Pella makes wood, fiberglass, and vinyl windows under one brand. That range is the main reason it comes up so often in St. Helena, where one street can hold a Victorian-era cottage and the next road over can hold a large estate facing the vineyards. Bay Area Siding Company installs Pella windows across St. Helena and the Napa Valley. We help you choose the Pella line that fits your house, spec the glass for valley summers, manage the City of St. Helena permit, and install each opening with proper flashing and air-sealing.

Three materials, three kinds of project

Many window brands are built around one core material. Pella covers a wide span. The line names below are the ones Pella currently markets, but the lineup changes over time, so we confirm current series and options when we quote.

  • Wood: Pella Reserve and Lifestyle Series. These are the wood lines. The interior is real wood, and the exterior is clad for weather protection. This is the tier most people look at for a period home or an estate where the interior trim matters as much as the view.
  • Fiberglass: Impervia. Fiberglass is strong and dimensionally stable through temperature swings. It holds paint-like finishes well and doesn't need the upkeep that bare wood does. It suits sun-exposed elevations and owners who want durability without an all-vinyl look.
  • Vinyl: 250 and 350 Series. These are Pella's vinyl lines. They are the practical choice for secondary rooms, guest cottages, rentals, or a whole-house upgrade on a tighter budget. You still get insulated glass and a recognizable brand behind the product.

Pella's range also allows mixing within a single project. A St. Helena homeowner might put wood Reserve units on the street-facing elevation of a historic house and vinyl or fiberglass on the back. The whole job then comes from one manufacturer and one order.

Fitting the line to the house

St. Helena's housing covers a wide range, and the right Pella tier usually follows the architecture.

Older homes near downtown. St. Helena has a National Register historic district and a documented stock of Victorian-era and early-20th-century houses. On these homes, sightlines, sash proportions, and interior wood carry much of the character. Pella's wood lines are usually the better fit because they can be configured to respect the original openings. Near the historic core, we check whether your address carries design considerations beyond the building permit before we order anything.

Estates and vineyard homes. Houses set back on larger parcels are often built around big view walls. Here, frame stability, large-unit availability, and glass performance matter most. Wood Reserve units or fiberglass Impervia are the usual candidates, depending on how much wood you want to see inside and how much maintenance you're willing to take on outside.

Cottages, additions, and rentals. Pella's vinyl series gives good thermal performance at a lower cost. It fits where a premium wood interior isn't the priority.

We don't assume one line fits every opening. We walk the house room by room and recommend by elevation.

How Pella compares to the other brands we install

Pella sits in the mid-to-premium range with strong national brand recognition. Here is how it compares to the other brands we install:

  • Andersen also spans a range. Its signature is Fibrex composite rather than a separate fiberglass line.
  • Marvin is more consistently high-end. It is often chosen for custom sizes and architectural work.
  • Milgard is a West Coast manufacturer with vinyl, fiberglass, and aluminum lines. It is widely available in California.
  • Anlin is a California-made vinyl replacement window focused on energy efficiency and warranty.

If you want wood, fiberglass, and vinyl from one manufacturer, Pella makes a lot of sense. If you know you want only premium wood, or only value vinyl, another brand may fit better, and we'll say so. For a broader overview, see our Pella windows hub and the general St. Helena window replacement page.

Glass for a hot, bright valley

St. Helena summers are hot and sunny, and west-facing view walls take the most afternoon heat. Whichever Pella frame you choose, the glass package largely decides comfort. Dual-pane insulated glass with a Low-E coating reduces solar heat gain and glare while keeping the view clear.

California's Title 24 energy code sets performance limits for replacement windows. Those numbers vary by climate zone and change between code cycles. So rather than quote a fixed U-factor or SHGC, we confirm the values in effect when we pull the permit and select Pella glass options that meet them.

Designated fire-hazard parcels

Wildfire is a real concern in this part of the valley. The 2020 Glass Fire burned into the St. Helena area. Cal Fire's 2025 Local Responsibility Area maps also designated upvalley ground, including sections between St. Helena and Calistoga, that hadn't carried a hazard rating before.

On a designated parcel, California's Chapter 7A requirements can apply to windows when openings are altered. That generally means multi-paned glazing with at least one tempered pane, plus other assembly requirements. Whether this applies depends on your parcel and on whether the work counts as a repair or an alteration. We confirm that with the City of St. Helena Building Division and then order Pella units with a compliant glass configuration. If you know or suspect your property is in a designated area, tell us at the first visit, because it affects the order.

How a Pella project runs

  1. We visit the house, discuss goals by room, and field-measure every opening.
  2. You choose the Pella line, finish, hardware, and glass. We prepare the permit and the Title 24 energy compliance paperwork for the City of St. Helena Building Division.
  3. When the units arrive, we install one of two ways:
    • Retrofit (insert). The existing frame stays in place. This is quicker and less invasive where the frame is sound.
    • New-construction (full-frame). The opening goes back to the rough framing so flashing can be renewed completely. This is the right call where there's rot or a history of leaks.
  4. We finish with trim, sealing, inspection, and a walkthrough.

If the openings show damage once the old windows come out, we show you before closing up. If you're also considering new cladding, window flashing ties directly into the wall's water-resistive barrier, so it's worth coordinating with St. Helena siding replacement.

What drives the cost

We don't publish prices, because a Pella quote depends on details specific to your house:

  • Which series you choose (wood, fiberglass, or vinyl) and how many openings use each
  • Unit sizes, especially large view walls
  • Retrofit versus full-frame installation
  • Glass options, including any fire-zone tempered glazing
  • Interior finishes and hardware
  • Repair to damaged openings
  • Access on upper floors or sloped estate lots

FAQ

Is Pella a good fit for a historic St. Helena home? Often, yes. Pella's wood lines give you a real wood interior and allow configurations that respect original sash proportions. For addresses near the National Register historic district, we confirm any design considerations with the city before ordering.

Can I use different Pella lines in the same house? Yes, and it's a common way to control budget. You might use wood units where character matters most and vinyl or fiberglass on secondary elevations, all from the same manufacturer.

Do I need a permit to install Pella windows in St. Helena? Yes. Window replacement is permitted through the City of St. Helena Building Division, and Title 24 energy paperwork is typically part of the submittal. We handle both.

Are you a certified Pella dealer? We install Pella windows and will help you choose among the lines. Pella's product warranty terms come from the manufacturer, and we review the current coverage for the specific series you choose.
