Why mountain walls fail — and when a re-side beats another repair

Down the hill, siding usually ages from sun and time. Up here it ages from water changing state. Melting snow wicks into a hairline crack, freezes overnight, and levers the opening wider; do that a few hundred times a season and cladding that looked fine three winters ago is splitting, cupping, and pulling off its nails. The homes that struggle most are the ones we see a lot of in Pollock Pines: older cabins and 1970s–90s mountain houses clad in T1-11, hardboard, or field-painted wood, often on lots so wooded that whole elevations never fully dry out.

Signs that point past patching toward full replacement:
