Milgard is often the brand homeowners mean when they say "a solid, well-known replacement window." It is a major West Coast manufacturer with a wide range of frame materials. That range matters in Sonoma, where one street can hold a lap-sided Victorian near the Plaza, a 1960s ranch, and a newer home looking out at the western hills. Bay Area Siding Company installs Milgard windows across the Sonoma Valley. We help you pick the right series for your house, handle the City permit, and install each opening so it stays dry and sealed. We're a Larkspur-based (Marin) siding and window contractor serving the North Bay wine country.

Why Milgard is on so many shortlists

Three things bring Milgard up in most window conversations:

  • Multiple frame materials under one brand. Milgard makes vinyl, fiberglass, and aluminum windows. You can compare price and performance without switching manufacturers.
  • A well-known warranty. Milgard is known for a full lifetime limited warranty. Coverage terms differ by product and change over time, so we give you the current warranty document for the specific series we quote.
  • Easy to find in California. Milgard is widely distributed on the West Coast. That generally makes it straightforward to source and service.

Milgard isn't the answer for every house. On a high-end custom home with oversized openings or an all-wood interior, a brand like Marvin or Andersen may suit better. But for a large share of Sonoma's ranch, mid-century, and remodeled older homes, Milgard is a practical middle ground between budget vinyl and premium wood.

Matching a Milgard series to your Sonoma house

We choose the series from how the house is built, not from a catalog page. Here is how the main lines tend to fit the homes we see in town:

Tuscany (vinyl): for traditional proportions. Tuscany's more contoured, traditional profile suits older homes in the blocks around the Plaza and period houses where a flat, boxy frame would look wrong. On a house with original wood trim and divided-lite character, we look closely at sightlines and grid options so the new windows respect the openings.

Trinsic (vinyl): for cleaner, slimmer lines. Trinsic has a narrower, more contemporary frame. It suits mid-century and ranch homes east and north of downtown, and remodels where you want more glass and less frame.

StyleLine (vinyl): for budget-conscious whole-house projects. StyleLine is the value option in Milgard's vinyl lineup. It's common on rentals, tract-era homes, and projects where replacing every window at once matters more than premium styling.

Ultra (fiberglass): for heat, color, and larger openings. Fiberglass is stiff and dimensionally stable, and it handles temperature swings well. That makes it worth considering on sun-baked west and south walls. It is also a stronger option than vinyl if you want a darker exterior color or a larger picture window facing a valley view.

Aluminum: for thin sightlines. Milgard's aluminum windows keep frames slim. They sometimes fit mid-century designs where that look is part of the architecture, though aluminum trades away some thermal performance compared with vinyl or fiberglass.

If you're still comparing brands, our Milgard hub covers the lineup in more depth. The Anlin and Pella pages cover alternatives in similar price ranges.

Sonoma realities that shape the order

Summer heat and glass choice. Sonoma's long, hot, sunny summers make the glass package as important as the frame. Dual-pane insulated glass with a Low-E coating is the usual starting point for cutting heat gain and glare. California's Title 24 energy code sets the U-factor and solar heat gain targets replacement windows must meet. Those numbers vary by climate zone and code cycle, so we confirm the current values when we pull the permit instead of quoting a fixed figure. We also set glass options by elevation, since a shaded north window doesn't need the same package as a west-facing wall of glass.

Fire-hazard designations on many parcels. The 2017 Nuns Fire burned through the valley and hills around town. In 2025, Cal Fire's statewide remapping, reflected in the City of Sonoma's updated Fire Hazard Severity Zone map, expanded the High and Very High areas in and around the city. If your parcel carries one of those designations, California Building Code Chapter 7A can govern glazing on the regulated openings in your project. That generally means multi-pane units with at least one tempered pane, plus other requirements.

Whether Chapter 7A applies depends on your parcel's designation and on whether the work counts as a repair or an alteration. Tempered glass can be specified on Milgard units. We confirm the requirement with the City and check that the product we order meets it, rather than assuming one fire spec covers the whole house.

Permits through the City. Window replacement inside city limits is permitted through the City of Sonoma Building Division, which adopted the 2025 California Building Standards Code effective January 1, 2026. A Title 24 energy-compliance form is typically part of the submittal. We prepare it and handle the permit.

How we install Milgard windows

The warranty and the energy rating depend on the window being installed correctly. There are two common approaches:

  • Retrofit (insert). The new Milgard unit fits inside the existing frame. This works well when the frame, sill, and surround are sound, and it disturbs interior and exterior finishes less.
  • New-construction (full-frame). The old unit comes out down to the rough opening, so the flashing and water-resistive barrier around the opening can be renewed. We recommend this where there's rot or water staining, or when the house is being re-sided at the same time.

We decide opening by opening after inspecting the windows. Many projects end up using both methods. If the siding is also near the end of its life, it's worth coordinating the two jobs. See our Sonoma siding replacement page, or start with the broader Sonoma window replacement overview.

What drives the cost of a Milgard project

We don't publish prices because two Sonoma houses rarely scope the same. These are the main cost drivers:

  • Series and frame material. StyleLine, Tuscany, Trinsic, Ultra, and aluminum sit at different price points.
  • Size and number of openings. Large picture windows and sliders cost more.
  • Glass options. Low-E packages, tempered panes, and fire-zone glazing where required all affect price.
  • Style extras. Grids, exterior colors, and hardware finishes add cost.
  • Install method. Full-frame installs cost more than retrofits.
  • Hidden repairs. Any rot repair at sills or surrounds adds scope.
  • Access. Second-story and hillside openings need more setup.

FAQ

Is Milgard a good fit for an older home near the Sonoma Plaza? Often, yes. The Tuscany series has a more traditional profile that suits period homes. If your property sits in a historic overlay or has preservation status, tell us early. Profile, grid, and finish choices may need to be part of the conversation with the City before we order.

Vinyl or fiberglass Milgard for a hot, west-facing wall? Both can work with a good Low-E glass package. Fiberglass (Ultra) is more dimensionally stable and more flexible on color, so we often suggest it for large, sun-exposed openings or darker exterior finishes. Vinyl is usually the more economical choice.

My parcel is in a High or Very High fire-hazard zone. Can I still use Milgard? Generally, yes, as long as the glazing is specified to meet Chapter 7A where it applies, typically multi-pane with at least one tempered pane. We confirm the requirement for your parcel and scope with the City of Sonoma Building Division before ordering.
