Bay Area Siding Company re-sides St. Helena homes — from the high-value estates set back in the vineyards to the older houses on the numbered avenues near downtown. We are a Marin-based siding and window contractor working throughout the Napa Valley, and a replacement is a whole-wall job for us, not a cosmetic overlay: we take the old cladding off, look at what's behind it, correct the water-management layer, and install the new siding to spec.

Planning a project? Request an estimate or call (415) 619-5167 and we'll talk through the home.

Where a full re-side makes sense here

Plenty of St. Helena homes are candidates for repair rather than replacement — one damaged elevation, a run of trim, a section that took weather. Replacement earns its cost when the problem is the wall, not a spot on it. The tells we look for:

  • Cladding that has failed across whole elevations — cupping, splitting, or boards that give when you lean on them
  • Finish that won't hold, so the house needs repainting every couple of seasons instead of every decade
  • Rot you can find with a probe at the base of walls, around windows, or where a deck ties in
  • Original wood, hardboard, or early fiber-cement products that have simply reached the end of their life
  • A remodel or an addition where you want the whole exterior to read as one house again

On an estate-scale home, doing it once and correctly usually beats staging repairs across a wall that is going to keep failing.

Matching the material to the house

St. Helena's building stock runs a wide range — Victorian-era cottages near the historic core, early-20th-century farmhouses, and large contemporary and traditional estates out in the vineyard parcels. The right cladding depends as much on the architecture as on the budget, so we walk the options with you on site rather than pushing one product:

  • James Hardie fiber cement — noncombustible, holds a factory finish for years, and its profiles sit convincingly on both period and modern homes; there's more detail on the St. Helena James Hardie page, which also covers the fire-zone side of the decision
  • Fiber cement generally — the broader category beyond a single brand
  • LP SmartSide — engineered wood, a lighter-weight look where it fits
  • Wood siding — genuine wood where a historic elevation calls for it and the exposure allows the upkeep

For homes on parcels with a wildfire designation, material choice stops being only an aesthetic question — noncombustible cladding becomes part of the conversation. That's covered in depth on the Hardie page above.

What comes off, and what we actually inspect

The reason to remove old siding instead of furring over it is simple: it's the only way to see the parts of the wall that decide whether the next thirty years go well. With the cladding down, we're not looking at "the studs" — a standard re-side exposes the sheathing or substrate and the water-resistive barrier (WRB) and flashing underneath. That's where we find and fix concealed rot, confirm there's a functioning weather barrier (many older walls here never had a proper one), and re-detail flashing at windows, doors, and transitions. Framing only comes into it if the sheathing itself is compromised and has to be opened up — a larger scope we'd flag and price separately. Covering over old siding skips all of that and adds weight and trapped-moisture risk on top.

A typical project runs consultation and a measured scope, permitting through the City of St. Helena, tear-off and substrate inspection, WRB and flashing, installation to the manufacturer's specifications, then trim, finish, and a walkthrough. Where substrate repairs turn up at tear-off, we show you before we close the wall.

Permitting and the local backdrop

Exterior re-cladding is permitted work, and the City of St. Helena Building Division (within the Community Development Department) is the authority that issues and inspects it. Because St. Helena has a National Register historic district and a well-documented stock of older buildings downtown, some projects near the historic core can carry design considerations on top of the building permit — we confirm what applies to your address before we spec.

Wildfire is a genuine part of the picture in this valley. The 2020 Glass Fire burned into the St. Helena area and destroyed landmarks in the surrounding hills, and Cal Fire's 2025 Local Responsibility Area maps newly designated parts of the upvalley — including sections between St. Helena and Calistoga — as elevated fire hazard. Whether that changes your material requirements depends on your specific parcel and scope; if your home sits in or near a designated zone, tell us early, because it shapes the cladding decision.

What moves the price

We don't post prices, because a St. Helena re-side is driven by things we can only see on site: the size and number of stories, how much concealed repair turns up once the walls are open, the material and finish you choose, access on larger or sloped lots, trim and detailing complexity on an older or architecturally specific home, and any fire-zone or historic-district requirements tied to the parcel. A walkthrough is how we get you a real number.

FAQ

Do I need a permit to re-side a home in St. Helena? Exterior siding work is permitted through the City of St. Helena Building Division. Homes near the historic district may also have design considerations. We confirm the exact requirements for your parcel and handle the permitting.

My house is close to the vineyard hills — does that affect my siding? It can. Parts of the St. Helena area carry a wildfire designation under Cal Fire's updated maps, and where a parcel is designated, noncombustible or ignition-resistant cladding enters the picture under the state fire code. We verify your parcel's status before recommending a material.

Can you keep the character of an older St. Helena home? Yes. Profiles and trim can be selected to hold a period look — that's part of why fiber cement comes up so often for character homes — and genuine wood is on the table where an elevation and its exposure justify it.

Repair, cover over, or full replacement — how do you decide? If the failure is localized we'll say so and repair it. Full replacement makes sense when the wall itself is done; we tear off rather than cover so the sheathing, WRB, and flashing can actually be inspected and corrected.
