Milgard is a West Coast window manufacturer with vinyl, fiberglass, and aluminum lines under one roof. That range is why many San Rafael homeowners start their window search with Milgard. A Terra Linda Eichler with walls of glass, a Gerstle Park cottage with a few tired double-hungs, and a newer hillside home above downtown can each find a fitting Milgard series without switching brands. Bay Area Siding Company installs Milgard windows throughout San Rafael from our base in Larkspur, a short drive down the 101.

Want to know which Milgard series fits your house? Call (415) 619-5167 or request a bid on your window project.

Why Milgard gets shortlisted in San Rafael

Three things tend to put Milgard on the list.

Material choice under one brand. Milgard makes vinyl, fiberglass, and aluminum windows. Most San Rafael homes are not uniform inside or out, so being able to compare frame materials within one product family makes planning simpler.

Warranty posture. Milgard is known for a full lifetime limited warranty on many of its products. Coverage terms differ by product and are set by Milgard, not by us. We walk you through the current warranty documents for the specific series you choose, so you know exactly what is covered before you sign.

Availability. Milgard is widely available in California. That usually keeps lead times, replacement parts, and future service more predictable than with niche imports.

Milgard is not the only good answer. Some homeowners prefer Anlin's vinyl windows, which are made in California. Others want Marvin's wood-interior options or the Fibrex composite in Andersen's lineup. We install all of those, and we will tell you honestly when another brand suits your house better.

The Milgard lineup, in plain terms

Milgard's naming can be confusing at first. Here is how we explain the main series during a San Rafael consultation. Specific features and options change over time, so we confirm current specs against Milgard's published product information when we quote.

Vinyl: Tuscany, Trinsic, and StyleLine

  • Tuscany is Milgard's more traditional-looking vinyl line, with contoured profiles. It fits homes where a softer, classic frame shape suits the architecture, such as many older neighborhoods near downtown San Rafael.
  • Trinsic has a cleaner, more contemporary profile. It often comes up for mid-century and modern homes where owners want simple lines rather than decorative detailing.
  • StyleLine is a vinyl option with a straightforward look. It works for homeowners replacing a whole house of windows on a tighter budget who still want dual-pane efficiency.

Vinyl is the value workhorse. It insulates well for the price and never needs painting. Compared with fiberglass or aluminum, its frames are generally bulkier, and it offers a narrower range of dark exterior colors.

Fiberglass: Ultra

Milgard Ultra is the fiberglass series. Fiberglass is stiff and dimensionally stable, which allows slimmer frames than vinyl in many sizes. It suits homeowners who want a sturdier, more refined frame, larger openings, or a darker exterior look. It costs more than vinyl. For many San Rafael homes that sit between budget and premium, Ultra is the middle path.

Aluminum

Milgard also makes aluminum windows. Aluminum offers the thinnest sightlines of the three materials, which matters on certain modern and mid-century designs. Frame material affects thermal performance, so we discuss the energy trade-off openly. We also confirm that any aluminum unit meets current California energy requirements for the application.

Matching Milgard series to San Rafael's housing

San Rafael has an unusually varied housing stock, so we rarely recommend one Milgard series for every house.

Terra Linda and other Eichler or mid-century homes. These homes were built with long runs of single-pane glass, and that glass defines their look. The goal is to upgrade to dual-pane, Low-E glazing without making the facade look heavy. Slimmer-profile options, typically Trinsic, Ultra fiberglass, or aluminum depending on the opening, tend to keep the lines closest to the original. We look at each wall of glass before recommending a material.

Gerstle Park, Sun Valley, and older downtown-area homes. Many of these houses have wood double-hungs or casements that have been painted shut, rotted at the sill, or racked out of square. Tuscany's more traditional profile is a common fit here. Where frames are sound, a retrofit install keeps disruption down.

Hillside homes above the city. Exposure varies a lot on the slopes. Some walls take strong afternoon sun, and others stay shaded and damp. We choose glazing by elevation instead of ordering one glass package for the whole house.

Fire-zone considerations for Milgard windows

Parts of San Rafael carry a wildfire hazard designation. Cal Fire's 2025 Fire Hazard Severity Zone update covers Local Responsibility Areas, and the City has noted that these maps largely mirror its existing Wildland-Urban Interface boundaries. Where a parcel falls within an applicable zone, California's Chapter 7A requirements apply to exterior windows. The code offers compliance paths such as multipane glazing with at least one tempered pane. Whether and how that applies depends on your parcel and the scope of the work.

This affects Milgard ordering because tempered glass has to be specified at order time. It cannot be added later. We confirm your address's status and the current requirements with the City of San Rafael before we finalize the order. That way the windows that arrive are the windows that pass inspection.

How a Milgard install goes with us

The job is simpler than most people expect. We visit, look at every opening, and talk through goals room by room, including ventilation, noise, sun, egress, and appearance. We then take precise measurements and recommend a Milgard series and glass package for each opening.

Window replacement in San Rafael typically requires a building permit from the City's Building Division, and we help coordinate it. On install day, we protect your interior and remove the old units. Retrofit (insert) installs set the new window into the existing frame when that frame is sound. New-construction (full-frame) installs go back to the rough opening when the frame is rotted or you are changing sizes. Either way, we flash and air-seal the new unit so it sheds water and stops drafts. We finish with trim and a walkthrough to check that every sash operates smoothly.

What drives the cost of a Milgard project

We do not publish prices because every house is different. These are the main factors:

  • Series and frame material. StyleLine, Tuscany, Trinsic, Ultra fiberglass, and aluminum sit at different price points.
  • Size and operating style. Large fixed panes, sliders, casements, and specialty shapes all price differently.
  • Glass package. Low-E options, tempered glass for fire-zone or safety locations, and any upgraded glazing add cost.
  • Retrofit vs. full-frame. Full-frame work involves more labor and more exterior patching at the siding or stucco.
  • Number of openings and access. Second-story and hillside access affect labor.

If your siding is also near the end of its life, doing windows and siding together lets us flash the new windows into a new water-resistive barrier. That is often cleaner than doing the jobs years apart. See San Rafael siding replacement for that side of the decision.

Frequently asked questions

Is Milgard a good fit for a Terra Linda Eichler? It often is. Milgard makes vinyl, fiberglass, and aluminum windows, so you can choose slimmer frames that respect the Eichler look while moving to dual-pane glass. The right material depends on each opening's size and your priorities for sightlines, budget, and thermal performance.

Which is better for my San Rafael home, Milgard vinyl or Ultra fiberglass? Vinyl costs less and insulates well. Ultra fiberglass costs more and offers a stiffer, often slimmer frame and more exterior color flexibility. Many homeowners use vinyl on most of the house and fiberglass where appearance or large openings matter most.

Do Milgard windows meet fire-zone requirements in San Rafael? Milgard windows can be ordered with glazing configurations used for Chapter 7A compliance, such as a tempered pane. Whether your home needs them depends on its designation and the project scope. We confirm that with the City of San Rafael before ordering.

Are you a Milgard dealer? We install Milgard windows, along with Anlin, Andersen, Marvin, and Pella. We will point you toward whichever brand and series fits your home and budget.
