When another repair stops making sense

What tear-off actually gets you

The reason we recommend removing the old siding instead of furring out and covering over it is simple: covering hides the layer that decides whether the wall stays dry. Pulling the cladding back to the sheathing and substrate is the only way to see whether there's a functioning water-resistive barrier (WRB) behind it, whether the flashing at windows, doors, and transitions was ever detailed correctly, and whether moisture has already gotten into the sheathing on those damp, shaded elevations. (A normal re-side stops at the sheathing — the framing only comes into view if the sheathing itself has to be replaced, which is a larger scope we'll flag if we find it.) Covering over also stacks weight on the wall and can trap the very moisture that's causing the trouble. Tear-off costs more at the outset and leaves you a wall that's sound from the substrate out.

Picking a material

We install a range of systems and would rather talk through the trade-offs at your house than push one product. Starting points:
