The three Marvin families, and who each one suits

Marvin organizes its windows into three families. Choosing among them is the first real decision.

Marvin Essential: all-fiberglass and practical

Essential is Marvin's all-fiberglass line, inside and out. Fiberglass is dimensionally stable and doesn't rot, which matters in a town that takes in around 36 inches of rain a year and spends much of the winter in coastal fog. Essential suits a Sebastopol owner who wants Marvin build quality without a wood interior to finish and maintain. It fits well in newer homes, in rentals and ADUs, and on shaded walls under redwoods where surfaces stay damp.

Marvin Elevate: fiberglass outside, wood inside

Elevate pairs a fiberglass exterior with a wood interior. The weather-facing side resists moisture, and the room side gives you real wood that can be stained or painted to match existing trim. Elevate is often the sweet spot for Sebastopol's Craftsman bungalows and older farmhouses: the interior reads as a traditional wood window, and the exterior skin is better suited to wet winters than bare wood. The wood interior still needs a proper finish and sensible humidity management, like any wood surface.

Marvin Signature: architectural and custom

Signature is Marvin's top tier. It is built for design flexibility, custom configurations, and larger or unusual openings. This is the family we look at for a Victorian where sash proportions and profiles matter, for a remodel that calls for oversized units or special shapes, or for a new addition designed around glass. It carries the highest price and the longest lead time in the lineup. It earns that cost where the architecture demands it and isn't worth it where the architecture doesn't.

Why Marvin makes sense on Sebastopol's older homes

A lot of Sebastopol's housing stock is older: turn-of-the-century farmhouses, in-town Craftsmans, and Victorians, many still running original single-pane wood sash. Those homes tend to show the same winter symptoms. The glass sweats on cold mornings, sills go soft where water collects, and sash swells or sticks. Any modern dual-pane, Low-E window addresses the cold-glass and condensation problem. Marvin's specific advantage on these homes is appearance. Getting the install right in a wet climate

A premium window installed poorly will still leak. In west county, the details around the window matter as much as the unit itself. We handle Marvin installs two ways:

• Retrofit (insert) installation. The new unit sets into the existing frame. This approach is less invasive and works where the old frame is sound and square.
• New-construction (full-frame) installation. The old window comes out to the rough opening so the flashing can be fully renewed and integrated with the wall's water-resistive barrier. On older Sebastopol homes this is often the better call when we find rot or past water intrusion at the sill.

Then we set the window level and plumb, flash and air-seal it, and finish with trim, an operation check, and a walkthrough. Permits, energy forms, and fire-zone parcels

On unincorporated rural parcels outside the city, the authority is Sonoma County (Permit Sonoma). The state treats window replacement as an alteration under the Energy Code, so a typical submittal includes a Title 24 compliance form for the fenestration. We prepare it. Fire exposure depends on the parcel. Much of the low-lying town isn't in a designated fire-hazard zone. Some wooded and hillside parcels toward the coast are designated under the 2025 Cal Fire Fire Hazard Severity Zone maps that Sonoma County adopted for its unincorporated areas. Where a parcel is designated, CBC Chapter 7A can govern exterior glazing, generally calling for multi-pane units with tempered glazing among other measures. What applies depends on the parcel, the product, and whether the work counts as a repair or an alteration. What drives the cost of a Marvin project

We don't publish prices, because Marvin projects vary more than most. The main cost drivers are:

• Features: interior finish, exterior color, hardware, and divided-lite patterns
• Install method: retrofit or full-frame
• Repairs: rot repair found at the openings

Is a Marvin wood-interior window a good idea in Sebastopol's damp climate? It can be.
