Most window brands are known for one material. Pella makes vinyl, fiberglass, and wood lines, and that range is why a lot of homeowners shortlist it. A Windsor owner replacing builder-grade windows in a 1990s tract house and a neighbor updating a custom home in the hills can both find a suitable Pella line. Bay Area Siding Company is a Larkspur-based siding and window contractor working across Sonoma County, and we install Pella windows. Our job is to help you pick the right tier for your house and budget, then install it so it performs through Windsor's hot summers and wet winters.

Pella's range, from vinyl to architectural wood

Pella is best understood as a family of product lines at different price points. Here is how the main groups break down.

Vinyl: 250 Series and 350 Series. These are Pella's value-oriented lines and the most common choice for straightforward replacement in suburban homes. Vinyl never needs painting, handles Windsor's dry-season dust and winter rain without fuss, and suits the simple, clean lines of many of the town's subdivisions. The 350 Series sits above the 250 in the lineup. We walk through the specific differences in frame, glass options, and styles against your openings when we quote.

Fiberglass: Impervia. Impervia is Pella's fiberglass line. Fiberglass frames are strong and generally hold their shape well through temperature swings. That matters to homeowners whose west-facing windows sit in direct afternoon sun from June through September. Impervia costs more than vinyl, and many people choose it for durability and a slimmer look.

Wood: Lifestyle Series and Architect Series (including Reserve). These are Pella's wood lines. They put real wood on the interior and offer protective exterior cladding options on many configurations. The Architect Series, and Reserve at the top of the range, is aimed at homeowners who care about historically styled details, custom shapes, and furniture-grade interiors. In Windsor these lines usually suit custom or semi-custom homes and remodels where the window is part of the interior design, not just a replacement opening.

Most of Windsor's housing stock went up during the town's growth decades, the 1980s through the 2000s. The honest recommendation for a typical tract house is often a Pella vinyl or fiberglass line, not the top wood tier. We would rather match the product to the house than sell up.

How to choose a tier for a Windsor home

Four questions narrow it down quickly.

  1. What's your home's style and era? Newer tract homes generally look right with clean vinyl or fiberglass frames. A custom home with wood trim inside may justify the Lifestyle or Architect Series.
  2. Does your HOA have standards? Many Windsor subdivisions carry architectural guidelines covering frame color, grid patterns, and sometimes material. Check them before you settle on a look. We can spec Pella options to fit.
  3. How much sun do your windows take? South- and west-facing elevations work hardest in an inland valley. The glass package matters more here than the frame, which is covered in the next section.
  4. What's the budget across all openings? Some homeowners mix lines. They put a wood series in the main living space and a vinyl line in bedrooms and baths. Pella's range makes that practical while keeping a consistent look.

Not sure Pella is the right brand at all? Compare it with the other lines we install: Milgard for West Coast vinyl and fiberglass with a full lifetime limited warranty, Anlin for California-made vinyl, Andersen for Fibrex composite, and Marvin for premium wood and fiberglass. The window replacement hub lays out the whole field.

Glass for a hot, dry valley

Windsor sits in the Russian River valley about nine miles north of Santa Rosa. Summers there run hot and dry. Whatever Pella line you pick, the glass is what decides whether a west-facing room stays livable at 5 p.m. in August.

  • Low-E coatings reflect much of the sun's heat while still letting in daylight. Pella offers Low-E glass options across its lines, and choosing the right one for each elevation is where a good spec pays off.
  • Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC) and U-factor are the ratings California's Title 24 energy code regulates for replacement windows. The required values depend on the climate zone and the code cycle in effect. So we don't quote numbers here. We confirm the current requirements when we pull the permit and order Pella glass that meets them.

Fire-hazard parcels and tempered glass

Wildfire is a real concern in Windsor. The 2019 Kincade Fire brought evacuation orders to much of the town. On parcels in designated fire-hazard zones, California Building Code Chapter 7A can apply to windows when an opening is altered. Where it does, it generally calls for multi-pane glazing with at least one tempered pane, among other requirements.

This is not a town-wide rule. It depends on your parcel's designation and on whether the work counts as an alteration. We confirm both with the Town of Windsor before ordering, so your Pella units arrive with the correct glass and no reorder is needed.

Installation: insert or full-frame

A Pella window performs only as well as its installation. We choose between two approaches opening by opening.

  • Retrofit (insert). The new window sets into the existing frame. This is the less invasive option, and it works well where the old frame, surrounding trim, and flashing are sound.
  • New-construction (full-frame). The old window comes out to the rough opening so the flashing and water-resistive barrier around it can be renewed. We recommend this where we find water damage or rot, or where you're re-siding at the same time and want the window and cladding flashed in the correct sequence. See our Windsor siding replacement page if that's on your list too.

Permitting runs through the Town of Windsor Building Division under the California Building Standards Code. Window replacement is treated as an energy-code alteration, so a Title 24 fenestration compliance form is typically part of the submittal. We prepare it and handle the permit.

What drives the cost of a Pella project

We don't post prices, because Pella's range is wide and every house is different. The main cost drivers are:

  • which line you choose (vinyl, Impervia fiberglass, or a wood series)
  • the number, size, and style of windows
  • glass options, including any tempered glazing required on fire-hazard parcels
  • retrofit versus full-frame installation
  • trim and interior finish work
  • upper-story access

We measure and look at each opening before we quote. For a look at completed work, visit our projects gallery.

FAQ

Which Pella line makes the most sense for a Windsor tract home? For many homes built during Windsor's 1980s–2000s growth, a Pella vinyl line (250 or 350 Series) or Impervia fiberglass is the practical fit. Both offer clean frames and low upkeep at a sensible cost. The wood lines tend to earn their price in custom homes or where the interior finish really matters. We'll give you a straight recommendation after seeing the house.

Do Pella windows in Windsor need a permit? Yes. Window replacement is administered by the Town of Windsor Building Division. Because it's an energy-code alteration, a Title 24 fenestration compliance form is generally required. We take care of it.

My address may be in a fire-hazard zone. Can I still use Pella? Generally, yes. The question is the glazing, not the brand. Where Chapter 7A applies to an altered opening, it typically requires multi-pane glass with at least one tempered pane. We verify your parcel and scope with the Town and order Pella units to match.
