Why we tear off instead of siding over the top

When we take the old siding off, we're down to the sheathing and substrate, where we can look at the water-resistive barrier (WRB) and the flashing around windows, doors, and penetrations — the parts that keep water out of the wall. On homes that have been re-caulked and repainted for decades, that layer is frequently the real issue, and it's invisible until the cladding is gone. Tearing off also lets us catch and repair any hidden rot at the base of walls or under windows before new siding covers it for the next twenty or thirty years.

To be clear about scope: a standard re-side removes the cladding and exposes the sheathing, WRB, and flashing — not the framing. Framing only comes into view if the sheathing itself has to be opened up, which is a larger job we'd flag if we found the need.
