plan the job around that stop.
  • Stucco homes get a lath inspection. When stucco is cut back for a window, the City requires a lath inspection before the scratch coat. The lath must lap correctly over the flashing. On the older Mediterranean homes this is common, and we build the hold point in rather than rush the patch.

Energy code. California's Title 24 sets limits on replacement-window energy performance. The specific values depend on climate zone and code cycle, so we confirm the current requirements at permit time and choose an Andersen glass package that meets them. We don't quote fixed numbers that may not apply to your home.

Egress and safety glazing. Sleeping rooms need egress-compliant openings, and tempered or laminated glass is required in certain locations, such as near doors, tubs, and stairs. If swapping a window style changes the clear opening, we flag it before ordering.

West-side parcels. The City of San Carlos treats properties west of Alameda de las Pulgas as high risk for fire and has adopted fire-code provisions for its high fire danger area. Whether that affects glazing on your project depends on your parcel and the scope of work. We confirm it with the City and the San Carlos and Redwood City Fire Department rather than assume. If you live up toward Crestview, Devonshire, or the Alder Manor slopes, mention it at the first visit.

What drives the cost of an Andersen project

We don't post prices because the variables differ from house to house. The main drivers are:

  • Which series you choose: 100 Series, 400 Series, or A-Series.
  • Number, size, and style of the openings.
  • Interior finish, exterior color, and divided-lite or hardware options.
  • Retrofit versus full-frame installation.
  • Stucco cutting and patching.
  • Repairs found at the opening.
  • Access on hillside lots.
  • Code-driven items: new egress or safety glazing requirements.

Andersen windows in San Carlos: FAQs

Is Fibrex the same as vinyl? No. Fibrex is Andersen's composite of wood fiber and thermoplastic polymer. It's engineered to be stiffer and more stable than standard vinyl. Andersen uses it throughout the 100 Series frame and as part of the 400 Series and A-Series construction.

Will Andersen windows look right on my Craftsman or Spanish-style home in San Carlos? Usually, with the right line. Wood-interior options in the 400 Series and A-Series, plus divided-lite configurations, suit many of the older homes in White Oaks, Howard Park, and around downtown. We review sightlines and profiles against your existing openings before recommending anything.

Do I need a permit to replace windows in San Carlos? Yes. The City of San Carlos Building Division requires a permit and inspection for window and patio door replacement. Plans are only needed if an opening is added or enlarged. We handle the filing and schedule the nail-fin and any stucco lath inspections.

Are you an Andersen dealer? We install Andersen windows as an independent contractor, and we're not affiliated with Renewal by Andersen. If another brand fits your home or budget better, we'll tell you.
