Andersen is one of the most recognized names in American windows, and San Jose homeowners who ask for it by name usually want two things: a frame that looks and feels more substantial than builder-grade vinyl, and a brand with a long track record. Bay Area Siding Company installs Andersen windows throughout San Jose. We are a Marin-based siding and window contractor, and we handle the measuring, product selection, permitting, and installation.

Andersen's signature material is Fibrex, a composite the company makes from reclaimed wood fiber and thermoplastic polymer. Andersen markets Fibrex as a middle path between vinyl and wood. It is meant to be more rigid and dimensionally stable than standard vinyl, and it avoids the rot and refinishing that come with exposed wood.
For San Jose buyers, the practical benefits are:
The honest trade-off is cost. Andersen generally sits above value vinyl brands. If budget is the main driver, compare it with our Milgard and Anlin options before deciding.
Andersen's lineup is broad. These are the lines most relevant to a typical San Jose replacement:
100 Series. The full-Fibrex line, and usually the entry point for homeowners stepping up from vinyl. It offers clean lines, a range of exterior colors, and good value within the Andersen family. It is a natural fit for the many postwar ranch and tract homes in Cambrian, Berryessa, and Evergreen whose original aluminum sliders are due for replacement.
400 Series. Andersen's long-running wood-based line, with a protective exterior cladding. It suits homeowners who want real wood on the interior, such as in a Willow Glen bungalow or a traditional-style remodel, without exposed wood on the weather side.
A-Series. Andersen's architectural tier, with more design flexibility, finish choices, and configurations. It fits custom homes, larger openings, and remodels where the windows are a design centerpiece.
Andersen also offers other wood and clad-wood products. We will tell you which line actually fits your openings, style, and budget. We won't default to the most expensive option. For a broader overview, see our Bay Area Andersen windows page.
San Jose's neighborhoods ask different things of a replacement window.
Postwar tract homes. A lot of homes built across the valley from the 1950s through the 1970s still carry original single-pane aluminum windows. In San Jose's warm, sunny inland summers, those frames and that glass do little to slow heat. An Andersen dual-pane unit with a Low-E glass package is a meaningful upgrade in comfort. The 100 Series is often where these conversations land.
Mid-century modern and Eichler homes. San Jose has real mid-century modern pockets. One example is the Fairglen Additions in Willow Glen, a 218-home Eichler tract built 1959–1961 and listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 2019. On homes like these, sightlines, frame profile, and glass proportion matter as much as thermal performance. Andersen's slimmer Fibrex frames and darker exterior colors can suit the look, but every opening needs individual review. Very large fixed glass walls may call for custom solutions. If your home is on the City's Historic Resources Inventory, that affects permitting (see below), and we check before we spec.
Newer North San Jose homes. Newer homes often have code-era windows that are aging rather than failing. For those owners, Andersen tends to be an upgrade chosen for look, operation, or noise rather than a repair. We will be straightforward about whether replacement makes sense yet.
San Jose falls in California Energy Commission Climate Zone 4. In a sunny inland climate like this, controlling solar heat gain matters as much as insulating value. That makes the glass package central to any Andersen order. California's Title 24 energy code sets prescriptive targets for replacement windows. Those targets depend on the climate zone and the code cycle in effect, so we confirm the current requirements at permit time and configure your Andersen glass to meet them.
The City of San José handles its own building permits through Development Services. For windows, the trigger depends on scope:
We confirm the requirement for your specific project and handle the paperwork. If a bedroom window's frame is altered, the new opening still has to meet emergency-egress sizing.
Retrofit or full-frame? An insert (retrofit) installation places the new Andersen unit inside the existing frame. It is faster and minimizes disturbance to stucco and siding. A new-construction (full-frame) installation removes the old window completely so the rough opening can be inspected, repaired, and re-flashed. We recommend one or the other based on the condition of your existing frames and any signs of past water intrusion.
Foothill parcels. Some hillside properties in the eastern and western foothills fall within state-designated fire hazard areas. There, California Building Code Chapter 7A can set additional standards for glazing and other exterior openings. Whether it applies depends on the parcel and the scope of work, so we confirm with the City before choosing a glass package.
The job itself follows a clear sequence:
We don't publish prices because the variables are real. Cost depends on:
A site visit turns those into a specific number.
Windows and siding meet at the flashing. If your San Jose home also has swelling hardboard or T1-11 panels, replacing windows during a re-side lets both be flashed together properly. See San Jose siding replacement, compare every brand on our San Jose window replacement page, or browse finished work in our project gallery. We serve the wider region from our South Bay service area.
Do I need a permit to install Andersen windows in San Jose? It depends on scope, not brand. The City of San José generally requires a permit when the frame or flashing is altered, exterior wall finish is removed, or the home is on the Historic Resources Inventory. A simple insert into an unaltered frame may not need one. We confirm the requirement and handle the permit.
Is Fibrex better than vinyl? It is different. Andersen positions Fibrex as more rigid and stable than standard vinyl, with slimmer profiles and more dark-color options. Quality vinyl costs less and performs well. The right choice depends on your priorities for look, budget, and style.
Are Andersen windows a good fit for a Willow Glen Eichler? They can be. Andersen's slimmer frames and darker exteriors suit many mid-century designs, but Eichlers have distinctive glass proportions and sometimes very large fixed openings. We review each opening individually, and we check whether your home is on the City's Historic Resources Inventory before we spec.
Are you the same company as Renewal by Andersen? No. Renewal by Andersen is Andersen's own separate replacement-window business. Bay Area Siding Company is an independent contractor that installs Andersen-brand windows.
