What you're buying when you choose Andersen

Andersen's lineup is built around a material most homeowners haven't heard of until they start shopping: Fibrex, Andersen's composite of wood fiber and thermoplastic polymer. It's the brand's signature. It's the main reason an Andersen window feels different from a commodity vinyl unit, and it also explains why the series carry different price points.

100 Series. This series is built from Fibrex throughout. It's Andersen's way into the brand without paying for a wood interior. For a San Pablo tract home that has always had simple painted or vinyl-look window frames, it's often the most sensible Andersen fit. It gives you a composite frame and a clean, narrow profile, with no interior wood to finish.

400 Series. This is the long-running core of the Andersen line. It pairs a real wood interior with a low-maintenance clad exterior. Choose it if you want the look and warmth of wood inside, especially in a living room or bedroom where the windows are part of the character of the room.

A-Series. This is the architectural tier. It has a wood interior and a Fibrex-based exterior, with more design flexibility and a more tailored look. On San Pablo's typical housing stock, A-Series is less common, but it makes sense for a remodel that's pushing the home's design forward rather than simply replacing tired units.

A note on "Renewal by Andersen"

Homeowners sometimes see the name Renewal by Andersen and assume it's the same thing. Renewal by Andersen is Andersen's separate, direct-sold replacement business with its own product line. Is Andersen the right spend on a San Pablo house?

Sometimes it is. Sometimes a different brand serves you better. Here's how we frame the decision.

Andersen tends to make sense when:

• You want a wood interior (400 Series or A-Series) but not the upkeep of an all-wood exterior.
• You want something a step above basic vinyl in feel, profile, and brand recognition, and the 100 Series fits the budget.
• You're renovating other parts of the house and want the windows to match that level of finish.

Another brand may fit better when:

• The main goal is replacing old single-pane glass efficiently at a lower cost. San Pablo has a lot of homes still carrying original single-pane windows. In that case a strong vinyl line from Anlin or Milgard often does the job well.
• You want all-fiberglass or large custom sizes. Marvin is worth a look for that.

San Pablo details that shape an Andersen order

The brand you choose doesn't change the local rules, but the local rules do shape the order.

The permit is required, and energy compliance is part of it. The City of San Pablo's Community Development Building Division lists window replacement, including new, relocated, or replacement windows, as work that needs a building permit. Replacement windows are treated as an alteration under California's Title 24 Energy Code, so the glass package on your Andersen units has to meet the fenestration requirements in force at permit time. Those values vary by climate zone and code cycle. We confirm them when we spec the order and handle the permit and energy paperwork.

Fire-zone glazing, but only on some eastern-edge parcels. Most of San Pablo is bay plain outside any fire-hazard severity zone, so fire-code glazing rules don't apply to the typical home here. The exception is the city's eastern edge, where the 2025 State Fire Marshal maps include some very-high-hazard ground toward the Sobrante ridgelines. On a parcel with that designation, California Building Code Chapter 7A can require replaced openings to use multi-pane glazing with at least one tempered pane. We check your parcel's designation with the city during scoping and specify the Andersen glass to match. We don't assume either way.

Traffic noise near I-80. If your house sits close to the freeway corridor, ask about laminated or sound-control glass options for the series you're considering. It's a common upgrade for cutting road noise, and availability varies by product line.

Mild climate, real comfort gains. San Pablo's bay-influenced weather is gentle compared with inland valleys. The day-to-day payoff of a modern dual-pane, Low-E Andersen window is fewer drafts, steadier room temperatures, and quieter interiors, especially if you're replacing original single-pane glass.

How an Andersen install goes with us

We start with a walkthrough of your windows and openings, take field measurements, and talk through series, glass, and finish. Then we place the order, pull the permit, and schedule the install.

On install day, the key choice is retrofit vs. full-frame:

• A retrofit (insert) install sets the new Andersen unit into the existing frame. It's less invasive and works well when the old frame is sound.
• A full-frame (new-construction style) install removes the old window completely, back to the rough opening. That lets us renew the flashing and address any rot or past water intrusion before the new unit goes in.

We recommend one or the other opening by opening, based on what we find. Each unit is set level and plumb, flashed, air-sealed, and trimmed. We finish with an operation check and cleanup.
