Andersen is one of the most recognized window names in the country. It is usually on the list for San Anselmo homeowners who want a premium window with a warm interior and a low-maintenance exterior. That combination makes sense in a town where many houses are pre-1940 Craftsman bungalows, Tudor cottages, and shingle-style homes, and where original single-pane wood sashes are still common.

Bay Area Siding Company is a Larkspur-based siding and window contractor, and we install Andersen windows throughout Marin. Our work covers measuring each opening, helping you choose a series and glass package, pulling the permit, and handling removal, flashing, air-sealing, and finish trim.

Considering Andersen? Request a bid or call (415) 619-5167 to set up a consultation at the house.

What sets Andersen apart

Andersen's main distinction is Fibrex, its proprietary composite material. Andersen uses it in different ways across its lineup:

  • 100 Series: an all-Fibrex frame. This is Andersen's entry into composite windows. It has a clean, painted-look appearance and does not need exterior painting.
  • 400 Series: Andersen's long-running core line. It pairs a real wood interior with a protective exterior cladding, so you get wood warmth inside and much less exterior upkeep than bare wood.
  • A-Series: the architectural tier. It offers more design flexibility, more color and hardware choices, and profiles aimed at homes where detail matters.

Andersen also makes wood and clad-wood configurations beyond these core series. Across the range, the brand is positioned at the higher end of the market. You are paying partly for the materials, partly for the finish and hardware options, and partly for the brand's recognition when a house eventually sells.

Honest trade-offs:

  • Cost. Andersen's clad-wood series generally cost more than mainstream vinyl.
  • Lead times. Custom sizes and options can take longer to arrive.
  • Wood interiors need care. A wood interior still needs finishing and some attention over time.

If budget is the main driver, a vinyl window from Anlin or Milgard may be a better fit. We install those too and are glad to price both.

Choosing a series for a period San Anselmo house

The biggest question on most San Anselmo Andersen projects is appearance, not efficiency. Walk through the Yolanda District, Winship Park, or the cottage blocks near downtown, and the windows do a lot of the work of making a house read as a Craftsman or a Tudor. Divided-lite patterns, sash proportions, and trim depth all matter.

Here is how the series tend to line up with local housing:

  • Craftsman bungalows and shingle-style homes. The 400 Series or A-Series usually suits these best. The wood interior matches original millwork, and the exterior cladding can be chosen in colors that sit well against shingles or painted trim. Simulated divided-lite grilles can recreate an upper-sash pattern where the original windows had one.
  • Tudor and cottage revival homes. Casement and awning configurations often matter here. We look closely at what the original openings were before recommending a unit type.
  • Mid-century and later homes on the hillsides. The 100 Series can be a cost-conscious way into the Andersen family, especially where a painted exterior look is fine and wood interiors aren't a priority.

We'll bring samples and talk through sightlines before anything is ordered. A window that looks right on a spec sheet can look heavy in a hundred-year-old opening.

Glass and comfort in a cool, damp valley

San Anselmo sits in the shaded Ross Valley, where winters are cool and wet and gray mornings are common. Andersen offers dual-pane insulated glass with Low-E coatings across its series. That glass is the practical baseline here. It reduces drafts, cuts down on condensation on the inside of the glass, and holds heat better than the single panes it usually replaces.

California's Title 24 energy code sets maximum U-factor and SHGC values for replacement windows. Those limits depend on climate zone and code cycle, so we don't quote fixed numbers. Instead, we confirm the requirement in effect at permit time and select the Andersen glass package that meets it.

Retrofit or full-frame?

Andersen products can be installed two ways, and the right choice depends on what we find in the wall.

  • Insert (retrofit) installation. The new unit goes into the existing frame. This is less disruptive and keeps interior and exterior trim intact, and it works well when the old frame is sound.
  • Full-frame (new-construction) installation. The old window is removed to the rough opening so the flashing can be fully renewed. This is often the better choice when sills are soft or there is evidence of past water intrusion, which we frequently see on shaded elevations of older San Anselmo homes.

We'll show you what we find and explain why we're recommending one method over the other.

Permits, the hillsides, and the creek flats

Permits. Window replacement in town is generally permitted work through the Town of San Anselmo's Building Division. A Title 24 fenestration compliance form is typically part of the submittal, and we prepare the paperwork and pull the permit.

The hillsides. Homes on the wooded slopes of Seminary Hill, Bald Hill, and near Sleepy Hollow sit in terrain with wildfire exposure. Cal Fire has also been updating Fire Hazard Severity Zones for local-responsibility areas across the Ross Valley. Where fire-zone provisions apply, altered openings may call for multi-pane glazing with at least one tempered pane. Whether that applies to your windows depends on your parcel's designation and the project scope, so we confirm it with Ross Valley Fire and the Town during scoping. Andersen offers tempered glass options that can be specified when required.

The creek flats. On the lower flats near San Anselmo Creek, careful flashing and air-sealing at each opening is especially worthwhile given the damp conditions. That work is part of every install we do.

What drives the cost of an Andersen project

We don't publish prices because every house differs. The main cost drivers are:

  • Series: 100, 400, or A-Series
  • Number, size, and style of openings: double-hung, casement, sliders, picture windows, or specialty shapes
  • Options: interior wood species and finish, exterior color, grille pattern, hardware, and glass upgrades such as tempered panes
  • Installation method: insert or full-frame
  • Repairs: any rot or water damage found once the old units come out
  • Permit and access conditions: including hillside lots with limited staging

How an Andersen job goes with us

We start with a walk-through and a conversation about look, comfort, and budget. From there, the steps are:

  1. We measure every opening precisely.
  2. We finalize the series and options.
  3. We handle permitting.
  4. We order the windows.
  5. On install days, we remove the old units, inspect the openings, and set each window level and plumb.
  6. We flash, air-seal, and trim each unit.
  7. We finish with an operation check and cleanup.

FAQs

Do you sell Renewal by Andersen? No. Renewal by Andersen is sold through its own separate network. We install Andersen-branded series such as the 100, 400, and A-Series, and we can compare them with other brands we install.

Will Andersen windows look right on my Yolanda District Craftsman? Usually, yes, when the series and details are chosen carefully. The 400 Series and A-Series offer wood interiors and grille patterns that can suit period homes. We look at your original openings and trim before recommending a configuration.

My home is on Seminary Hill. Do I need tempered glass? It depends on your parcel's fire hazard designation and the scope of work. We confirm the requirement with Ross Valley Fire and the Town of San Anselmo during scoping and specify tempered Andersen glass where it applies.

What warranty comes with Andersen windows? Andersen publishes its own limited warranty terms, which vary by product. We review the current terms for the series you choose before you order.
